Atenção total: começa no Botafogo a Missão Bahia – parte I

– Vamos jogo a jogo nestas situações específicas.

Contrived chase comes to nothing

The weather was the winner as Leicestershire’s County Championship Division Two game against Essex at Grace Road ended in a tame draw

19-May-2012
ScorecardThe weather was the winner as Leicestershire’s County Championship Division Two game against Essex at Grace Road ended in a tame draw.Essex were set a victory target of 270 in 60 overs, but in gloomy conditions umpires Peter Willey and Jeremy Lloyds finally abandoned the game at 3.45pm, with Essex on 30 for 2 from 12.2 overs. The draw earned Essex 10 points and Leicestershire nine.A steady drizzle throughout the morning prevented any play before lunch, and Leicestershire resumed their second innings on 148 for 3 with 26 overs having been lost because of the stoppage. But, in an attempt to fashion a positive result, Leicestershire were fed a diet of declaration bowling, and thrashed 158 runs off 7.3 overs before calling a halt to the carnage.Ned Eckersley smashed 70 off 19 balls, hitting 13 fours and two sixes, Wayne White hit 50 off 12 and Ramnaresh Sarwan went from his overnight 61 to 98 in a matter of minutes before skying a catch to midwicket.Adam Wheater conceded 86 runs in four overs and Mark Pettini 72 in 3.1 overs to enable Leicestershire to declare on 306 for five and set Essex 270 to win in 60 overs, but the chase never materialised.Alviro Petersen was run out by a direct hit on the stumps from Josh Cobb and Billy Godleman edged behind chasing a delivery outside the off stump from Robbie Joseph. One ball later the umpires decided the light was not good enough to continue and, with no sign of any improvement, abandoned the game after an early tea had been taken.

West Indies aim for big improvement

ESPNcricinfo’s preview of the second T20 between West Indies and Australia in Barbados

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale29-Mar-2012Match factsKieron Pollard made a 20-ball half-century on Tuesday but ran out of time to add much more to his score•AFP

March 30, Kensington Oval
Start time 1400 (1800 GMT)Big PictureThe first Twenty20 on Tuesday was one of the most one-sided matches of the tour so far. Australia kept West Indies to 150 and then chased down the target with 11 balls to spare and eight wickets in hand, which by T20 standards is a trouncing. West Indies have responded by dropping Darren Bravo, who was scratchy, but what they really need from their top order is fewer dot balls and more turning over of the strike. A few more boundaries wouldn’t hurt either. If Johnson Charles gets going he can be dangerous but two of the most destructive batsmen in West Indies’ order, Kieron Pollard and Darren Sammy, often bat too low to have a serious impact. They need to work out their batting order and ensure that too much is not left for the last few overs. There was a lot to like about Australia’s performance on Tuesday, from the death bowling of Shane Watson and Brett Lee to the century stand between Watson and Michael Hussey, who complemented each other perfectly. Under George Bailey, this side is starting to find its feet. Brad Hogg would likely be in Australia’s best XI – he was rotated out of this tour to give Xavier Doherty and Nathan Lyon a chance – but otherwise expect a very similar side to this outfit when Australia play their first match of the World T20 in Sri Lanka later this year. For now, the aim is to win the series 2-0 after the drawn ODI series.Form guide(Most recent first)
West Indies LLWLL
Australia WLWLWIn the spotlightIt was hard to believe that Kieron Pollard’s fifty on Tuesday was his first in a T20 international. Part of the reason is that he has often batted down the order, and West Indies might wish to give him more time in the middle after his brutal display in St Lucia, where he raced to a 20-ball half-century, the quickest ever by a West Indian in a T20 international. The more time he has at the crease the faster the match could be dragged out of Australia’s grasp.Michael Hussey helped Australia to victory with an unbeaten 59 batting at No.3 on Tuesday, and it was his first T20 international in nearly two years. Often he had been rested before or after a big Test and one-day tour, and he remains a key to Australia’s chances in the ICC World T20 later this year. His poise and precision placement make him a valuable batsman in this format and playing at first drop allows him to have significant influence.Team newsWest Indies have dropped Darren Bravo and the allrounder Andre Russell is unavailable due to a minor hamstring strain, while Danza Hyatt has been included in the squad. Fidel Edwards should come into consideration on his home ground, where there should be some pace in the pitch.West Indies (possible) 1 Johnson Charles, 2 Dwayne Smith, 3 Nkrumah Bonner, 4 Danza Hyatt, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Darren Sammy (capt), 8 Carlton Baugh (wk), 9 Fidel Edwards, 10 Krishmar Santokie, 11 Sunil Narine.Australia have confirmed an unchanged side for the second T20.Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Michael Hussey, 4 George Bailey (capt), 5 David Hussey, 6 Matthew Wade (wk), 7 Daniel Christian, 8 Brett Lee, 9 James Pattinson, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Xavier Doherty.Pitch and conditionsThis is the first match at Kensington Oval on this tour and the pitch is expected to be an excellent batting surface with some pace in it.Stats and trivia Due to their schedule at the ICC World Twenty20 in 2010, Australia have played more Twenty20s (5) at Kensington Oval than West Indies (3) The toss can be important at this venue, with nine of the 12 T20s played there having been won by the team that batted firstQuotes”We’ll just be doing exactly what we did last game. We addressed our death bowling at the end of the one-day fixture and I think we did that really well [on Tuesday].”

