'Perera reminds me of Klusener' – Ford

Graham Ford, the Sri Lanka coach from South Africa, has said that Thisara Perera reminded him of former South Africa allrounder Lance Klusener

Graham Ford, the Sri Lanka coach from South Africa, has said that Thisara Perera reminded him of former South Africa allrounder Lance Klusener. Perera’s outstanding performances with the ball in the ODIs against Pakistan earned him the Man-of-the-Series award.”The way he hit the ball the other day he reminded me very much of Lance,” Ford said. “He is only 23 and is going to develop and get better and more effective. The more times he handles situations the better he will be. He is a wonderful striker of the ball and he’s got the same sort of power that Lance had. He is an all-round cricketer just like Lance and contributes in all areas.”It’s very exciting for Sri Lanka cricket to have a young man coming through the ranks and he should be around for a long time and hopefully winning games with his performance in all aspects of the game.”Klusener, reputed for his big hitting in the late stages of an innings, was a left-hand bat and right-arm medium-pace bowler like Perera is. Perera has already developed a reputation for being a finisher with the bat in ODIs. He took 11 wickets at an average of 15.54 against Pakistan which included a hat-trick in the fourth ODI, making him only the fourth Sri Lanka bowler to achieve the feat after Chaminda Vaas, Lasith Malinga and Farveez Maharoof.Ford had earlier said that Perera, who has been selected for the upcoming Tests against Pakistan, could establish himself in the Sri Lanka Test side.Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lanka captain, also heaped praise on Perera. “He is still young and we knew he has a lot of potential,” Jayawardene said. “The more games he gets under his belt he’ll improve as a genuine all-rounder but he had to work really hard on his bowling in the last six month to get to where he is now. He is one of those guys who worked really hard whether it’s fielding, batting or bowling. A lot of credit to him, a great series, hopefully he’ll continue to do what he has done for us in the future.”Perera, whose performances helped Sri Lanka take the series 3-1, said he had done some bowling drills with Champaka Ramanayake, the Sri Lanka fast bowling coach. “I have been selected as a bowling all-rounder so my first priority is as a bowler,” Perera said.

Contrived chase comes to nothing

The weather was the winner as Leicestershire’s County Championship Division Two game against Essex at Grace Road ended in a tame draw

19-May-2012
ScorecardThe weather was the winner as Leicestershire’s County Championship Division Two game against Essex at Grace Road ended in a tame draw.Essex were set a victory target of 270 in 60 overs, but in gloomy conditions umpires Peter Willey and Jeremy Lloyds finally abandoned the game at 3.45pm, with Essex on 30 for 2 from 12.2 overs. The draw earned Essex 10 points and Leicestershire nine.A steady drizzle throughout the morning prevented any play before lunch, and Leicestershire resumed their second innings on 148 for 3 with 26 overs having been lost because of the stoppage. But, in an attempt to fashion a positive result, Leicestershire were fed a diet of declaration bowling, and thrashed 158 runs off 7.3 overs before calling a halt to the carnage.Ned Eckersley smashed 70 off 19 balls, hitting 13 fours and two sixes, Wayne White hit 50 off 12 and Ramnaresh Sarwan went from his overnight 61 to 98 in a matter of minutes before skying a catch to midwicket.Adam Wheater conceded 86 runs in four overs and Mark Pettini 72 in 3.1 overs to enable Leicestershire to declare on 306 for five and set Essex 270 to win in 60 overs, but the chase never materialised.Alviro Petersen was run out by a direct hit on the stumps from Josh Cobb and Billy Godleman edged behind chasing a delivery outside the off stump from Robbie Joseph. One ball later the umpires decided the light was not good enough to continue and, with no sign of any improvement, abandoned the game after an early tea had been taken.

