Okonkwo in spotlight after goal-line incidentWilliamson cries foul over refereeing decisionWrexham hits back at the managerGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

Despite James McClean's goal giving Wrexham hope of a victory, the game ended in a 1-1 draw, with both teams finishing with 10 men. The pivotal moment came when Okonkwo fumbled a ball near the goal line, with MK Dons players certain they had scored. However, the referee did not award the goal, leading to protests from the home team, including a red card for veteran player Dean Lewington.

AdvertisementWHAT WILLIAMSON SAID

In the aftermath of the match, MK Dons boss, Williamson, expressed his frustration, suggesting that referees may be unconsciously favouring Wrexham due to the club's momentum, thanks to their Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

"I’ve got a lot of respect for the manager, the club, their fantastic team, but it’s really frustrating," he told reporters after the match.

"There have been legitimate goals for Mansfield and Notts County (ruled out), so I don’t know if it’s the momentum the club bring if it’s unconsciously playing on their minds. But I’m taken aback. I’m really gutted for the boys because they did exactly what we asked them to do. They deserved it. I’ve never seen anything like it. Everybody in the stadium knew it was a clear goal. The reaction of their players was to just turn around, they all thought it was a goal. Everyone did apart from the officials.

“I’m going to speak to him. If I don’t speak to the referee now, nothing will come of it. I want to hear him out and see what will happen moving forward. I think the rules are that I’m not allowed to show him footage, but as men, you need to look at it and hold your hands up. We as players and managers have to. I’d like to have an interaction with him once he has seen it.”

WREXHAM'S RESPONSE TO WILLIAMSON

Williamson's comments sparked a reaction from Wrexham, with the club's official social media account posting a video of the incident with a voice clip of Mark Goldbridge overlaid with the message "look at the white bit", in reference to the goal-line technology used in professional football.

The exchange highlights the intense controversy surrounding the disputed goal incident and the differing perspectives of the two clubs involved. While MK Dons feel aggrieved by the decision, Wrexham have responded assertively, indicating their stance on the matter.

As the debate rages on, both clubs will be eager to move forward and focus on their upcoming fixtures – but the fallout from this contentious moment is likely to be a hot talking point in the next few weeks.

Everton needn’t worry about possible Idrissa Gueye exit were Silva to land Ander Herrera

According to a recent report from Le10 Sport, Everton are interested in a January move for midfielder Ander Herrera. The 29-year-old currently plays his football at Premier League giants Manchester United and has done so since leaving Athletic Bilbao back in 2014, although with his contract up at the end of the season, his future at Old Trafford remains far from certain.

And a recent report from Le10 Sport suggests that Marco Silva’s Everton are eyeing up a move for the midfielder were they to lose Idrissa Gueye to PSG (as per L’Equipe), yet the Toffees would soon forget about the Senegal international were they to replace him with the 29-year-old this month.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, there is little doubting that 29-year-old Gueye has been the main man in the Everton midfield pretty much ever since making the move to Goodison Park from Aston Villa in 2016, with the Senegalese star since then making 94 appearances for the Merseyside outfit.

And with 86 of those coming in the Premier League, it’s clear just how reliable the midfielder has been in the Toffees first team over the years, and this term has proven to be no different with Gueye missing just three matches in the league so far under new boss Silva.

And with the 29-year-old very much one of the best central midfielders in the division in terms of being off the ball, with few better when it comes to making tackles, interceptions, and having an overall anticipation of the game, it’s not too great a surprise to see Thomas Tuchel’s PSG linked with Gueye as they seek a replacement for contract rebel Adrien Rabiot (as per L’Equipe).

And while there is little doubting that losing the 29-year-old would come as a blow to Silva and the Everton faithful, they would compensate somewhat for that departure were they to lure United’s Herrera to Goodison Park.

Like Gueye, the Spain international has earned many plaudits throughout his stint at Old Trafford for his tenacity and work-rate in the middle of the Red Devils midfield – one particular performance against Liverpool last season is one that is often referred to when speaking about the very best of the 29-year-old.

But to say that all Herrera has is off the ball capabilities would be doing him a disservice, as the Spaniard has 27 assists from his 179 appearances for the North West giants, of which three have come in the Premier League this term to help United into the race for the top four – and having only started 11 times in the league, that is a decent return.

