After Norgaard: Arsenal confident of signing a bigger talent than Zubimendi

The wait for a new centre-forward continues to drag on, but Arsenal’s summer transfer activity is now in full swing, with Brentford’s Christian Norgaard all but confirmed to be the next addition of the Mikel Arteta regime.

This shock, swift deal for the 31-year-old Dane – which will likely cost in the region of £15m, including add-ons – has come as a bolt from the blue, in truth, with the Gunners targeting a Premier League proven replacement for the departed Jorginho, alongside the reportedly departing Thomas Partey.

At a time when supporters are almost begging for new reinforcements to pep up the forward line, the arrival of the defensive midfielder is not exactly the most glamorous or exciting of moves. That said, increasing the strength in depth in the centre of the pitch is nothing to be sniffed at.

Indeed, the north London side have seemingly already bolstered their midfield ranks with the capture of Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, with the Euro 2024 winner set to move to the Emirates as a matter of when and not if.

Formerly a leading target for Liverpool, before turning down the Reds, the 26-year-old has been the centre of a drawn-out saga across the last 12 months or so, with it yet to be seen if the Spaniard will indeed live up to the billing.

The hope will be that those moves are just the start of a hectic window for Arteta and co, with even more eye-catching deals reportedly being lined up.

Latest on Arsenal's search for a new defender

An already impressive defensive unit – which shipped just 34 Premier League goals last season – could be strengthened even further over the coming months, if Arteta gets his way, with a handful of standout targets having already emerged.

Recent speculation has indicated that the Gunners could well be in the mix for Crystal Palace and England star, Marc Guehi, albeit with it yet to be seen whether the ex-Chelsea man – who has just 12 months remaining on his existing deal – would be willing to battle it out with Gabriel and William Saliba for a starting berth.

Elsewhere, meanwhile, Arteta’s love of a versatile asset could see Arsenal’s interest in a certain Jorrel Hato be ramped up in the near future, with journalist Graeme Bailey providing the latest on their pursuit of the Ajax starlet.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The transfer insider has outlined that while it is Chelsea who are “pushing hard” to sign the teenage Dutchman, it is those at the Emirates who are quietly confident of striking a deal instead for what is a long-term target:

“Arsenal see Hato as the perfect addition to the left side of their defence, but obviously it’s far from a done deal. We know that Chelsea are pushing hard to sign Hato and Liverpool still really like him. But I think Arsenal would be annoyed if they didn’t get Hato considering how much work they’ve been putting in.

“Arsenal have been chasing Hato since he was around 14 or 15 years old, so I think there is a bit of confidence there. They want to sell Zinchenko to make room for Hato and then we still expect Kiwior to go as well. There will be plenty of room in that squad for Hato who is able to play a variety of roles.”

Reportedly valued at around £40m, amid such mounting interest, the 19-year-old would represent a truly standout capture for the north Londoners this summer.

Why Hato could be a bigger coup than Zubimendi

In the case of Zubimendi, the impending £51m arrival will certainly add touch of silk and steel to Arsenal’s midfield ranks, having notably ranked in the top 19% of LaLiga midfielders in 2024/25 for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref, as well is in the top 14% for interceptions per 90. In essence, he is an effective performer both in and out of possession.

That was evident during Spain’s Nations League final defeat to Portugal, in particular, having notably opened the scoring in that 2-2 draw, while also producing a stunning surging run from deep at one stage to tee up Isco.

More than a safe and steady number six then, the Basque sensation will be a real asset over the coming years in the capital, with excitement brewing over the partnership he can strike up with Declan Rice next season.

For all that positivity, any deal for the aforementioned Hato would surely eclipse that move, with it likely to represent a truly sizeable coup if Arsenal can beat Chelsea to the signing of a player with “immense quality”, as per talent scout Jacek Kulig.

As Kulig also noted, the flexible defender – who can operate at centre-back or left-back – has already racked up over 100 appearances (111) for Ajax despite having yet to turn 20. For comparison, Zubimendi didn’t make his LaLiga debut until he had already turned 20.

Equally too, Hato has already matched Zubimendi’s tally of nine assists at senior level to date, despite making 125 fewer appearances for his current side.

Described by Kulig as “one of the most exciting left-footed centre-backs in world football”, the teenage titan notably enjoyed a particularly impressive 2024/25 campaign, having registered two goals and six assists in the Eredivisie from his defensive berth.