West Indies aim for big improvement

ESPNcricinfo’s preview of the second T20 between West Indies and Australia in Barbados

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale29-Mar-2012Match factsKieron Pollard made a 20-ball half-century on Tuesday but ran out of time to add much more to his score•AFP

March 30, Kensington Oval
Start time 1400 (1800 GMT)Big PictureThe first Twenty20 on Tuesday was one of the most one-sided matches of the tour so far. Australia kept West Indies to 150 and then chased down the target with 11 balls to spare and eight wickets in hand, which by T20 standards is a trouncing. West Indies have responded by dropping Darren Bravo, who was scratchy, but what they really need from their top order is fewer dot balls and more turning over of the strike. A few more boundaries wouldn’t hurt either. If Johnson Charles gets going he can be dangerous but two of the most destructive batsmen in West Indies’ order, Kieron Pollard and Darren Sammy, often bat too low to have a serious impact. They need to work out their batting order and ensure that too much is not left for the last few overs. There was a lot to like about Australia’s performance on Tuesday, from the death bowling of Shane Watson and Brett Lee to the century stand between Watson and Michael Hussey, who complemented each other perfectly. Under George Bailey, this side is starting to find its feet. Brad Hogg would likely be in Australia’s best XI – he was rotated out of this tour to give Xavier Doherty and Nathan Lyon a chance – but otherwise expect a very similar side to this outfit when Australia play their first match of the World T20 in Sri Lanka later this year. For now, the aim is to win the series 2-0 after the drawn ODI series.Form guide(Most recent first)
West Indies LLWLL
Australia WLWLWIn the spotlightIt was hard to believe that Kieron Pollard’s fifty on Tuesday was his first in a T20 international. Part of the reason is that he has often batted down the order, and West Indies might wish to give him more time in the middle after his brutal display in St Lucia, where he raced to a 20-ball half-century, the quickest ever by a West Indian in a T20 international. The more time he has at the crease the faster the match could be dragged out of Australia’s grasp.Michael Hussey helped Australia to victory with an unbeaten 59 batting at No.3 on Tuesday, and it was his first T20 international in nearly two years. Often he had been rested before or after a big Test and one-day tour, and he remains a key to Australia’s chances in the ICC World T20 later this year. His poise and precision placement make him a valuable batsman in this format and playing at first drop allows him to have significant influence.Team newsWest Indies have dropped Darren Bravo and the allrounder Andre Russell is unavailable due to a minor hamstring strain, while Danza Hyatt has been included in the squad. Fidel Edwards should come into consideration on his home ground, where there should be some pace in the pitch.West Indies (possible) 1 Johnson Charles, 2 Dwayne Smith, 3 Nkrumah Bonner, 4 Danza Hyatt, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Darren Sammy (capt), 8 Carlton Baugh (wk), 9 Fidel Edwards, 10 Krishmar Santokie, 11 Sunil Narine.Australia have confirmed an unchanged side for the second T20.Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Michael Hussey, 4 George Bailey (capt), 5 David Hussey, 6 Matthew Wade (wk), 7 Daniel Christian, 8 Brett Lee, 9 James Pattinson, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Xavier Doherty.Pitch and conditionsThis is the first match at Kensington Oval on this tour and the pitch is expected to be an excellent batting surface with some pace in it.Stats and trivia Due to their schedule at the ICC World Twenty20 in 2010, Australia have played more Twenty20s (5) at Kensington Oval than West Indies (3) The toss can be important at this venue, with nine of the 12 T20s played there having been won by the team that batted firstQuotes”We’ll just be doing exactly what we did last game. We addressed our death bowling at the end of the one-day fixture and I think we did that really well [on Tuesday].”

Clarke inspires Warwickshire to bonus haul

Warwickshire might look back on the maximum eight bonus points gained from an otherwise dead day at Edgbaston as enormously significant

