Leeds eye three-time PL rejected coach

Leeds United are evaluating several options to replace Marcelo Bielsa as pressure starts to mount at Elland Road.

What’s the word?

The Yorkshire outfit were thrashed 6-0 by Liverpool in midweek, which was yet another humiliating and heavy defeat to one of the Premier League’s top teams.

Those six goals takes the Whites’ worrying record to 38 goals conceded across their last 12 outings in all competitions, in which they were beaten 7-0 by Manchester City and 4-1 by Arsenal, meaning they are leaking 3.2 goals per game at the moment.

According to verified Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari, Bielsa’s situation at Leeds is “complicated” and the club’s hierarchy have turned their attention to a new name in Paulo Fonseca.

Premier League rejection

Whilst it remains to be seen whether any managerial move would occur immediately or at the end of the season, all of the signals are suggesting that it could be Bielsa’s final few months in charge of the Yorkshire giants.

Back in December, ever-reliable reporter Phil Hay of The Athletic claimed that he had a “hunch is that this might be his last season”.

And evidently, recent results and the prospect of being dragged into a relegation dogfight have mounted the pressure on the 66-year-old, who has been at the helm since June 2018.

What he has done for the club will always be remembered and after all, he is something of a cult hero around west Yorkshire but these past few matches have been unacceptable, so it’s easy to see why Victor Orta may be planning for a different future.

But it’s unlikely that Fonseca is the answer. He has already been rejected by three other Premier League teams in the past year.

The 48-year-old came closest to Spurs, this weekend’s opponents, before the appointment of Nuno Santo in the summer but talks stalled despite sporting director Fabio Paratici naming him as his first-choice.

Newcastle United also were also close to appointing him following their Saudi-backed takeover. After three interviews, they turned their attentions elsewhere before settling on Eddie Howe, as per local news reports.

And then Aston Villa had him on their shortlist alongside Steven Gerrard, who they opted for instead.

The Portuguese, who was once slammed for having an “abysmal” record against the big teams by Serie A expert Conor Clancy to Football FanCast, would clearly be no improvement on Bielsa as the pair have the same deficiencies.

If he wasn’t wanted by three other teams, including one below them in the standings, then that is rather damning, so Orta ought to stay clear of the former AS Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk boss.

Rangers transfer news on Stones

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly now behind in the race to sign Josh Stones this summer.

The Lowdown: Plotting move

It has previously been reported that the Teddy Bears are plotting a move to bring Stones to Ibrox, but face competition for his signature.

The striker is impressing at National League North side Guiseley, where he was scoring goals for fun earlier this term, while he also plays for England at youth level, and put in an ‘excellent‘ performance against Crystal Palace Academy last month after scoring in a 1-1 draw.

The Latest: Wigan ahead

As per Football Insider, Wigan Athletic are now leading the race to sign Stones ahead of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team, Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers.

A recruitment source has revealed that the Latics are in ‘pole position’, and are ‘favourites’ to agree a deal.

Stones ‘impressed’ during a training stint there, and the English League One club are now ‘keen’ to offer him a contract.

The Verdict: Blow

It is certainly a blow for the Teddy Bears that they now look set to miss out on Stones.

At just 18 years of age, he is clearly one for the future going by his plaudits so far and the intense interest in his services, and has already shown a lot of promise at youth level.

Stones was rewarded with a place on the bench in Guiseley’s FA Cup first-round game against League One side AFC Wimbledon back in November, who play three divisions above them, and so he is clearly destined for a good career in senior football.

Nonetheless, the Gers will now be hoping that it is not too late to persuade him to play in Scotland instead.

Rangers handed huge boost

Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has received a huge Ibrox injury boost as the Gers gear up for another clash today.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by The Courier, the manager of Rangers’ opponents on Sunday has revealed a big boost for van Bronckhorst and co.

Mark McGhee, revealed that, following his withdrawal due to injury the 3-0 Scottish Cup quarter-final defeat to Rangers on Monday, Lee Ashcroft has now been ruled out of the second meeting with Gers this week – as the key centre-back looks as if he will require surgery on a recurring hamstring problem.