Clearly then, not only would Herrera go some way to compensating for what Everton will lose off the ball were Gueye to leave, but he’d also add greater ability on the ball to a Toffees midfield department that is somewhat short of sufficient quality and depth – take Gueye out, and Silva would likely face something of a problem when it comes to selecting who plays alongside Andre Gomes.

Yet such decision would be made a lot easier were £25.2 million-rated Herrera (as per Transfermarkt) to swap Old Trafford for Goodison Park this month – in fact, the Toffees needn’t worry about Gueye’s possible exit were the 29-year-old to make the move to Everton before next week’s deadline.

The centre-back was taken off in the second half of his side's 4-3 win against Fulham with an apparent injury. Klopp said after the game that the injury looked a bad one and confirmed again on Tuesday that the defender's condition does not have a positive outlook.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT KLOPP SAID

Klopp told reporters: "I don’t know exactly [how long he will be out] but it doesn’t look good, that’s something we can say. The scan is not done yet so we don't know exactly but it is not great. From the first minute it was clear. I spoke to him and said: 'Ah no, that is not good'. But how long [he will be injured for], we don't know."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The loss of Matip comes as a big blow to the Reds, who are already without the likes of Alisson, Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajcetic and Andy Robertson. Alisson and Jota are closer to returning to action, Klopp said, adding: "Diogo was running yesterday (Monday) outside, on his birthday and everything is going in the right direction but no-one told me he will be back in team training. It will be some time. Obviously Alisson is closer but not for tomorrow, definitely."

The ex-Blaugrana star forms part of an exclusive club when it comes to two of the greatest players to have ever played the game. Deco has worked alongside both, at domestic and international level, so is well placed to pass judgement on who can be considered the best.

Deco, who is now sporting director at Barca, is reluctant to be dragged into that long-running debate as there are obvious cases to be argued for either side. He would prefer to see people enjoy the Argentine and Portuguese legends for what they are – iconic showmen that have thrilled audiences across the globe.

WHAT DECO SAID ABOUT MESSI & RONALDO

Deco told when asked for his input in the Messi versus Ronaldo argument: “Come on! They’re two different players. Cristiano was a pure winger in those early days – he used to get the ball and only think about dribbling past his opponents. He grew a lot as a player, becoming the competitive beast we’ve seen for so long. He has always been keen to develop in every way possible. Messi has always been a natural talent. He has adapted his game over time, but his way of moving has always been the same, so it’s hard to choose between one and the other. The ideal world would be to have both in my team – with them, you just pass them the ball and the rest is done!”

Newcastle player ratings vs Borussia Dortmund: Eddie Howe hangs Lewis Hall out to dry while Joelinton miss proves crucial in damaging Champions League defeat

The teenager made a crucial mistake in the build-up to Dortmund's first goal, with the 2-0 loss leaving the Magpies facing group-stage elimination

Newcastle are staring down the barrel of an early Champions League exit after a dismal 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday. Eddie Howe's side have picked up just four points from their opening four matches, and having lost home and away to Dortmund, they now have a mountain to climb if they are to reach the knockout stages.

Niclas Fullkrug scored the first goal of the game, finishing tidily after a cut-back from Marcel Sabitzer, with Lewis Hall completely bypassed in the build-up. Joelinton could have brought Newcastle level after the Magpies' bold opening to the second half, but he somehow managed to miss a header from five yards out.

Newcastle were made to pay for the missed chance, as Dortmund added a second on 78 minutes when Julian Brandt sprinted away on the counter and finished brilliantly into the bottom corner. Hall's nightmare, and Joelinton's miss, leave the Magpies in very real danger of dropping into the Europa League.

GOAL rates Newcastle's players from Signal Iduna Park…

Getty ImagesGoalkeeper & Defence

Nick Pope (6/10):

Beaten all ends up by both goals but kept Newcastle in it at times, making some superb stops.

Kieran Trippier (5/10):

Some superb deliveries but some stray passing, and a defensive performance that left plenty to be desired.

Jamaal Lascelles (4/10):

Guilty of a poor touch before Fullkrug's goal and just doesn't have the technical ability to play out against such an organised press.