Again, for comparison, Zubimendi – despite operating slightly further forward than his young counterpart – chipped in with just two goals and one assist, with the La Roja star also falling behind with regard to pass completion, big chances created and key passes.

Yes, the difference in quality between the two leagues is certainly a factor – with Spain’s top-flight deemed to be the fourth-best in the world – yet it can’t be overlooked just what Hato is able to offer, even when operating in the backline.

With the potential for the Netherlands U21 international to be a fixture of Arsenal’s defence for a decade or so too, considering his age, this is certainly a deal worth pursuing.

Priorities, in the eyes of supporters, may lie elsewhere, but if the Gunners want to committ to enjoying long-term success, than a figure like Hato could be just the solution.

India vs South Africa at the T20 World Cup final: all you need to know

Who have these teams beaten on their way to Barbados, when was the last time they won a global title, and, most importantly, what’s the weather forecast for the final? This and more in ESPNcricinfo’s FAQs

Abhimanyu Bose28-Jun-20241:28

What type of conditions will Barbados offer?

So India and South Africa it is. How many times have they met in ICC finals? Or a knockout match? This will be the first time that the two teams meet in the final of a men’s ICC tournament. India and South Africa did meet in the 2014 T20 World Cup semi-final, which India won.Can they be called the two best teams in this tournament?Well, one can say that the two most in-form teams have made it to the final. Both India and South Africa are unbeaten in the tournament, and both teams topped their respective groups in the group stage and the Super Eight, although South Africa have an extra win under their belt given India’s washout against Canada.Whoever wins the final will be the first team to win a men’s T20 World Cup unbeaten.Which team has taken the tougher route?South Africa registered wins over Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Netherlands and Nepal in the group stage before beating USA and England in the Super Eight. They faced West Indies in their final Super Eight match, knowing that a defeat would knock them out, but eked out a three-wicket win in a tight contest that was shortened by rain.Related

Shamsi: 'Huge achievement, but we didn't come here to get to the final'

After a string of narrow victories, South Africa hammered Afghanistan by nine wickets in the semi-final to march into the final.India, meanwhile, began their campaign with wins over Ireland, Pakistan and USA. Their perfect record in the group stage was marred by rain, as their game against Canada in Lauderhill was washed out. India started the Super Eight stage with big wins against Afghanistan and Bangladesh and capped it off by beating Australia. In the semi-final, India put in another comprehensive performance to down England by 68 runs.In terms of opposition, it could be argued that India faced tougher teams, having to overcome Pakistan, Australia and then England in the semi-final, but South Africa were seriously tested in most games but still found a way.Okay, so why is this final a big deal for South Africa?Well, it is a historic occasion for South Africa because it is the first time they will be competing in the final of a men’s World Cup, ODI or T20. In fact, apart from winning the inaugural Champions Trophy in 1998, South Africa have not made the final of any ICC men’s tournament. They have come close on many occasions, reaching the semi-finals in five ODI World Cups (1992, 1999, 2007, 2015, 2023) and two T20 World Cups (2009 and 2014) before this year, but for the first time they have got to within one win of the title. And why is it important for India? While India won the first ever T20 World Cup, in 2007, they are without a World Cup title since 2011 and their last ICC silverware was the 2013 Champions Trophy. They have come close since, reaching the final of the T20 World Cup in 2014, and the semi-finals in 2016 and 2022, as well as the semi-finals of the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cups. They also finished runners-up in the two World Test Championship finals – in 2021 and 2023. Last year, they were unbeaten en route to the final in a home ODI World Cup, but faced heartbreak in the final. Less than 12 months later, they have a chance to heal some of those wounds and end their barren run in global events. When was the last time a World Cup was held in the West Indies? The 2010 T20 World Cup was the last one hosted by the West Indies. That year’s final, between England and Australia, was also played at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown. So what do we know about the pitch and conditions?Well, this will be the ninth match of the tournament at the venue. The first game here went to a Super Over, but there haven’t been any close contests here since. The teams batting first won three of the next four completed matches at the venue, and Scotland had raced to 90 for no loss in 10 overs against England before that game was called off. The last two matches in Bridgetown had West Indies and England bowling USA out cheaply and completing comfortable chases.South Africa haven’t played here this tournament, but India have had one game here – a 47-run win over Afghanistan.Wind, is that going to be a factor? It could be windy, with wind gusts predicted at 35 kmph from the east, going up to 45 kmph. But it probably won’t have as much of an influence as it did in Gros Islet when India took on Australia. The India-England semi-final was affected by rain. What’s the Barbados weather forecast looking like for the final?According to AccuWeather, there are some showers expected, so we may face interruptions. There is a roughly 50% chance of precipitation in the morning between 4am and 9am, but that comes down to roughly 30% between 10am (the scheduled toss time) and 1pm, when it goes up again to roughly 50%. There will be 190 minutes of extra time allotted on Saturday to try and complete the game. Both teams need to bat at least 10 overs for a winner to be declared. So there is a reserve day?Yes, the final does have a reserve day. The match will only go into Sunday if at least 10 overs each is not possible on Saturday even with extra time. The game, if already underway, will pick up from where it left off on Saturday, not start from scratch.Like match day, the scheduled start of play on the reserve day is 10.30am local time. There are some showers forecast for Sunday too, though the forecast for match hours is relatively better (about 20% chance of rain) than what’s expected overnight and later in the day. What happens if we can’t get a result even after the reserve day?If the weather prevents the match from being completed even on the reserve day, both teams shall be declared joint-winners.And what happens if it’s a tie?A Super Over will decide the result, and if that also ends in a tie, there will be another Super Over and so on until a result is achieved. If the Super Over is abandoned because of poor weather after a tied game, the two teams will be declared joint winners.