Speaking about the current condition of the 28-year-old, the Dundee boss said: “He has had a bit of relapse and he’ll probably end up having surgery again. He will be out for the season. It is a shocker for us and the boy himself, the implications going forward as well. We are gutted for him.”

Van Bronckhorst will be buzzing

While it is never pleasant learning players have been ruled out for a considerable amount of time due to injury, considering just how important Ashcroft has proven to be in the Dundee defence this season, the news the Scot has been ruled out of today’s fixture is sure to have left Giovanni van Bronckhorst buzzing.

Indeed, over his 16 Premiership appearances in the current campaign, the £315k-rated man has been a rock in the heart of the Dark Blues backline, helping his side keep two clean sheets, scoring one goal and providing one assist, as well as making an average of 0.7 interceptions, one tackle, 5.8 clearances and winning a whopping 7.3 duels – at a success rate of 67% – per game.

These returns have seen the centre-back average a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 6.92, ranking him as McGhee’s joint third-best performer in the top flight of Scottish football.

As such, the news that Ashcroft will be sidelined for the visit of Rangers is sure to come as a huge boost to Van Bronckhorst and his side, especially as the Light Blues will be desperate to secure three points at the Kilmac Stadium in order to keep pace in the Premiership title race.

Burnley simply must bring this £7.2m-rated former star back to Turf Moor for Euro dream

Burnley fans in the Transfer Tavern are loving the action in the 2018 World Cup but can’t wait for their European adventure to begin on July 27.

The Clarets ended the season in seventh place, guaranteeing a place in next season’s Europa League. They will enter the qualifying rounds to fight for a place alongside Europe’s elite in the group stages. Sean Dyche’s side was drawn to face Scottish team Aberdeen in their first qualifier.

Our punters are hoping to see some new faces arrive at Turf Moor ahead of the journey up north. Scott Arfield left the club on a free transfer to Rangers, but Dyche is yet to make a signing in the summer window. Adding goals to the side will be a priority if Burnley are to compete on a European and domestic level.

Therefore, the perfect signing could be a former striker – Danny Ings. Valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt, the striker left the club for Liverpool for £7m back in 2015 after an excellent debut season in the Premier League. His time on Merseyside has been plagued with injuries which has seen him fall down the pecking order. Ings recognises he needs first-team football and is set to leave the club this summer.

A return to Burnley would be the best option for the former England international as he looks to get his career back on track. Ings was a popular player at Turf Moor, scoring 43 goals in 130 appearances for the Clarets. Returning to the familiar environment under a manager that knows him well would be a wise decision.

Liverpool are unlikely to command a large fee for Ings due to his injury problems meaning Burnley could get a great deal. Still only 25-years-old, Burnley need their former forward to fire them to European success.

Burnley fans, thoughts?

Rodgers signing who’s only played 1 game could end Ralston’s Celtic career

One of the more eyebrow-raising decisions made by Wilfried Nancy at Celtic in recent matches has been his call to start Anthony Ralston as a right-sided centre-back in the last three games.

The right-back has played on the right side of the back three for the new manager, despite being displaced by Colby Donovan under Brendan Rodgers and Martin O’Neill.

Ralston was given a 4/10 player rating by Glasgow World in the 3-1 League Cup final defeat to St Mirren and a 4/10 player rating by 67HailHail in the 2-1 loss to Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership.

Many may look to Donovan as the natural alternative to the experienced full-back, given that they are both natural right-backs, but that should not be the case.

Why Donovan should not replace Ralston

Love it or loathe it, Nancy has introduced a new system at Parkhead. The 3-4-2-1 formation has changed the dynamics in the squad and what is needed from each position.

Celtic do not play with a right-back anymore. It has, essentially, been split into two different roles: right-sided centre-back and right wing-back. This means that Donovan and Ralston are not competing for the same position anymore, because they fall into different roles now.

Whilst Ralston is more of an old-school defender who will dig in and fight for duels, rather than showing attacking flair and quality, he is more suited to the centre-back position.

