Neesham, McCullum deliver close win for Otago

Lower-order batsmen Jimmy Neesham and Neil Wagner scored 74 runs in 7.4 overs together to steer Otago to a close three-wicket victory against Auckland

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Dec-2012
ScorecardLower-order batsmen Jimmy Neesham and Neil Wagner scored 74 runs in 7.4 overs to steer Otago to a three-wicket victory against Auckland. Despite Nathan McCullum’s 77, Otago were reduced to 169 for 7 in their chase of 218, after Chris Martin and Mitchell Mclenaghan took three wickets each. However, Neesham struck some heavy blows and took his side to the target. A 57-run first-innings lead helped Otago get an achievable target to chase, as Colin Munro’s century had helped Auckland to a strong second-innings total of 274.Auckland, batting first, succumbed to seamer Ian Butler on the first day, and they couldn’t overcome the disadvantage caused due to this throughout the rest of the match. Munro scored 59, but besides him and Lou Vincent, no one provided resistance to Butler as Auckland were bowled out for 196 in the 52nd over. Otago finished the day at 86 for 0, firmly in control of the contest. But this strong foundation of a 103-run opening stand gave way to a lower-order collapse as 25-year old seamer Dean Bartlett took five wickets to bowl them out for 253. At 240 for 4, they lost their last six wickets for 13 runs. Opener Aaron Redmond was the top-scorer with 98, and his opening partner Hamish Rutherford scored 70, but of the following batsmen there were six who scored in single digits, and only one of them scored more than 17 – middle-order batsman Sam Wells. Well’s was the fifth wicket to fall, and it led to the collapse.Auckland’s comeback was undone by Butler again. He dismissed the openers, to contribute to their disarray at 96 for 5. But Munro and Craig Cachopa steadied the innings by sharing a 96-run stand. After Butler removed Cachopa and Kyle Mills to leave them at 198 for 7, Munro rallied with No. 9 Bruce Martin to push their side to 274. Munro’s 118 off 124 deliveries featured six hits for sixes.Martin and McLenaghan consolidated on the platform provided by his knock, and Otago’s top order was rocked early. Redmond and McCullum, and later McCullum and Wells kept them in the hunt for the target. But this time, Wells’ dismissal in the 53rd over did not lead to another collapse, as Otago fought it out to win by three wickets.

USA pick seven uncapped players for Auty Cup

The squad includes seven players who have yet to represent USA at the senior level and just three who were a part of USA’s most recent tournament squad at ICC WCL Division Four in Malaysia