Riaz working on new-ball skills

Wahab Riaz, the Pakistan fast bowler, has said he needs to work on mastering the ability to bowl with the new ball

Wahab Riaz wants to win back his place in the Pakistan side•AFP

Wahab Riaz, the Pakistan fast bowler, has said he needs to work on mastering the ability to bowl with the new ball. He rued being only a fringe player in the England series but said he was working hard win to back his place.Pakistan rely heavily on spinners in all formats, with only Umar Gul being the established fast bowler. Two young quick bowlers, Junaid Khan and Mohammad Talha, have been troubled by injury while Aizaz Cheema has done well enough to keep his place in the XI over Riaz. One of Riaz’s strengths is his ability to obtain reverse-swing but with the use of new balls from each end in one-dayers, his effectiveness has been reduced. He is currently working with former fast-bowler Sarfraz Nawaz at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. “I am working hard to get more control when bowling with the new ball,” Riaz said. “Unfortunately I didn’t get enough chances to bowl against England, but I am confident that I will be an improved bowler in the Asia Cup.”Riaz, 26, had a memorable Test debut, taking a five-for against England in August 2010, and made a further impact in limited-overs cricket by collecting his maiden ODI five-for in the World Cup semi-final against India. He was included in the Pakistan squad against England in UAE but played only one ODI in which he was taken for 47 runs in seven wicket-less overs. He hasn’t had too much to smile about since his career-best performance against India in Mohali, but was looking to regain his lost form. “Repeating that India performance is the best way to build my reputation,” Riaz said. “It’s all about confidence as I hardly got an opportunity to bowl with the new ball.”Pakistan didn’t organise a formal training camp before the Asia Cup but called up all their top fast bowlers to train ahead of the four-nation tournament. “He [Sarfraz] is helping me a lot in tackling different situations, mainly [teaching me] how to execute with the new ball,” Riaz said. “I am bowling long spells with the new ball and I am sure whenever I have the ball in my hand, I won’t disappoint the captain.”Sarfraz, now a NCA fast-bowling consultant who is filling in for outgoing coach Aaqib Javed, was confident that his charges will click in the Asia Cup. “I did enough to tune them, now it’s up to them how they perform,” Sarfraz said. “Wahab’s got heart as a fast bowler but was off rhythm due to a minor technical flaw that we have sorted out now.”Pakistan will play their first match against Bangladesh on Sunday and take on Sri Lanka on March 15, before going head-to-head with arch-rivals India on March 18.”What a captain always wants is an effective bowling attack, which gets the wickets for the team,” Sarfraz said. “Misbah [-ul-Haq] said that the pacers were not utilising the new balls effectively but I have tried my level best to sort that out. What I know is that we have the best bowlers – they may be inconsistent, but are really dangerous in all conditions.”Edited by Siddarth Ravindran

New Zealand sweep series with 202-run win

A violent opening stand and a superbly-paced Brendon McCullum ton handed New Zealand their third huge win in as many one-dayers, as Zimbabwe fell 202 runs short of their gargantuan target of 374

The Report by Andrew Fernando09-Feb-2012

Smart stats

Brendon McCullum scored his fourth century in his 198th match. It is also his highest score against Zimbabwe. The strike rate of 135.71 is the highest for a 100-plus score for McCullum.

McCullum’s century is also the third-highest score and the eighth century overall to be scored by a captain-wicketkeeper in ODIs. MS Dhoni is the only player to do so more than once (four occasions).