The thing with bonus points is that you never know when they might come in handy. Nottinghamshire proved it emphatically a couple of years ago when six on the last day of a rain-wrecked match against Lancashire gave them a Championship title that looked to have slipped through their grasp. So Warwickshire might look back on the maximum eight bonus points gained from an otherwise dead day at Edgbaston as enormously significant should the race for this year’s title come down to similar margins. With the extra three for a draw, they emerge from this latest soggy round of matches as Division One leaders, one point ahead of Nottinghamshire, with a game in hand. Remember, too, that they meet Nottinghamshire twice in the final three rounds. Not that you could call this a dead day, in any event, given the exhilarating way in which Warwickshire not only chased, but chased successfully, a five-point maximum with the bat, and then bowled out Sussex for 191 in 46.1 overs. Rikki Clarke made an unbeaten 110 from 105 balls and then took 3 for 19 to leave no doubt over who was Man of the Match, Jeetan Patel’s 5 for 77 notwithstanding. The scorecard may say ‘match drawn’ but, in the words of their captain, Jim Troughton, to Warwickshire it felt like a win.”I was tremendously impressed with the way the players performed after so much white ball cricket,” Troughton said. “It feels like a win. We looked to get 400, we looked to get nine wickets as well, and we bowled them out for good measure.”The performance with the bat smacked in particular of a side rippling with self-belief. At the start they were 175 for 3 from 65 overs, the point at which they were marooned last Thursday when the rain began, and yet wound up with 400 for 8 from 109.2.Mainly it was down to Clarke, who is so capable of high-speed destruction you wonder why he is not back on the England radar, at least for the one-day side. It is six years now since he last played yet is performing as well as he ever has. Realistically, you supposed Warwickshire might have a sniff of four batting points, if they pushed hard, but Clarke was of a mind to look beyond that, even, and made the improbable possible.Warwickshire were in the 89th over by the time they notched their second point and a lunchtime score of 293 for 6 from 96 overs still suggested four points was the most they could expect, a thought reinforced when Chris Woakes, another big hitter, fell for 12 soon afterwards, playing across the line to Luke Wright.Until then, Troughton’s return to form with the bat had looked as good as anything they would take from the day. The captain, who has been woefully short of runs, exceeded his aggregate from nine previous Championship innings this season when he reached 51. Though he was clearly cross with himself when he was caught at first slip, slashing at a ball from James Anyon to be out for 81, his disappointment at missing the opportunity to complete only his second Championship hundred in three seasons should not negate the boost to his confidence that these overdue runs will surely provide. But after Woakes went – and with significant help from Keith Barker, who hit 34 off 31 balls – Clarke transformed the picture, advancing from 71 to 105 in just 16 deliveries, culminating in one extraordinary over against the offspin of Chris Nash that yielded 20 on its own, including a six over the bowler’s head that took him into three figures. It left Warwickshire with only four to get from two overs to reach 400 inside 110 overs and when Patel scooped a ball from Magoffin over the slip area for four the job was done.At this point, Warwickshire would have been content enough to take eight points from the match and trail Nottinghamshire by just two but Sussex had an interest in trying for at least one point with the bat and this played into the home side’s hands.Sussex made a flying start as Woakes and Barker struggled for early accuracy and were 26 without loss after only three overs when Woakes made a fortunate breakthrough when Ed Joyce tickled one down the leg side. Then Nash was caught at slip as Patel made his first incision.Luke Wells and Murray Goodwin steered Sussex back to an even keel but there was no keeping Clarke out of the game. Introduced at 87 for 2 he struck with his second ball, aided by a fine catch by William Porterfield, to remove Goodwin and claim a first bowling point. It seemed to have a galvanising effect on Warwickshire’s mood in the field, which became bouncier still when Matt Prior then drove at Patel rather lavishly and was caught at mid-on.Ian Bell, fielding at midwicket, missed a chance when Wells was 24 but took another one with the Sussex player only two runs better off to give Clarke his second wicket, which was quickly followed by a third as Darren Maddy took a brilliant, one-handed catch diving to his left at second slip to remove Michael Yardy. With the second bowling point in the bag, Warwickshire had the bit between their teeth and Sussex, obligingly, never gave up their pursuit of a batting point. After Patel had claimed his third victim as Naved Arif nudged one to slip, Luke Wright pulled Chris Wright straight to deep point and Warwickshire celebrated as if they had won when James Anyon was leg before. A fifth success for Patel was simply a bonus.Troughton said that setting up a positive result had been discussed. “It would have been nice to have got that bit further ahead with a win and we did talk about contriving something,” he said. “But what they were looking was not really close to what we were looking at.”In any case, on the balance of things we were lucky to get on the park at all, otherwise we would have been walking away with just three points.”We know what is to come later in the season but our way has just been to think about winning the next ball, the next over, the next session. We haven’t thought about where we are in the league.”