Donovan, who assisted Kieran Tierney’s goal against Aberdeen on Sunday, is more suited to playing as a wing-back because of the quality that he can deliver into the box.

The academy graduate has produced three assists in all competitions, per Sofascore, including two assists in four starts in the Scottish Premiership.

Because of this formation change, Donovan may not be the player who ends Ralston’s career at Parkhead, amid his poor run of performances, as he should be competing with Hyun-jun Yang for a starting berth.

The rarely-seen star who could end Ralston's Celtic career

Nancy does, however, have a rarely-seen star who does have the potential to end Ralston’s career by emerging as a starter in the right-sided centre-back role.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

In the summer transfer window, Brendan Rodgers swooped to sign Jahmai Simpson-Pusey on loan from Manchester City and described the central defender as a “quick” and “dominant” player.

Unfortunately, the 20-year-old prospect did not play a single game for the Northern Irish head coach, as the likes of Cameron Carter-Vickers, Liam Scales, Dane Murray, and Auston Trusty were preferred ahead of him in the back four.

Martin O’Neill finally handed the youngster his debut for Celtic during his time in interim charge, but he started him as a right-back in a 4-0 win over Kilmarnock in the Premiership, despite being a natural centre-back.

In that win, the English defender showed that he has the physicality to deal with the rigours of Scottish football, as he won five of his eight duels and was not dribbled past a single time at right-back, per Sofascore.

As you can see in the table above, Simpson-Pusey was also incredibly reliable defensively for the Scottish giants in that convincing win under the Northern Irish manager, whilst excelling defensively.

His experience at right-back on his debut for Celtic could make him the ideal player to displace the underperforming Ralston in the right-sided centre-back role, because he is a natural centre-back who has experience at right-back, making him the perfect player for that hybrid role.

Ralston has been dribbled past 0.6 times per match and only completed 86% of his attempted passes in the Premiership this season, per Sofascore, which shows that he has been susceptible defensively and wasteful at times in possession at right-back and right centre-back.

Whilst Simpson-Pusey only has the one game for Celtic as evidence of his strength defensively and on the ball, he also completed 97% of his attempted passes and was not dribbled past a single time, per Sofascore, in two EFL Trophy appearances for Manchester City’s U21s in the 2024/25 campaign.

The Cityzens loanee has been an unused substitute in the last two matches, against Dundee United and Aberdeen, which shows that he is available for selection and could feature for Nancy in the coming weeks.

With this in mind, the French head coach should finally unleash the rarely-seen star, who has made one first-team appearance this season, in Ralston’s role to finally end the defender’s career at Parkhead.

Not just Johnny Kenny: Nancy must finally drop Celtic flop who won 0 duels

Wilfried Nancy must finally drop this Celtic flop who was as bad as Johnny Kenny against Aberdeen.

ByDan Emery

Ralston’s underwhelming performances, as aforementioned, could leave him as a deep back-up option if Simpson-Pusey comes in to replace him and Alistair Johnston returns from injury, which could force him to consider his future at the club, essentially ending his career at the club.

Spurs: Conte must axe Reguilon this summer

Having made a £32m move to Tottenham Hotspur from Real Madrid back in the summer of 2020, initial expectations for Sergio Reguilon amongst the Spurs fanbase would have undoubtedly been extremely high.

However, after a patchy debut season in north London – in which the 25-year-old averaged a SofaScore match rating of 6.74 over his 27 Premier League appearances – the Spain international has once again struggled to find any real level of form over his 23 league outings in the current campaign – with the defender losing his starting spot at left wing-back to Ryan Sessegnon earlier this year, prior to the 21-year-old picking up a hamstring injury.

Indeed, the £68k-per-week full-back’s general level of form in 2021/22 was summed up by his performance in the 3-1 win over West Ham United last Sunday, with Tottenham insider John Wenham stating his belief that Reguilon’s display against the Hammers was one of his worst in a Spurs shirt.

In a recent interview with Football Insider, Wenham said: “He’s so average it’s untrue. I always go back to these constant rumours about Barcelona or Real Madrid being interested in him. There’s always stuff about them paying a premium for him, it’s nonsense.

