Mumbai welcomes back Ajit Agarkar

Ajit Agarkar, who walked out on Mumbai midway through the Ranji season, is among the probables for the domestic one-dayers

Ajit Agarkar, who had pulled out of the Mumbai squad midway through the Ranji Trophy season after he was dropped for the group match against Orissa, has been included among the 25 probables for the West Zone one-dayers of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.Agarkar met with Milind Rege, Mumbai’s chairman of selectors, Ratnakar Shetty, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) vice-president, and Nitin Dalal, the MCA secretary on Monday afternoon to sort out the issues after Rege had messaged Agarkar last week, requesting for a meeting. It is understood that at the meeting, which lasted 45 minutes, both Agarkar and the MCA management regretted what had happened.”I am always happy to play for Mumbai and am looking forward to the return,” Agarkar told ESPNcricinfo. “I obviously can’t change what has happened. I now look forward to the one-dayers if selected.”On November 29, Mumbai were to start their Elite group match against Orissa in Cuttack. But the previous evening Agarkar was informed by the pair of Sulakshan Kulkarni and Wasim Jaffer (Mumbai coach and captain respectively) that he was not part of the playing XI. It was also Zaheer Khan’s first game of the Ranji season, as part of his recovery process from the injury he picked up during last year’s England tour.Annoyed at being dropped, Agarkar flew back to Mumbai on the morning of the match. The issue snowballed into a controversy after Zaheer supported Agarkar’s decision and blamed the pair of Rege and Kulkarni for “pulling down” Mumbai cricket. Thereafter Agarkar, who had played only one match in the season (against Karnataka and went wicketless) made himself unavailable for selection despite calls from Dalal and Shetty, who asked him to reconsider. In his absence, Mumbai’s fast bowling department lacked a leader. After Mumbai’s lukewarm performance during the Ranji Trophy campaign where they bowed out of the semi-finals against Tamil Nadu, the pressure increased on the selectors and the team management. Consequently, Wasim Jaffer, Mumbai’s captain for the last four years, stepped down, unhappy at the remarks expressed by Kulkarni to the media.Probably as a damage-control measure, Rege tried to convince Agarkar to return, to avoid any further rumblings in the dressing room.At Monday’s meeting, Agarkar once again made it clear to the MCA officials that if he was not picked in the playing XI, he would rather sit at home than “carry water.” “It is not that I have not been twelfth man in my life but there is a merit to it,” Agarkar said.Agarkar asked for a day to think over it before arriving at a decision. But later that evening, he called up Dalal to confirm his availability. Agarkar, who plays for the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, said he also needed some match practice before the tournament begins in April, and the one-day tournament would be a good platform to get back to fitness.Probables: Ajinkya Rahane, Wasim Jaffer, Ajit Agarkar, Ramesh Powar, Aavishkar Salvi, Dhaval Kulkarni, Abhishek Nayar, Anup Revandkar, Praful Waghela, Siddharth Chitnis, Iqbal Abdullah, Ankit Chavan, Suryakumar Yadav, Parag Khanapurkar, Aditya Tare, Sushant Marathe, Kumar Subramanian, Balwinder Singh Sandhu Jnr, Kshemal Waingankar, Akhil Herwadkar, Kaustubh Pawar, Usman Malvi, Santosh Shinde, Murtuza Hussain, Shoaib Shaikh

West Indies aim for big improvement

ESPNcricinfo’s preview of the second T20 between West Indies and Australia in Barbados

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale29-Mar-2012Match factsKieron Pollard made a 20-ball half-century on Tuesday but ran out of time to add much more to his score•AFP