Their new Mo Salah: Liverpool favourites to sign "incredible" £84m striker

It must be said: Liverpool are perhaps enjoying a better summer transfer window than they ever did under Jurgen Klopp.

FSG’s incisiveness gives us all the material we need to surmise their Anfield ambitions over the coming years. Though afflicted by the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who left for Real Madrid on a free transfer, Jeremie Frimpong has joined from Bayer Leverkusen in a £29.5m deal to jockey with Conor Bradley for the right-back berth.

And with Milos Kerkez on the cusp of replacing Andy Robertson, 31, who is being targeted by Atletico Madrid as he enters the last year of his contract, Arne Slot’s new-look defensive flanks could be solidified for many exciting years to come.

The Premier League champions should also see Florian Wirtz follow Frimpong from Leverkusen to sign for the Reds in what could rise to a British-record £116m fee (£100m will be paid upfront and a further £16m is possible through add-ons).

The elite playmaker allegedly rejected interest from Bayern Munich and Manchester City to join Liverpool, with his medical set for this week.

Florian Wirtz

Liverpool have turned a corner, all right, now acting like the behemoth they are. However, such signings are fantastic, but Liverpool’s priority perhaps remains at number nine, with a new centre-forward needed to ease Mohamed Salah’s talismanic burden.

Why Liverpool need a new striker

Three years ago (almost to the day), Liverpool signed Darwin Nunez from Benfica in an initial £64m deal. It could have reached a club-record £85m fee, but that never happened, largely because of the Uruguayan’s stop-start performances.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez

Now, he’s going to be sold, with suitors in the Saudi Pro League and mounting interest in Serie A, Napoli and AC Milan both keen on completing a deal.

He needs to go, and Salah needs help. The Egyptian has just turned 33 and the balance of output must be spread across Slot’s frontline next year, lest he be overwhelmed by responsibility once again.

Looking at the forwards’ respective hauls across the 2024/25 season, it’s interesting that Nunez and Diogo Jota, the two recognised central strikers, languished near the bottom, better only than the rarely-played Federico Chiesa.

The expectation is that Nunez will be sold, but he will be sold as a Premier League champion, having also registered four goal involvements en route to lifting the Carabao Cup in 2023/24 too.

Salah needs a new dance partner, and there so happens to be one on FSG’s radar.

Liverpool remain in race for new striker

As per Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool remain in the race for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike alongside Chelsea, though Manchester United are ramping up their efforts for the striker, with club-to-club talks having begun last week.

This shows that Liverpool will need to accelerate their own interest, but likely, they will struggle to do so until Nunez has been offloaded. Crucially, this will need to happen soon, although Plettenberg’s earlier report on the matter claims the French forward is aware of Anfield’s plan.

However, with Frankfurt obstinately holding onto their €100m (£85m) valuation, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool or indeed anyone will pay up, with Chelsea already sounding out alternatives.

This is followed by transfer insider Graeme Bailey’s claim that the Merseyside outfit can be considered frontrunners after holding talks, and that the player’s entourage have informed interested parties that he might actually be available for a cheaper figure than Frankfurt want.

Why Liverpool should sign Ekitike

Ekitike is only 22, but he’s already proved himself capable of approaching world-class level, with analyst Ben Mattinson even declaring him as “one of the best strikers out there” in March.