“He’s just not that good. He’s the best of the full-backs we have, but that’s not really praise at this point. Against Manchester United, he didn’t offer anything. Against West Ham was the same.

“For me, he is the worst of the bunch. He wasted so many chances against West Ham. You can absolutely see why Conte kept playing Sessegnon over him until he got injured. He wastes so many good crossing opportunities. He was very, very poor [against West Ham]. It’s probably his worst game for Tottenham.”

It was not only Wenham who felt that the £25.2m-rated man was poor on Sunday, with PA Sport journalist Jonathan Veal claiming on Twitter that he has “never seen someone so scared when they enter the penalty area” than Reguilon, while Tom Young labelled the Spaniard’s display as “pathetic.”

As such, with both Real Madrid and Barcelona reported to be interested in a move for the left-back this summer – with the former believed to possess a £43m buy-back clause for the 25-year-old – it would appear highly advisable for Conte to cash in on the defender at the end of the season, as the player who Jonathan Woodgate dubbed “horrendous” simply does not appear to be of the standard required for Tottenham.

Crystal Palace eye ‘exceptional’ Chelsea manager target to replace Glasner

Crystal Palace face an uncertain managerial future after contract negotiations with Oliver Glasner reached a critical juncture this week.

Fabrizio Romano revealed in his latest YouTube video that the manager has made a final decision regarding his future at the club after extensive discussions and negotiations spanning several months.

The well-respected transfer journalist confirmed that talks between both parties have been ongoing for a while, without reaching any breakthrough that would secure the coach’s services beyond 2026.

Romano explained that the manager has been carefully weighing up aspects like the Palace’s project direction, long-term vision and ambitions for sustained growth at the highest level

The reporter also claims that, after plenty of thinking, Glasner has elected not to sign a new deal.

Since arriving at Selhust Park, Glasner has transformed the club into genuine European contenders while delivering their first major trophy in the club’s 120-year history with a memorable FA Cup final victory over Man City in May.

His remarkable achievement in guiding the Eagles to silverware represents the pinnacle of success for a club that had previously never won a single major trophy.

The Austrian followed up that historic triumph by securing another piece of silverware when Palace defeated Liverpool on penalties in the Community Shield in August.

His performance over the past 18 months have attracted admiring glances from numerous clubs across Europe who view him as one of the continent’s most talented young managers.

That is according to TEAMtalk and journalist Graeme Bailey, who report that Palace are now in the process of identifying replacements for Glasner.

Crystal Palace eye Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior

One name that features prominently on Palace’s shortlist of potential successors is Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, who has impressed during his time in charge of the French club.

However, the 40-year-old also appears on Chelsea’s radar as BlueCo consider their own succession planning should Enzo Maresca depart Stamford Bridge at some point in the near future.

Palace are believed to be real admirers of Rosenior following his exceptional time in Ligue 1, where he guided them to Europe last season and briedly had them contending with PSG near the top of the table this term.

The former Hull City boss has been lavished with praise for his development of players as well, with European football expert Andy Brassell calling him ‘exceptional’ in this regard.

Unfortunately, BlueCo hold almost all the cards here unless Rosenior pushes to leave Strasbourg, so Chelsea will be overwhelming favourites to hire the boss if they decide to replace Maresca with him.

Celtic: Carter-Vickers attracting interest

Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers is attracting interest from a number of English sides, according to SBI Soccer’s Larry Henry Jr.

The Lowdown: Option to buy

The Hoops brought in the 24-year-old on a season-long loan from Tottenham late in the summer transfer window and have the option to make a move permanent in the summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy-2/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Should it materialise, a full-time transfer will cost Celtic an initial fee of £6m, with the American becoming a regular under Ange Postecoglou.

He was recently described as a ‘big player’ by Callum McGregor, but it appears as if the Hoops may have serious competition for his services.

The Latest: Four clubs keen on Carter-Vickers

Henry Jr, who provided numerous updates on the defender over the summer, shared a story on SBI Soccer following contact with ‘a source close to the player’.

He revealed that Leicester City and Wolves headline the newest quartet of English clubs showing an interest in the 24-year-old, along with Watford and Bournemouth.