March 30, Kensington Oval
Start time 1400 (1800 GMT)Big PictureThe first Twenty20 on Tuesday was one of the most one-sided matches of the tour so far. Australia kept West Indies to 150 and then chased down the target with 11 balls to spare and eight wickets in hand, which by T20 standards is a trouncing. West Indies have responded by dropping Darren Bravo, who was scratchy, but what they really need from their top order is fewer dot balls and more turning over of the strike. A few more boundaries wouldn’t hurt either. If Johnson Charles gets going he can be dangerous but two of the most destructive batsmen in West Indies’ order, Kieron Pollard and Darren Sammy, often bat too low to have a serious impact. They need to work out their batting order and ensure that too much is not left for the last few overs. There was a lot to like about Australia’s performance on Tuesday, from the death bowling of Shane Watson and Brett Lee to the century stand between Watson and Michael Hussey, who complemented each other perfectly. Under George Bailey, this side is starting to find its feet. Brad Hogg would likely be in Australia’s best XI – he was rotated out of this tour to give Xavier Doherty and Nathan Lyon a chance – but otherwise expect a very similar side to this outfit when Australia play their first match of the World T20 in Sri Lanka later this year. For now, the aim is to win the series 2-0 after the drawn ODI series.Form guide(Most recent first)
West Indies LLWLL
Australia WLWLWIn the spotlightIt was hard to believe that Kieron Pollard’s fifty on Tuesday was his first in a T20 international. Part of the reason is that he has often batted down the order, and West Indies might wish to give him more time in the middle after his brutal display in St Lucia, where he raced to a 20-ball half-century, the quickest ever by a West Indian in a T20 international. The more time he has at the crease the faster the match could be dragged out of Australia’s grasp.Michael Hussey helped Australia to victory with an unbeaten 59 batting at No.3 on Tuesday, and it was his first T20 international in nearly two years. Often he had been rested before or after a big Test and one-day tour, and he remains a key to Australia’s chances in the ICC World T20 later this year. His poise and precision placement make him a valuable batsman in this format and playing at first drop allows him to have significant influence.Team newsWest Indies have dropped Darren Bravo and the allrounder Andre Russell is unavailable due to a minor hamstring strain, while Danza Hyatt has been included in the squad. Fidel Edwards should come into consideration on his home ground, where there should be some pace in the pitch.West Indies (possible) 1 Johnson Charles, 2 Dwayne Smith, 3 Nkrumah Bonner, 4 Danza Hyatt, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Darren Sammy (capt), 8 Carlton Baugh (wk), 9 Fidel Edwards, 10 Krishmar Santokie, 11 Sunil Narine.Australia have confirmed an unchanged side for the second T20.Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Michael Hussey, 4 George Bailey (capt), 5 David Hussey, 6 Matthew Wade (wk), 7 Daniel Christian, 8 Brett Lee, 9 James Pattinson, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Xavier Doherty.Pitch and conditionsThis is the first match at Kensington Oval on this tour and the pitch is expected to be an excellent batting surface with some pace in it.Stats and trivia Due to their schedule at the ICC World Twenty20 in 2010, Australia have played more Twenty20s (5) at Kensington Oval than West Indies (3) The toss can be important at this venue, with nine of the 12 T20s played there having been won by the team that batted firstQuotes”We’ll just be doing exactly what we did last game. We addressed our death bowling at the end of the one-day fixture and I think we did that really well [on Tuesday].”

Taylor stars with bat and gloves

England took the lead in the women’s Ashes series with an expertly paced run chase at Hove. Needing 204 in 36 overs after the match was reduced due to a wet outfield they eased home with 16 balls to spare

England took the lead in the women’s Ashes series, and secured the one-day prize, with an expertly paced run chase at Hove. Needing 204 in 36 overs, in a match reduced due to a wet outfield, they eased home with 16 balls to spare after a second-wicket stand of 126 in 18 overs between Heather Knight and Sarah Taylor broke the back of the target.Taylor, who struck 64 off 59 balls, enjoyed a fabulous all-round match having earlier pulled off a stunning piece of glovework to remove Jodie Fields who played a reverse sweep which was caught by Taylor as she anticipated the shot and dived full-length to her right.Taylor said: “I couldn’t believe that ball stuck in my glove, I saw it coming and just dived to stop it and get something on it and it just stuck, I think that’s got to be the best catch of my career so far.”Charlotte Edwards fell early in the chase, driving to short cover, but Knight and Taylor were soon up with the required rate. The pair used swift footwork against the spinners and weren’t afraid to hit the ball over the top. Their stand was a record second-wicket effort for England against Australia. The pursuit wobbled briefly as three wickets fell for 29 but Lydia Greenway and Natalie Sciver added 33 to take England to the brink of victory and two more points.”We spoke about being positive from ball one and with targets like that you’ve got to put the ball away if it’s in your area,” Taylor said. “It was brilliant to bat out there with Heather and to contribute to the win.”Australia’s innings had initially been anchored by Meg Lanning’s 69-ball 64 but at 126 for 4 was threatening to lose its way. Ellyse Perry and Alex Blackwell added 77 in 10 overs for the fifth wicket to lift them over 200, but it still did not prove enough. The Ashes series, played across all three formats, now moves into the final phase with three Twenty20s.