This has been ratified by the data: not only did Ekitike finish the campaign with 22 goals and 12 assists across all competitions, but he also wrapped it up ranked among the top 4% of strikers across Europe’s top five leagues last year for shot-creating actions, the top 4% for progressive carries and successful take-ons, and the top 19% for ball recoveries per 90, as per FBref.

He’s come a long way already, only scoring four times and making 33 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain before being loaned out and then sold, having signed the Reims prospect for €35m (£30m) in July 2022.

Perhaps the Eagles want too much, but that’s up to sporting director Richard Hughes to engineer a more agreeable package for one of the most talented frontmen out there.

His elegance and underlying data suggest he could not only help Salah maintain his high level of performance but also become Slot’s very own version of the Premier League all-timer.

In 2017, when Liverpool purchased Salah from Roma in a deal worth £34m, few expected him to become a superstar under Jurgen Klopp, having previously failed to make it work with Chelsea, scoring twice over 19 games before being offloaded to Italy.

Now, he’s a legend, having scored 245 goals and provided 113 assists across 401 trophy-filled fixtures as a Liverpool sensation.

Salah is chiefly a deadly marksman, but he’s also something of an underrated playmaker. Of course, all know of his impressive creativity, but perhaps not so much his highest-station calibre in that regard, among conversations with some all-timers in the ball-playing department.

But it’s not just the way these two will play together (although that’s a tantalising thought), but indeed Ekitike could prove to be Liverpool’s next version of the Egyptian King, albeit in a different attacking position.

As we have discussed, Ekitike is enjoying new prolific heights but this stands atop the wide foundations of an expansive skill set, with all the facets no doubt gleaned by Liverpool’s renowned data-driven team.

The same was true for Salah, who enjoyed his time in Italy, earning praise for his goalscoring, but was far more even in that earlier iteration.

As you can see, he was consistent in his playmaking, dribbling and crispness in retaining possession, also chipping in with a lively amount of defensive work, also winning a fair amount of duels on a game-by-game basis.

And you could even draw upon the right winger’s 16 big chances missed on that final campaign in Rome, scoring 15 times. Ekitike actually mirrored that in the German top division last season, 15 goals, 16 big chances squandered.

Hugo Ekitike for Frankfurt.

His constant drive forward, electric and connective with those around him, project the style of a complete forward, something Liverpool typically like at number nine and, of course, a style which Salah has used to wreak havoc on the Premier League for so many years.

Liverpool saw something that others didn’t and welcomed Salah as he was getting going. Now they are basking in the glory of it, have been for many years.

By following this well-beaten internal path, they might just hit the jackpot once again, landing an “incredible” new attacking asset, as Ekitike has been called by teammate Rasmus Kristensen.

Salah’s is a story of merciless predation on hapless Premier League and European defences. His greatness is carved into the division and Liverpool’s most fundamental history; have a conversation about the best of the best, and he shall be named.

Ekitike’s got a long way to go, but he too has weathered the storm of a tough start to life at one of the continent’s superpowers, and having taken a so-called step down to find his feet, is now ready to move to the Premier League and become one of the best of the best.

Deal close: Birmingham now set to make £5k-p/w ace their 4th summer signing

Birmingham City are now set to sign a “fantastic” £5,000-a-week Premier League player on loan, according to a new report.

Birmingham stepping up transfer plans in preparation for Championship season

As expected, the Blues walked the League One season with relative comfort and are now heading back to the Championship, where they will be hoping to continue their fine form and be a side competing in the top half of the table at the bare minimum.

To do just that, Chris Davies will want to improve areas of his team, and already the club have confirmed three arrivals in the shape of Phil Neumann, who was announced in January, and the permanent captures of loan stars Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Alfons Sampsted.

It’s also been reported by Give Me Sport that Birmingham have submitted a contract offer to sign Kwame Poku on a free transfer from Peterborough United. Poku is wanted by several teams, and the Blues have made their intentions clear over a possible deal and hope it is enough to convince him to move to St Andrews.

As well as looking at Poku to improve their attacking options, the Blues are also interested in reuniting with Che Adams this summer. Birmingham are looking to tempt Adams into leaving Torino and moving back to England, where he has had some memorable moments during his career.

Torino'sCheAdams

But the most surprising transfer story to come out of Birmingham is the fact that Tom Wagner and the Blues have held internal talks over signing Louie Barry from rivals Aston Villa. Barry may be allowed to leave the Villans on loan once again this summer, and Birmingham could be a surprise destination after seeing what he did during his time at Stockport County.