The Verdict: Carter-Vickers’ choice

Even though Celtic have the option to make a move permanent, ultimately Carter-Vickers will be the one to decide his next move.

Hopefully he will be open to signing terms in Glasgow and won’t be tempted by a Premier League switch, especially as he has missed just one Premiership encounter since joining the Hoops.

No Celtic player has made more clearances per game or has been dribbled past on fewer occasions than the American centre-back, as per WhoScored, so a permanent deal could make sense for all involved.

Everton: Lampard must unleash Rondon

On Thursday night, Frank Lampard guided Everton to their third victory under his management since being appointed at the end of January, defeating National League side Boreham Wood 2-0 in the FA Cup fifth round at Goodison Park.

Salomon Rondon’s double was enough to earn the Toffees a place in the quarter-finals, and it was his best performance in an Everton shirt (in terms of match rating according to SofaScore) since arriving from Chinese outfit Dalian Professional on a free transfer last summer.

Not only did he complete 100% of his dribbles in a typically aggressive display, he also completed 21 out of 23 of his passes with a tremendous striking performance.

The Venezuela international has largely struggled since signing for the Toffees and has been used as nothing more than a backup option and cup striker. However, with Everton having scored just seven Premier League goals in 2022 so far, Rondon could potentially be of use to Lampard’s team, with the manager praising him as “something different”.

Since being appointed, Lampard has deployed a 4-4-2 formation twice, beating Leeds 3-0 but losing to Southampton 2-0. However, if Rondon is given a chance in that formation, he could make a huge impact, not just as a goalscorer but as a valuable team player.

The 32-year-old ranks in the top 11% among forwards across Europe’s top five leagues and continental competitions for aerial challenges won per 90 (4.78), as well as in the top 2% for passes attempted with a header per 90 (3.27). Those figures illustrate his ability to play as a target man alongside a faster forward to get onto his knockdowns.

He has also performed well when asked to press high up the pitch, ranking in the top 10% for successful pressures per 90 (5.41) and in the top 22% for pressures overall per 90 (17.62). Those figures suggest that he intelligently chooses when to press the opposition defence, giving him a higher success rate for pressures than most strikers.

There aren’t many strikers in the world who you could consider a ‘bruiser’ but also likes to run and work for his team, along with being able to hold the ball up well and make effective aerial challenges. Therefore, if Lampard continues to try the 4-4-2 formation, he should definitely give Rondon a chance in the Premier League up top.

Celtic trio shine in win over Rangers

Joe Hart, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Tom Rogic stood out in Celtic’s huge 2-1 victory away to Rangers on Sunday afternoon.

Ange Postecoglou’s side faced a massive trip to Ibrox, knowing that victory would take them six points clear of their rivals at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Celtic did exactly that, falling behind to Aaron Ramsey’s early strike but eventually turning the game on its head thanks to goals from Rogic and Carter-Vickers.

According to Sofascore, there were three Hoops heroes who stood out on the day, and we’ve taken a deeper look through their numbers to get the beat on Ange’s star men, who won a combined 14 duels and made ten clearances.

Hart – 7.3/10

Hart started between the sticks and he produced an immaculate performance, on a day when Celtic’s backs were against the wall in the second half.

The veteran goalkeeper made three saves inside the penalty area, proving to be a constant thorn in Rangers’ side and showing all of his experience, with the low save to deny Fashion Sakala late on particularly impressive.

Hart made five saves overall, in what was arguably one of his best performances in a Hoops shirt.

Carter-Vickers – 7.7/10

Carter-Vickers received the highest rating at Ibrox, following a magnificent display at the heart of the defence.

The 24-year-old made a monstrous nine clearances in a season-defining encounter, as well as winning seven out of nine aerial duels and making three interceptions.

There was also the small matter of Carter-Vickers scoring the winning goal, firing home low like a seasoned striker.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-23/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Rogic – 7.4/10

Rogic was Celtic’s other goalscorer on the day, equalising early on to silence the Ibrox crowd, and he only grew from that moment onwards.