Kerrigan helps Lancs climb off the ropes

Murray Goodwin fell six runs short of his double-century in becoming one of seven wicket for Lancashire spinner Simon Kerrigan

Even in his 41st year Murray Goodwin is a batsman whose thirst for runs remains gloriously unslaked. Angular, compact and resolutely well-organised, the Zimbabwean gives the impression that scoring a century merely lays the foundation of his innings.Goodwin’s demeanour also suggests that he is, in the best sense of the word, a most combative cricketer. It is little wonder that one strays into the semantic field of boxing to describe the technique of this chunky, square-jawed batsman, who mixes a very tight defence with the cuts and punches that earn him his runs.Yet on the second afternoon of this game – and having added 56 runs to his overnight 138 – Goodwin was eventually removed by Simon Kerrigan, a young spinner whose desire for success is no less keen than the man who is more than 16 years his senior. When just six runs short of passing 200 for the tenth time in his career, Glamorgan’s close-season recruit from Sussex carelessly slapped a short ball from the slow left- armer straight to square leg where Andrea Agathangelou pocketed a low two-handed catch with his customary aplomb. That Goodwin was plainly annoyed with himself as he stalked off the field reflected well on his professionalism; all the same, it was unfortunate that his disgruntlement prevented him fully acknowledging the generous applause that came from all the open stands at Old Trafford. In truth, Goodwin’s dismissal – he was eighth out after batting for 458 minutes and facing 354 deliveries – concluded a period in which Kerrigan effected a partial restoration of Lancashire’s fortunes in this game.At 408 for 4 and having lost only Jim Allenby on the second day, lbw to a Glen Chapple shooter for 92, Glamorgan had seemed set to build a total which would have left Lancashire with little but a draw to play for. Instead, Kerrigan had Mark Wallace caught at slip, probably off inside edge and pad, for 37 and then took three wickets for seven runs in 18 balls as the Welsh team declined to 474 all out, a total which is still very formidable without being quite the riches they hoped for.Kerrigan’s performance offered further proof that he possesses the tough character which is the sine qua non of any successful spinner. Having been at less than his impressive best on the first day of this game, Kerrigan took 5 for 48 in 13.1 overs on Tuesday and finished with 7 for 162 from 49.1 overs. The 24-year-old has now taken 39 wickets in nine County Championship games and he is now comfortably the most successful spinner in the country. If Monty Panesar is still the favourite to make the winter tour to Australia as Graeme Swann’s understudy, Kerrigan cannot be too far behind him and it would be only natural for the Lancastrian to cast an eye over the massive stands being erected for the Ashes Test and wonder when his chance might come. For the moment though – which is what the professionals are so often encouraged to experience and enjoy – Kerrigan’s efforts have given Lancashire a sniff of a chance of overhauling Glamorgan’s total and maybe pressing for an unlikely victory in this game. That impression was confirmed when Karl Brown and Luis Reece, Lancashire’s fifth opening partnership in seven games, added an untroubled 93 runs in 40 overs in the evening session.

Chelsea must seal Willian exit that would usher in a new era at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are a team in transition, and there’s a real need for Maurizio Sarri to conduct a restructuring job at Stamford Bridge. The core at the club is fantastic, with the likes of Kepa, Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger, N’Golo Kante and Eden Hazard all impressing, but there are also a ton of players that have underperformed as of late.

One such example is Willian. Significantly, he’s now been linked, via Sky Sports, with a move to PSG, and if the French team make a move, it’s something that Chelsea should really consider.

Losing a player of his importance under Maurizio Sarri would be a risk for Chelsea, but if an opportunity presents itself for enough money, this isn’t a sale that Chelsea can afford to let pass them by.

After all, it’s important to recognise Willian’s recent form. A good game against Sheffield Wednesday isn’t enough to rectify two years of poor form, and the Brazilian has continually failed to deliver under Maurizio Sarri this season in particular.

Furthermore, at 30-years-old, he’s not a player that has much hope of improving. In fact, he’s closer to retirement at this stage than he is to is peak, and so as a result, perhaps it’s time for Chelsea to move on and usher in a new era in their attack.

Of course, his departure would also open up the door for Callum Hudson-Odoi to get a regular chance in the first team at Stamford Bridge. He’s been a regular in Europe and in cup competitions this season, but the Blues need to play him regularly to have a chance of keeping him going forward – and the sale of Willian would serve to give him a real chance in the first team. This would also help ease the transition that Christian Pulisic will have in the summer.

If this opportunity presents itself, Chelsea must take it. It’s time to move on and prepare for the future – even if the short-term may be more difficult as a result.