Both Brian Vitori and Elton Chigumbura went for over 90 runs in the New Zealand innings. This is the first time in ODIs that two bowlers have conceded 90-plus runs in the same innings.

Vitori also narrowly missed out on becoming the bowler to concede the most runs in an innings, a record held by Mick Lewis, who conceded 113 runs against South Africa in 2006. However, his economy rate of 11.66 is the highest among bowlers who have bowled at least eight overs in an innings.

New Zealand, who scored 373, surpassed their total of 372 which they made in the second ODI. The 373 is their third-highest total overall in ODIs and the second-highest against Zimbabwe after the 397 in Bulawayo in 2005.

New Zealand’s victory margin of 202 runs is their largest in ODIs against Zimbabwe and their fourth-largest overall. It is also the fifth time they have won by a margin of 200 runs or more.

For the second time in two ODIs and the third time against Zimbabwe overall, New Zealand hit 16 sixes in their innings. It is the joint second-highest on the list of most sixes hit in an innings by any team.

The opening pair of Rob Nicol and Martin Guptill went past their previous best partnership of 131 with a 153-run stand. It equals the third-highest opening stand for New Zealand against Zimbabwe.

Ray Price became the fourth Zimbabwe bowler to reach the 100-wicket mark in ODIs. His average of 35.75 is second only to Heath Streak’s 29.81 among Zimbabwe bowlers with over 100 wickets.

A violent opening stand and a superbly-paced Brendon McCullum ton handed New Zealand their third huge win in as many one-dayers, as Zimbabwe fell 202 runs short of their gargantuan target of 374. Martin Guptill and Rob Nicol added 153 in 22 overs to provide the platform once more, before McCullum’s 88-ball 119 propelled New Zealand beyond 370 for the second consecutive innings. Brendan Taylor’s 65 was the only knock of note in Zimbabwe’s reply with the visitors once more opting to spend time in the middle rather than go for the unlikely win. Zimbabwe were dismissed for 172 in the 44th over.McCullum consolidated to begin with, following the quick demise of both openers, before exploiting some woeful death bowling to hurtle past 100. Keen not to let the early tempo abate, McCullum opted for the batting Powerplay in the 29th over with Jacob Oram for company, but allowed his partner to attempt the big shots while he turned over the strike. He continued to accumulate alongside Kane Williamson, as the flat Napier wicket and a worsening Zimbabwe attack allowed risk-free progress.McCullum got a life on 48; Zimbabwe have seemed intent on giving every New Zealand batsman one of those at some point in the series, and it must have been his turn. Having worked his way to a run-a-ball strike-rate soon after reaching fifty, McCullum exploded in the 43rd over, launching Elton Chigumbura over long-off, before carving Kyle Jarvis through cover. Zimbabwe served up full tosses, half-volleys and length deliveries abundantly, and McCullum duly gorged, slapping Chigumbura into the leg-side stands twice in a row, before demolishing the woeful Brian Vitori to complete Zimbabwe’s misery.McCullum’s breathless finish was set up by Guptill and Nicol, who began laying waste to the Zimbabwe attack almost immediately, as they carried New Zealand’s Whangarei belligerence to Napier. Utterly unafraid of a pedestrian attack that had failed to test them throughout the tour, the pair had seemingly decided they would test themselves – by igniting the New Zealand innings at the most furious pace yet.Nicol survived two close calls, one lbw shout that was overturned on review, and a top-edged pull that was predictably shelled, but apart from those early stutters, precious little troubled the openers. They blasted seven sixes and 13 fours between them, and took their combined half-century tally to five in three matches. Only Nicol missed out in the first ODI of the series.Zimbabwe’s bowlers rarely bowled two balls in the same place, but their woes were not all their own making against batsmen so cocksure, they could dispatch any ball in their chosen direction. Guptill favoured the leg side as he moved around the crease to pepper the ropes with an array of sweeps, paddles, pulls and pick-ups. Nicol meanwhile preferred to manipulate length by advancing, carting two balls over the stands at square leg.Spin and a spread-out field stymied the breakneck pace somewhat after the first 10 overs, but while Nicol reined in his game, Guptill continued to attack, beating the field with innovation rather than power. When Taylor brought in fine leg to push long-off back, Guptill shovelled the next ball over his shoulder. When the leg side was strengthened, he shuffled to leg to send the ball screeching through the covers.Guptill was eventually stumped as he knotted himself up after advancing down the pitch, a ball after Nicol had also fallen, but McCullum’s furious innings ensured the base wasn’t squandered.Williamson accumulated busily, before Nathan McCullum thumped 21 runs off seven balls – 18 of them coming from the three successive sixes off Vitori, who became only the fourth bowler to concede over 100 runs in an ODI innings, and that despite bowling one over short. For the fifth time in as many innings on tour, Zimbabwe’s openers failed to reach double figures. As has been the case throughout the tour, Taylor was the only Zimbabwe player that batted positively, even dominating the New Zealand attack at times. Taylor measured out aggression methodically, rarely straying from the routine of rotating the strike after boundary hits, instead of attempting to tear apart a disciplined attack.Once he fell at 115 for 5, New Zealand simply stayed patient to wait for the remaining wickets. Tarun Nethula had an impressive second spell that yielded his first two international scalps, as he found the confidence to flight and turn the ball after a nervous debut. Doug Bracewell and Michael Bates were both lively, considering the flatness of the pitch, and picked up a wicket apiece, before Nathan McCullum polished off the tail to end the hopelessly one-sided series.