Birmingham now set to sign Beadle on loan from Brighton

While the Blues line up several attacking targets, they are also looking at ways of improving their spine, and according to TalkSPORT reporter Alex Crook, Birmingham are closing in on the signing of James Beadle from Brighton.

Beadle, who has been with the Seagulls since January 2022, has spent the last few seasons on loan at various clubs throughout the EFL. The 20-year-old has spent the last 18 months at Sheffield Wednesday, where he’s played a key role in a damaged club remaining in the Championship.

During his time with the Owls, Beadle, who earns £5,000 a week at Brighton, really impressed manager Danny Rohl, who labelled the goalkeeper “fantastic”.

McCowan 2.0: Celtic agree deal to make "brilliant" star their 2nd signing

Celtic’s season came to an end on Saturday when they were beaten by Aberdeen on penalties in the final of the SFA Cup at Hampden Park, which put an end to their hopes of clinching the treble.

It was still a successful season for the Hoops, though, as they won the Scottish Premiership title and the League Cup, beating Rangers on penalties in the final of that competition.

All eyes will now turn to the summer transfer window, and Brendan Rodgers has already got one signing coming through the door, as Kieran Tierney will arrive on a free transfer from Arsenal at the end of June.

The Scotland international is not the only free agent who appears set to make their way to Parkhead, however, as the club are reportedly closing in on another bargain deal.

Celtic set to make second summer signing

According to The Press & Journal, Celtic have agreed a pre-contract deal with Aberdeen goalkeeper Ross Doohan to return to the club in the upcoming summer transfer window as their second signing after Tierney.

The report claims that the Scottish shot-stopper is out of contract this summer and that the Hoops have already wrapped up a transfer to bring him back to Glasgow, having come up through the academy at Paradise.

It states that Doohan, dubbed “brilliant” by teammate Graeme Shinnie, is poised to replace veteran goalkeeper Scott Bain, who could be on his way out of the club with 12 months left on his contract, and that it is a move with homegrown restrictions in Europe in mind.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Celtic need four homegrown academy graduates in their matchday squad in Europe, and the Aberdeen titan would fill one of those spots, which is why he could be a shrewd signing.

Why Ross Doohan could be Luke McCowan 2.0

Signing a back-up goalkeeper on a free transfer may not be a particularly exciting addition, in comparison to a big-money signing from abroad, like Arne Engels, but it is one that has shades of the move for Luke McCowan last summer.

Celtic signed the central midfielder from Dundee last year for a reported fee of £1m, and it turned out to be a terrific piece of business as a low-cost addition who was already proven in the Premiership.

The 27-year-old star hit the ground running, as he did not need time to adapt, and ended his first year at the club with seven goals and nine assists in 41 appearances in all competitions.

As you can see in the table above, Doohan made 15 appearances in the Premiership this season and is set to arrive at Celtic as a proven quantity at that level, making him an ideal signing as a back-up to Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo.

Like McCowan, the free agent signing will not join the Hoops as a regular starter or as a big-name signing, but he could be a dependable option when needed throughout the season as a Premiership-proven star who does not need any time to adapt to the league.

Therefore, this is a move that makes a lot of sense and one that could be a shrewd deal for Celtic, despite it not being one that is likely to excite many.

West Ham now racing to sign £84m striker who's been "blowing teams away"

West Ham United are now closely monitoring an “intelligent” £84m striker, who is also in the sights of Premier League rivals Arsenal and Aston Villa, according to a report.

Hammers set sights on new striker

Niclas Fullkrug may have won over some West Ham fans with his extremely honest reflection on the team’s performance in the 1-1 draw against Southampton last month, which left manager Graham Potter not best pleased.

However, the German has hardly set the world alight himself during his first season at the London Stadium, netting just three Premier League goals, and with the striker now 32-years-old, it could be a shrewd move to bring in a replacement this summer.

Celtic’s Daizen Maeda is one potential option, with the Hammers currently preparing a substantial offer for the versatile Japanese forward, while Strasbourg’s Emanuel Emegha and Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap also remain of interest.

Delap could be an ambitious target, given the level of interest in the Englishman, and the same applies to Botafogo striker Igor Jesus, with a report from Spain now revealing that West Ham are now racing their Premier League rivals for the Brazilian’s signature.