Fabian Schar (5/10):

Could do nothing to prevent either of Dortmund's goals. Stood up well to their physicality.

Lewis Hall (2/10):

Booked early on and beaten completely in the build-up to Fullkrug's goal when he could have made a vital interception. Hooked at half-time by his manager, who should have deployed Trippier at left-back and Livramento at right-back from the start. Hall was, unfortunately, a deer in headlights, and that's the fault of his manager.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMidfield

Bruno Guimaraes (4/10):

Far too quiet. Newcastle need Bruno to make things happen, and he failed in Germany. Effectively marked out of the game.

Sean Longstaff (5/10):

Put in plenty of hard work but just couldn't find a spark to make a difference further up the pitch.

Joe Willock (4/10):

Struggled to get up to the pace of the game and was bypassed often by Dortmund's effective possession. Subbed late on.

Getty ImagesAttack

Tino Livramento (6/10):

Made one excellent delivery into the box, from which Joelinton missed a sitter, and ran all night long. Probably Newcastle's best outfield player. but given Hall's struggles, Howe's decision to start him as a winger was bizarre.

Callum Wilson (5/10):

Fed off scraps in the first-half and was replaced at half-time. A subdued display.

Joelinton (3/10):

Tucked in at times and got involved in the defensive side of the game but missed a sitter at 1-0, as he somehow sent a header wide from five yards out. Dortmund went on to double their lead; it feels a mistake he will long regret.

Anthony Gordon (5/10):

On for Wilson. Always willing to take the ball but he just couldn't make any inroads.

Miguel Almiron (5/10):

Replaced Hall at half-time. Fared about as well, as Newcastle struggled to move the ball up the pitch.

Lewis Miley (N/A):

On late on for his European debut. A nice moment for the academy graduate on a difficult night for Newcastle.

Eddie Howe (3/10):

Got this so wrong. Yes, he's dealing with injuries, but Howe effectively chose to hang Hall out to dry, and played Joelinton as a horrendously ineffective winger. His inexperience at this level was gratefully seized upon by Dortmund.

'The worst coach of the last 10 years' – Jose Mourinho's third-season struggles are starting again at Roma

The Giallorossi desperately need to beat Empoli on Sunday given tension is already building at Trigoria over the strength of the squad

Nearly four months after waiting in the car park below the Puskas Arena to verbally abuse referee Anthony Taylor and his fellow officials, Jose Mourinho is still fuming over their handling of the Europa League final. "If I say what I think, I will get banned for 10 games," the Roma coach told just last week.

Coming from Mourinho, such bitterness is as unsurprising as it is unjustified. 'The Special One' doesn't just hold grudges; he clings onto them for dear life. He's still not over Luis Garcia's 'ghost goal', for example, and even when his outrageous claims are found to be completely baseless, he never issues an apology. Just ask Anders Frisk.

It almost goes without saying, then, that there was nothing remotely untoward about Taylor's officiating in Budapest. The only "f*cking disgrace" that night was the conduct of Mourinho, his players and his coaching staff – which unquestionably led to Roma fans abusing the Englishman as he and his family were attempting to board a flight out of Budapest the following morning. So, it's honestly a little sad that he's still harping on about this perceived injustice.

Blaming referees again

But then, targeting officials has always been one of the Portuguese manager's preferred methods of distraction from his own team's failings. And he was at it again just before the international break.

Less than 10 minutes into Roma's third outing of the Serie A season, against AC Milan at Stadio Olimpico, VAR alerted the match referee to a foul on Ruben Loftus-Cheek in the area by goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

It was the correct call and yet Mourinho – who was making his first appearance on the bench of the season after being suspended for Roma's first two fixtures – was inevitably outraged. He sarcastically applauded the referee while calling the decision to award a penalty "shameful". Milan boss Stefano Pioli responded by telling his Roma counterpart to keep quiet.

And, in a way, Mourinho did. For the umpteenth time since returning to Serie A, he petulantly refused to talk to the press after the game.

AdvertisementGetty Dressing-room dust-up?