Mumbai welcomes back Ajit Agarkar

Ajit Agarkar, who walked out on Mumbai midway through the Ranji season, is among the probables for the domestic one-dayers

Nagraj Gollapudi07-Feb-2012

Ajit Agarkar made it clear to the MCA officials that if he was not picked in the playing XI, he would rather sit at home than “carry water”•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Ajit Agarkar, who had pulled out of the Mumbai squad midway through the Ranji Trophy season after he was dropped for the group match against Orissa, has been included among the 25 probables for the West Zone one-dayers of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.Agarkar met with Milind Rege, Mumbai’s chairman of selectors, Ratnakar Shetty, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) vice-president, and Nitin Dalal, the MCA secretary on Monday afternoon to sort out the issues after Rege had messaged Agarkar last week, requesting for a meeting. It is understood that at the meeting, which lasted 45 minutes, both Agarkar and the MCA management regretted what had happened.”I am always happy to play for Mumbai and am looking forward to the return,” Agarkar told ESPNcricinfo. “I obviously can’t change what has happened. I now look forward to the one-dayers if selected.”On November 29, Mumbai were to start their Elite group match against Orissa in Cuttack. But the previous evening Agarkar was informed by the pair of Sulakshan Kulkarni and Wasim Jaffer (Mumbai coach and captain respectively) that he was not part of the playing XI. It was also Zaheer Khan’s first game of the Ranji season, as part of his recovery process from the injury he picked up during last year’s England tour.Annoyed at being dropped, Agarkar flew back to Mumbai on the morning of the match. The issue snowballed into a controversy after Zaheer supported Agarkar’s decision and blamed the pair of Rege and Kulkarni for “pulling down” Mumbai cricket. Thereafter Agarkar, who had played only one match in the season (against Karnataka and went wicketless) made himself unavailable for selection despite calls from Dalal and Shetty, who asked him to reconsider. In his absence, Mumbai’s fast bowling department lacked a leader. After Mumbai’s lukewarm performance during the Ranji Trophy campaign where they bowed out of the semi-finals against Tamil Nadu, the pressure increased on the selectors and the team management. Consequently, Wasim Jaffer, Mumbai’s captain for the last four years, stepped down, unhappy at the remarks expressed by Kulkarni to the media.Probably as a damage-control measure, Rege tried to convince Agarkar to return, to avoid any further rumblings in the dressing room.At Monday’s meeting, Agarkar once again made it clear to the MCA officials that if he was not picked in the playing XI, he would rather sit at home than “carry water.” “It is not that I have not been twelfth man in my life but there is a merit to it,” Agarkar said.Agarkar asked for a day to think over it before arriving at a decision. But later that evening, he called up Dalal to confirm his availability. Agarkar, who plays for the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, said he also needed some match practice before the tournament begins in April, and the one-day tournament would be a good platform to get back to fitness.Probables: Ajinkya Rahane, Wasim Jaffer, Ajit Agarkar, Ramesh Powar, Aavishkar Salvi, Dhaval Kulkarni, Abhishek Nayar, Anup Revandkar, Praful Waghela, Siddharth Chitnis, Iqbal Abdullah, Ankit Chavan, Suryakumar Yadav, Parag Khanapurkar, Aditya Tare, Sushant Marathe, Kumar Subramanian, Balwinder Singh Sandhu Jnr, Kshemal Waingankar, Akhil Herwadkar, Kaustubh Pawar, Usman Malvi, Santosh Shinde, Murtuza Hussain, Shoaib Shaikh