The USA Cricket Association has announced a 14-man squad for a four-match series against Canada at the Central Broward Regional Park in Florida from November 14-17. The squad includes seven players who have yet to represent USA at the senior level and just three who were a part of USA’s most recent tournament squad at ICC WCL Division Four in Malaysia: Steven Taylor, Ryan Corns and Andy Mohammed. The tour includes one 50-over match, two T20s and the two-day Auty Cup match which was resurrected last year in Toronto after a 16-year hiatus. Most first choice players for USA are unavailable to participate in the matches against Canada after exhausting their vacation time from work to participate in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier and WCL Division Four.USA captain Steve Massiah, vice-captain Sushil Nadkarni, Usman Shuja, Aditya Mishra, Aditya Thyagarajan, Elmore Hutchinson and Abhimanyu Rajp are all participating in the 2012 USACA National Championship, which was announced to take place for the weekend of November 10-11 in Florida, but will not be playing for USA in the mid-week matches against Canada. The absence of first-choice players will present an opportunity for fringe players to press their claims for selection to USA’s squads for the ICC Americas Division One T20 and ICC WCL Division Three, which are both scheduled to take place next spring. No captain has been named for USA in the Auty Cup squad. Two fringe players looking to cement a spot for next year’s tours are Japen Patel and Adil Bhatti. Both were part of USA’s squad at the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in March but were dropped for September’s tour of Malaysia. Medium-pacer Adrian Gordon last represented USA in 2011 but has been given a call-up after spending the past summer playing club cricket in the UK for Skegness Cricket Club in Lincolnshire. Gordon is also set to play club cricket in Western Australia during the northern winter. The biggest surprise among the recalls is Barrington Bartley. Long considered one of the best fielders in the country, Bartley had been continuously omitted since his last appearance for USA at the WICB Cup in November 2008, but at 32 he will be the oldest player in the squad and one of the more experienced ones at international level having represented USA at the 2005 ICC Trophy in Ireland. One of the most notable first-time selections is Timil Patel, 28, who made his first-class Ranji Trophy debut for Gujarat in 2002. Timil played 38 first-class matches for the state and last represented them in December 2009 before moving to Los Angeles. He is regarded by many domestic players as the best legspinner in America and took 47 wickets this season in Division One of the highly-competitive Southern California Cricket Association competition.Three of USA’s uncapped players at the senior level previously represented USA at the junior level in the 2010 ICC U-19 World Cup in New Zealand. Wicketkeeper Saami Siddiqui and fast bowlers Hammad Shahid and Naseer Jamali have been given their first senior team call-ups and will join their former U-19 teammates Taylor, Corns and Mohammed in Florida.Canada has named a full-strength squad to tour USA; seven members of the side that toured the UAE in March for the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier were selected to go to Florida. Rizwan Cheema will captain the 13-man squad, which includes just one player yet to earn a cap for Canada, Srimantha Wijeyratne.USA Squad: Danial Ahmed, Barrington Bartley, Adil Bhatti, Ryan Corns, Adrian Gordon, Naseer Jamali, Andy Mohammed, Japen Patel, Timil Patel, Hammad Shahid, Saami Siddiqui (wk), Nicholas Standford, Timothy Surujbally, Steven Taylor (wk).Canada Squad: Rizwan Cheema (captain), Khurram Chohan, Daesrath Damodar, Jeremy Gordon, Ruvindu Gunasekera, Jimmy Hansra, Usman Limbada, Henry Osinde, Hiral Patel, Raza-ur-Rehman, Junaid Siddiqui, Hamza Tariq (wk), Srimantha Wijeyratne.

Morgan to put Tests above IPL

Eoin Morgan insists he will turn his back on his lucrative IPL contract if it helps him regain a place in England’s Test side