Botafogo'sIgorJesuscelebrates scoring their second goal

Arsenal and Aston Villa are also keen on Jesus, who the Hammers have been closely monitoring, with the Gunners thought to be seriously considering a move, which could pose a major problem for Potter’s side.

The 24-year-old is also protected by a €100m (£84m) release clause, although the Brazilian club should be willing to sanction his departure for a lower price.

As West Ham United manager Graham Potter looks to oversee a major squad rebuild this summer, should they make a move to sign a “brilliant” EFL star?

ByBen Gray May 18, 2025 "Intelligent" Jesus impressing for Botafogo

Brazilian pundit Walter Casagrande has been impressed by some of the Brazil international’s performances since returning to his home country after a spell with Dubai-based side Shabab Al-Alhi, lauding him as “very intelligent” in September last year.

The forward played an important role in Botafogo’s 2024 league title triumph, picking up five goals and three assists and receiving some very high praise for his displays.

Jesus could now be ready to make the step-up to the Premier League, and at 24-years-old he is at the right age to be a long-term success at the London Stadium, but the serious interest from Arsenal could be a major issue for West Ham.

"Unbelievable" £25m ace ready to leave his club with Nottingham Forest keen

An “unbelievable” Premier League player is now ready to leave his club this summer, amid interest from Nottingham Forest, according to a report.

Forest set to bolster attacking options

Forest will be in a good position to attract some top players this summer, should they manage to qualify for the Champions League, and Nuno appears to be particularly keen on strengthening his squad in attacking areas.

With signing a new striker on the agenda, the Tricky Trees have recently emerged as potential suitors for AFC Bournemouth’s Evanilson, having shortlisted the Brazilian, alongside Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, who could be available for £50m.

Not only does Nuno want to bring in a new striker, but the manager is also interested in signing a new winger, with Manchester City’s Jack Grealish of interest, while teammate James McAtee has been named as a target in attacking midfield.

Napoli and Roma chase £80k-p/w Nottingham Forest ace amid new contract talks

Forest have a battle on their hands to keep hold of one of their best attackers.

There is a feeling the midfielder could be available for £25m this summer, with Forest keen, and there has now been a new update on the City ace’s future, which suggests he may not remain at the Etihad Stadium for much longer.

According to a report from Football Insider, McAtee is now ready to approve a move away from Man City this summer, amid interest from Nottingham Forest, given that he has struggled to force his way into Pep Guardiola’s plans.

The 22-year-old has only featured sporadically this season, meaning he is eager to reignite his career, and a move to the City Ground could be on the cards, although there is also interest from the likes of West Ham United and Fulham.

By June, the Salford-born midfielder will have just one year remaining on his contract, with City keen to agree a contract extension to ensure they receive a fee that reflects his value.

"Unbelievable" McAtee needs regular game time

The former Sheffield United loanee caught the eye in the early stages of his career, picking up nine goals and three assists for the Blades during their promotion-winning 2022-23 campaign, but he has struggled to make a breakthrough at Man City.

At 22-years-old, the attacking midfielder needs to be receiving regular game time, so it is little wonder he is thinking about moving on for the good of his career, and there are plenty of indications he could make an impact at Forest.

Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap was left particularly impressed with the England U21 international after bagging a brace in his side’s 2-1 victory against Ukraine U21s earlier this season.

Delap believes McAtee can achieve great things in the game, but that will only be possible if he receives regular game time, and a move to Forest could be an attractive proposition, should they manage to qualify for the Champions League.

Berta set for £50m Arsenal signing decision after personally holding talks

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is set for a decision over the potential signing of a “unique” player, after the 53-year-old personally held talks with his representatives.

According to reports, since his arrival was confirmed in late March, Berta has wasted absolutely no time in laying the groundwork over Arsenal’s top summer transfer targets.

There are suggestions Berta could spend up to £300 million to reinforce Arsenal’s squad in almost all areas, including by bringing in a second-choice keeper, full-back, midfielder, left-winger, right-winger and striker (GiveMeSport).

Ahead of his debut summer window at the club, the Italian is also reliably believed to have personally reached out to the agents of key targets for discussions.

As per journalist Graeme Bailey, Berta has held talks with Martin Zubimendi’s camp, as Arsenal attempt to strike a full agreement for the Spain international after months of reported negotiations.

While Arsenal are in discussions to extend Thomas Partey’s contract, following his very impressive 2024/2025 campaign, Mikel Arteta will still be in need of further midfield reinforcement, with Jorginho set to leave on a free deal.