However, there were plenty of harsh words spoken in the Roma dressing room after a 2-1 loss to a team that had played the final half hour with just 10 men, following Fikayo Tomori's dismissal for a second yellow card.

What's really interesting, though, is that claimed that it wasn't just Mourinho who let rip. Apparently, certain senior players also raised their voices, allegedly calling on Mourinho to provide better tactical instructions to his struggling side. Consequently, there is a legitimate fear that Roma might be about to suffer from the kind of third-year meltdown that Mourinho has previously endured at Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Mourinho's intensity is, of course, the stuff of legend at this stage. It is part of what makes him such a successful coach and a master motivator. We've all heard normally mild-mannered players like Wesley Sneijder talking about how Mourinho got them so riled up that they were willing to die for him.

But such ferocity can take its toll. Hungarian legend Bela Guttman famously argued that "the third year is fatal" for coach, essentially that familiarity breeds contempt – or at the very least tiredness – and the concern is that Roma's players, who have willingly followed Mourinho into battle for two years now, conquering the Europa Conference League along the way, are now war-weary.

Getty Rotten results, even uglier performances

The Giallorossi have picked up just one point so far this season, but the strangely subdued performances have been even more worrying than the dismal results. According to long-time Mourinho critic Antonio Cassano, the fans are finally realising what he has been telling them for the past two years: that the new Roman Emperor has no clothes.

"People criticised me for what I said, but he is the worst coach of the last 10 years," the former Giallorossi forward told . "He has made Roma play in an unworthy, disgusting way. It's all smoke and mirrors with him. I don't care about the results he has achieved.

"We've had him for two years, the club has spent a lot, not as others say, and also this year they have taken some players. But I can't see them put three passes together against Salernitana. Against Verona, I saw shameful football, with brawls and errors. People who go to the stadium don't deserve this.

"[Leandro] Paredes, Evan Ndicka, [Houssem] Aouar are all strong players. But with Mourinho, no team plays decently. Football must entertain people but this ethos has never been seen in Mou's career. At the time things were going well, (fans were) on his bandwagon, but now that they're starting to smell something burning."

Getty Incessant injury issues

Whatever one's opinion on Mourinho's brand of anti-football, the key issue here is why it might have stopped working – and one possible explanation is fatigue.

There is, as Andrea Pugliese wrote in the , "the impression that the third Roma of Jose Mourinho is physically flat and that their brains are 'fried', in the sense that many of the key players from the first two seasons (Bryan Cristante, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Gianluca Mancini, Chris Smalling, Rui Patricio and Leonardo Spinazzola) are out of juice (Roma played 108 games during that time) and that they have arrived in this third year exhausted and, in part, empty from a motivational point of view."

It's certainly true that Roma are not blessed with the deepest pool of talent in Serie A, meaning Mourinho has had to rely heavily on the same players week in, week out since taking over in the summer of 2021. Indeed, he's often argued – with some degree of justification – that Roma's league form has suffered because of their impressive continental exploits, sniping that city rivals Lazio were only able to finish second in Serie A last season because they treated Europe like a "holiday" before getting knocked out of the Conference League in the middle of March.

Roma certainly seem to be feeling the effects of reaching back-to-back European finals while at the same time trying – and failing – to finish in Italy's top four. Striker Tammy Abraham and defender Marash Kumbulla are both sidelined with serious injuries and unlikely to play again before the turn of the year, while summer signings Renato Sanches and Aouar are both struggling with minor muscular problems at the moment.

Mourinho has even pointed out that Roma are forced to take a risk on players with poor injury records like Sanches because of their ongoing efforts to comply with UEFA's Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations. For example, the club spent less than €10m (£8.6m/$10.7m) this summer on players but even then couldn't register either Sardar Azmoun and Rasmus Kristensen for the Europa League.

Hardly surprising, then, that Mourinho was so concerned about the Aouar getting injured in a feisty pre-season friendly with Partizan that he took the Algerian off even though he had already made all of his substitutions, thus forcing Roma to finish the game with 10 men.

Sergio Ramos, meet Malik Tillman! USMNT star earns vital penalty as PSV escape with point in Champions League clash with Sevilla

PSV's hopes of making it out of the Champions League group stage may just have been saved by a last minute goal in Tuesday's 2-2 draw with Sevilla.