George Dobell27-Aug-2012

While the riches on offer in the IPL may have turned the head of Kevin Pietersen, Eoin Morgan insists he will turn his back on the most lucrative competition in world cricket if it helps him regain a place in England’s Test side.Morgan, who was dropped from the Test team after a grim series against Pakistan in the UAE, is contracted to the Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2013 IPL season, but said that international cricket will always take priority and that he would prefer to play county cricket next April and May if it helps him win back a Test place. While Morgan would, under the terms of his England and Middlesex contract, be entitled to miss the first four or five weeks of the English domestic season in order to play in the IPL, he knows he will need to impress in first-class cricket if he is to force his way back into the Test side. Certainly Morgan’s chances of impressing during the 2012 IPL season were limited as he failed to make it into the Kolkata side, though he has previously gone on record to credit the experience of training alongside players from around the world as hugely beneficial to his learning experience.”The bigger picture for me is playing Test cricket,” he said. “As a 15-year-old I came across to England to play Test cricket. It’s always been my priority. I’ve had a little sniff of it and I’ve absolutely loved it. I was in the side when we became No. 1 and I was on the Ashes tour as a spare batter. Nothing can ever come close to the stuff you experience as a winning Test-match side. If it came about that I was back in the Test team during the IPL I’d be the happiest bloke in the world.”Morgan’s words will delight England coach, Andy Flower. Flower has previously stated that “you’re not going to learn much about Test batting in the IPL” and blamed Pietersen’s desire to play the entire 2013 IPL season and maximise his earning from his £1.2 million deal with the Delhi Daredevils, as “the catalyst” in unsettling the player over recent months.Morgan, however, feels that the opportunity to play Test cricket is more important than the money on offer in T20 leagues. While he still harbours the hope that his improved form in limited-overs cricket – he looked back to his best in scoring an unbeaten 89 in 63 balls in the ODI against Australia at Lord’s in June – will win him a Test recall, he knows that if he is to convince the selectors that he is committed to regaining his Test place, he may well need to prove himself playing for Middlesex in the County Championship. And if that means missing out on the deals available in the Big Bash and the IPL it is a price he is prepared to pay.”Is Test cricket my priority? Absolutely. I’ve never doubted that. If I’m involved in international cricket, it always takes priority and if I’m within one or two positions of the Test team, then I’ll probably make the decision myself to come back and play county cricket. If I’m in the frame for a Test place, then things might have to change [regarding IPL availability], definitely. I looked into it a small bit this year but, because I was three or four places off the Test side I left it. I don’t think I can play Big Bash. If all goes well I’ll be on the Test tour, if not I’ll make other plans.”When anybody gets dropped they need to show that they’re in substantial form and that they’ve scored enough runs to justify their position in the side. They need to show they’ve come back a better player. Looking back I’m a better player than I was at the start of the year. I’ve proven that in spurts over the summer. Hopefully again I can do that again during this ODI series against South Africa.”Morgan’s first-class record is modest for a man with aspirations of playing more Test cricket. He has not scored a first-class century since the Edgbaston Test over 12 months ago and, in his seven-year career with Middlesex, averages just 32.71. His record this season is even more disappointing: he has averaged only 18.16 in the five County Championship matches he has played. While he has scored nine first-class centuries, only three of them have come in the Championship and none have been in the top division.Morgan’s next chance to impress the England selectors comes on Tuesday in the second ODI of the series against South Africa in Southampton. While he is quick to clarify that he has never had any problem with Pietersen personally, Morgan did admit that the opportunity provided to other players in Pietersen’s absence might have been beneficial.”Kevin is a world class cricketer and any team around the world would want him in their side,” Morgan said. “But there are issues surrounding him at the moment and it will take time to resolve them; the quicker that happens the better. Personally I didn’t find him difficult but I’ve not been around the Test team a lot.”The guys who have come in have done really well. Ian Bell has come in and been amazing and maybe the extra responsibility, in Ravi Bopara’s case, has helped him blossom as a cricketer. I’ve practised with Ravi for years and it’s now that he’s really showing the cricketer is capable of being and that’s great.”The focus as a side to is to progress up the rankings and build towards the World Cup and Champions Trophy next year. We’re making huge steps towards bringing in match-winners who can take the game by the scruff of the neck and move forward.”

Clarke inspires Warwickshire to bonus haul

Warwickshire might look back on the maximum eight bonus points gained from an otherwise dead day at Edgbaston as enormously significant