Alongside Zubimendi, in one of his “first acts” as sporting director, Berta also held talks with the representatives of Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, according to The Guardian’s Ed Aarons.

The highly-rated forward’s contract includes a tempting £50 million release clause, but it could still prove to be a costly operation when factoring in the Spaniard’s £170,000-per-week wages, agent fees and payment structure.

Berta set for final say over Arsenal deal for Nico Williams

According to reliable journalist Ben Jacobs, speaking to GiveMeSport, Berta is set to decide whether Arsenal sign Williams this summer – and it could prove to be one of his trickiest tasks.

“Nico Williams, the situation is this, there’s a €58million release clause, and he could finally, finally leave a club that he’s very much in love with,” said Jacobs.

“The overall cost of the deal is expensive, though, and the reason for that is because Williams has got a very high wage, €200,000 at the moment, and then there’s agent fees and taxes.

“So there is Premier League interest from Arsenal and from Chelsea as well. Arsenal are looking at a left-sided attacker. And it will be for Andrea Berta to decide whether or not there’s now value in Williams, because Arsenal have been put off by the cost in the past.”

The 22-year-old has enjoyed an excellent end to 24/25 after a dip in form, showcasing his “unique” talent, after he also racked up an incredible 19 assists in all competitions last season.

He is without doubt one of Europe’s most exciting young attackers, and he’d come in as great competition for the likes of Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard and Bukayo Saka out wide.

He's better than Delap: Man Utd in talks to sign "sensational" PL star

This summer could be make or break in terms of Ruben Amorim’s future as Manchester United manager, needing to make the right decisions in the transfer market if they are to progress next season.

The Red Devils currently sit in 13th position in the Premier League, with their only hope of securing European football next season relying on their success in the Europa League.

Their lowly league standing is huge evidence that the board need to back the 40-year-old in the window, allowing him to make the additions he wants to fit his 3-4-2-1 system.

He’s so far only had one window to implement his own changes, largely having to operate with the players signed under the guidance of former manager Erik ten Hag.

However, he appears to have wasted no time in identifying players to improve his first-team squad, targeting one player who could massively improve the situation at Old Trafford.

Man Utd already in talks to land huge PL talent

According to GIVEMESPORT, United are already in talks with Wolverhampton Wanderers over a summer deal to sign their star man, Matheus Cunha.

The Brazilian only signed a new contract back in February but has stated his desire to depart Molineux this summer, with any club wanting him needing to trigger his £62.5m release clause.

Wolverhampton Wanderers' MatheusCunhareacts

The 25-year-old has registered 13 goals and four assists in the league to date, undoubtedly playing a huge role in maintaining the club’s top-flight status this campaign.

The report claims he’s interested in making a move to Old Trafford this summer, potentially making personal terms a forgone conclusion should the Red Devils trigger his release clause.

Whilst it would be a huge sum to fork out on yet another attacker at the Theatre of Dreams, it would be a worthwhile investment, providing a better option than another player already on their radar.

Why Cunha would be a better signing than Delap for United

Over the last week or so, reports have emerged that United have made Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap their number-one choice to become their new talisman next season.

The 22-year-old is set to be a man in demand this summer, with Chelsea also in the race to land the forward who has a £30m relegation release clause within his current contract.

The former Manchester City youngster has been the Tractor Boys’ key man in 2024/25, registering 12 goals in 30 appearances – scoring 39% of Kieran McKenna’s outfit’s efforts to date.

However, despite the huge difference in fee, Cunha would undoubtedly be the better option for Amorim’s side, having the ability to feature in a centre-forward or attacking midfield role.

When comparing the pair’s respective figures from 2024/25, the Brazilian massively outperformed Delap, showcasing why the hierarchy should pay the added difference between the player’s different clauses.

The Wolves star, who’s been labelled “sensational” by current boss Vitor Pereira, has managed to register more combined goals and assists, whilst also registering more shots on target per 90 – showcasing his clinical nature in attacking areas.

He’s also completed more progressive passes per 90, whilst completing more take-ons per 90, achieving a higher pass completion rate – highlighting his all-round nature with the ball at his feet.

Whilst the club would pay more than double if they were to land Cunha, it’s evident that he would be a better option for the Red Devils based on the stats he’s produced in England’s top flight in 2024/25.

If they are to return to the summit of the Premier League in the next couple of years, it’s pivotal they learn from their mistakes in the market, needing to invest in top-quality talent rather than players who have only impressed over one season.