Tillman and Dest startRamos called for penalty after foul on TillmanPSV earn 2-2 draw

U.S. men's national team stars Sergino Dest and Malik Tillman started for the Dutch side while Ricardo Pepi came in off the bench as PSV looked to bounce back from a Champions League-opening loss to Arsenal. And it took every last bit of both effort and luck for them to bounce back as they earned a point that may just keep their Champions League campaign alive.

A goal from Sevilla's Nemanja Gudelj capped a wild 10 minutes early in the second half, giving Sevilla the lead before PSV four back. Tillman earned a penalty late on, one which was converted by Luuk de Jong but, just one minute after the Dutch side leveled the game, Sevilla left them shellshocked as Youssef En-Nesyri scored what looked like a late winner.

PSV then snatched a point at the death as Jordan Teze jammed home a goal from a 95th-minute set piece to seal a split of the points.

GettyWHAT HAPPENED?

It was a relatively tame first half, but everything heated up in the second as the two teams traded chance after chance in the first 15 minutes.

Sevilla saw a goal ruled out in the 52nd minute after Adria Pedrosa was deemed to have handled the ball on his way to scoring, leading to a member of the club's coaching staff to be sent off for arguing the referee's decision

It only continued to go crazy from there as Sevilla's En-Nesyri rattled a shot off the crossbar before Tillman missed a big chance of his own on the other end. PSV then hit the post themselves as Noa Lang saw his shot just bounce out in the 62nd minute to continue the chaos.

Sevilla, though, got the goal they needed in the 68th minute. On a ball floated in by Jesus Navas, Sergio Ramos jumped over Tillman to head the ball back across the box. Gudelj was there to smash the ball home, helping Sevilla win the game and secure a vital three points away from home.

Tillman, though, would get his revenge on Ramos, who fouled the American in the box to give Sevilla a lifeline. De Jong buried the spotkick in the 86th minute, seemingly earning the hosts a key point as they push for Champions League survival.

The key word, though, is "seemingly". Sevilla would go right back down the field after kick off and restore their advantage, with En-Nesyri scoring to make it 2-1.

It didn't stop there, though, as it was Sevilla's turn to give the game away. Teze was able to push a shot home in the game's dying moments to cap a chaotic and crazy 2-2 draw.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

PSV will feel hard done even with the late goal, having created chance after chance while failing to take each and every single one of them until De Jong's penalty.

The hosts outshot their opponents 26-9 on the day while also keeping possession for nearly 65 percent of the match. The only stat that counts, though, is goals, and, in that one, they were all level 2-2.

As a result, PSV are now on one point through their first two Champions League games, leaving them still with plenty of work to do in the final four matches.

Lens are level atop the group, with the French side stunning Arsenal in their match on Tuesday. The Gunners, of course, sit second thanks to their win over PSV in their opener while Sevilla now have two points, putting them third.

That leaves PSV fourth heading into their clash with Lens, which may just feel like a must-win considering the state of the group.

GettyUSMNT IMPACT

Dest and Tillman continue to get chances to shine with PSV as USMNT camp looms, with both potentially playing significant minutes in the upcoming friendlies.

The U.S. will face Germany and Ghana in this month's international break, with Dest expected to start once again in the right back position. Tillman, meanwhile, could feature in a central role, especially if Gio Reyna isn't fully fit in time for camp.

As for Pepi, his goals with the national team will keep him in the USMNT picture, but he'll need to at least challenge PSV starter Luuk de Jong eventually if he wants to continue to push Folarin Balogun with the national team.

Getty ImagesGOAL'S RATINGS

Malik Tillman (7/10):

Will be frustrated by the missed opportunities, and the fact that he got dunked on by Ramos, but he got his revenge by drawing the foul. It was a game that showed what he can do when given the chance, but also one that showed that he can use more refinement when it comes to those final moments in the attacking third.

Sergino Dest (7/10):

Looked solid defensively and offered his usual attacking output. Played behind left-winger Lang, who was PSV's best player, as the Dutch side did well down that side of the field.

Ricardo Pepi (N/A):

Came on late as PSV chased the goal, and they did eventually get it thanks to Teze.