The thing with bonus points is that you never know when they might come in handy. Nottinghamshire proved it emphatically a couple of years ago when six on the last day of a rain-wrecked match against Lancashire gave them a Championship title that looked to have slipped through their grasp. So Warwickshire might look back on the maximum eight bonus points gained from an otherwise dead day at Edgbaston as enormously significant should the race for this year’s title come down to similar margins. With the extra three for a draw, they emerge from this latest soggy round of matches as Division One leaders, one point ahead of Nottinghamshire, with a game in hand. Remember, too, that they meet Nottinghamshire twice in the final three rounds. Not that you could call this a dead day, in any event, given the exhilarating way in which Warwickshire not only chased, but chased successfully, a five-point maximum with the bat, and then bowled out Sussex for 191 in 46.1 overs. Rikki Clarke made an unbeaten 110 from 105 balls and then took 3 for 19 to leave no doubt over who was Man of the Match, Jeetan Patel’s 5 for 77 notwithstanding. The scorecard may say ‘match drawn’ but, in the words of their captain, Jim Troughton, to Warwickshire it felt like a win.”I was tremendously impressed with the way the players performed after so much white ball cricket,” Troughton said. “It feels like a win. We looked to get 400, we looked to get nine wickets as well, and we bowled them out for good measure.”The performance with the bat smacked in particular of a side rippling with self-belief. At the start they were 175 for 3 from 65 overs, the point at which they were marooned last Thursday when the rain began, and yet wound up with 400 for 8 from 109.2.Mainly it was down to Clarke, who is so capable of high-speed destruction you wonder why he is not back on the England radar, at least for the one-day side. It is six years now since he last played yet is performing as well as he ever has. Realistically, you supposed Warwickshire might have a sniff of four batting points, if they pushed hard, but Clarke was of a mind to look beyond that, even, and made the improbable possible.Warwickshire were in the 89th over by the time they notched their second point and a lunchtime score of 293 for 6 from 96 overs still suggested four points was the most they could expect, a thought reinforced when Chris Woakes, another big hitter, fell for 12 soon afterwards, playing across the line to Luke Wright.Until then, Troughton’s return to form with the bat had looked as good as anything they would take from the day. The captain, who has been woefully short of runs, exceeded his aggregate from nine previous Championship innings this season when he reached 51. Though he was clearly cross with himself when he was caught at first slip, slashing at a ball from James Anyon to be out for 81, his disappointment at missing the opportunity to complete only his second Championship hundred in three seasons should not negate the boost to his confidence that these overdue runs will surely provide. But after Woakes went – and with significant help from Keith Barker, who hit 34 off 31 balls – Clarke transformed the picture, advancing from 71 to 105 in just 16 deliveries, culminating in one extraordinary over against the offspin of Chris Nash that yielded 20 on its own, including a six over the bowler’s head that took him into three figures. It left Warwickshire with only four to get from two overs to reach 400 inside 110 overs and when Patel scooped a ball from Magoffin over the slip area for four the job was done.At this point, Warwickshire would have been content enough to take eight points from the match and trail Nottinghamshire by just two but Sussex had an interest in trying for at least one point with the bat and this played into the home side’s hands.Sussex made a flying start as Woakes and Barker struggled for early accuracy and were 26 without loss after only three overs when Woakes made a fortunate breakthrough when Ed Joyce tickled one down the leg side. Then Nash was caught at slip as Patel made his first incision.Luke Wells and Murray Goodwin steered Sussex back to an even keel but there was no keeping Clarke out of the game. Introduced at 87 for 2 he struck with his second ball, aided by a fine catch by William Porterfield, to remove Goodwin and claim a first bowling point. It seemed to have a galvanising effect on Warwickshire’s mood in the field, which became bouncier still when Matt Prior then drove at Patel rather lavishly and was caught at mid-on.Ian Bell, fielding at midwicket, missed a chance when Wells was 24 but took another one with the Sussex player only two runs better off to give Clarke his second wicket, which was quickly followed by a third as Darren Maddy took a brilliant, one-handed catch diving to his left at second slip to remove Michael Yardy. With the second bowling point in the bag, Warwickshire had the bit between their teeth and Sussex, obligingly, never gave up their pursuit of a batting point. After Patel had claimed his third victim as Naved Arif nudged one to slip, Luke Wright pulled Chris Wright straight to deep point and Warwickshire celebrated as if they had won when James Anyon was leg before. A fifth success for Patel was simply a bonus.Troughton said that setting up a positive result had been discussed. “It would have been nice to have got that bit further ahead with a win and we did talk about contriving something,” he said. “But what they were looking was not really close to what we were looking at.”In any case, on the balance of things we were lucky to get on the park at all, otherwise we would have been walking away with just three points.”We know what is to come later in the season but our way has just been to think about winning the next ball, the next over, the next session. We haven’t thought about where we are in the league.”