Forget Bayindir & Heaton: Man Utd could unleash "superb" Onana replacement

Manchester United are set to head into yet another summer window with question marks surrounding their first-choice goalkeeper, with it having been just two years since Erik ten Hag opted to replace long-serving star, David de Gea, with his former Ajax stopper, Andre Onana.

There may be those now ruing the decision to let De Gea leave on a free transfer, although it’s worth remembering that the Spaniard had become a costly figure in his own right in that final campaign, with the £375k-per-week asset notably enduring an error-strewn display away in Seville, having also failed to keep out Ilkay Gundogan’s tame volley in the FA Cup final.

The decision to part ways with the former Premier League winner arguably remains the correct call, albeit with the Red Devils seemingly getting it wrong with regard to his placement, not least in having forked out £47.2m for a player that they could have signed for nothing in 2022.

The ex-Inter star has since made more errors leading to a goal in all competitions than any other Premier League goalkeeper, with Thursday’s 2-2 draw away in Lyon marking almost the final straw with Onana at fault for both of the hosts’ goals on the night.

Manchester United's Andre Onana vs Lyon.

Frustratingly for Ruben Amorim, the decision to remove the Cameroonian from the firing line for Sunday’s trip to St James’ Park failed to have the desired effect, with one-time FA Cup hero, Altay Bayindir, enduring an afternoon to forget on Tyneside.

Altay Bayindir's game in numbers vs Newcastle

With Onana dominating the headlines in midweek – amid both his display and pre-match spat with Nemanja Matic – it appeared the appropriate time for Amorim to make a change in the sticks, ahead of the weekend clash with Newcastle United.

Signed for just £4.3m from Fenerbahce back in 2023, Bayindir has been patiently waiting for his chance at Old Trafford, with the meeting with the Magpies remarkably marking just his first Premier League start since arriving from his native Turkey.

The 27-year-old – who made just two appearances under Ten Hag – had previously caught the eye following his penalty shootout heroics against Arsenal in the FA Cup third round, with that standing out as a rare high point in an otherwise forgettable United career.

Finally afforded his opportunity in the top-flight, Bayindir – unfortunately – could not take his chance, having been particularly culpable for Newcastle’s fourth goal after producing an errant kick which led to Bruno Guimaraes’ strike.

In all, the struggling understudy made just two saves up against the rampant hosts, having also finished with a meagre pass accuracy of just 49%, as per Sofascore, after looking particularly uncomfortable with the ball at his feet.

The 68-touch ‘keeper also only successfully completed ten of his 37 long balls, with such woes emphasising just why he has largely been on the periphery across his two seasons in Manchester.

That performance will likely ensure that Onana is reinstated for Thursday’s reverse fixture with Lyon, although that is hardly the ideal situation. Could Amorim look elsewhere to find a much-needed solution?

How Man Utd can replace Andre Onana

With Onana – who has made three errors leading to a goal in the league this season – still producing a catalogue of mistakes, and with Bayindir also failing to convince, there could be a desire to throw veteran backup, Tom Heaton, into the mix this week.

The United academy graduate has, however, only played three times since returning to Old Trafford on a free transfer back in the summer of 2021, with recent reports suggesting that the 39-year-old is set to depart amid the expiry of his contract in June.

The former Burnley man could represent a short-term option for Amorim, although his lack of game time over a consistent period should certainly be a concern, having also been hampered by injury in recent months.

That absence – alongside Bayindir’s own spell on the sidelines – did see young Elyh Harrison thrown into the matchday squad for a string of games in February and March, with the 19-year-old notably making the bench for both legs of United’s Europa League last-16 tie with Real Sociedad.

It could represent a huge call to chuck the teenager in at the deep end, yet having seen the woes of the senior stoppers ahead of him, could the Englishman really do much worse?

Equally, unlike Heaton, the academy starlet has enjoyed regular action this seen both in the youth set-up and during a stint on loan at National League North outfit, Chester, in the first-half of 2024/25.

That temporary spell saw the England U20 international concede just 16 goals in 18 league games, while keeping seven clean sheets, with manager Calum McIntyre full of praise for his performances:

With United ultimately opting to cut that loan short to bring him back to Carrington, it could be time for Amorim to put his faith in another rising star, having already handed senior debuts to the likes of Harry Amass and Chido Obi in recent months.

Andre Onana

Previously described as ‘one of the most promising homegrown goalkeepers of his generation’ by the Manchester Evening News, Harrison could potentially represent the future of United’s goalkeeping ranks.

He might also be a wildcard option for the present too…
