Collingwood contemplates Test future

Paul Collingwood has admitted that his Test future is on the line, and recognises the need to make a big contribution in the final Test of the Ashes series at Sydney

Paul Collingwood has admitted that his Test future is on the line, and recognises the need to make a big contribution in the final Test of the Ashes series at Sydney, after a troubling run of form in which he has made 11 or less in eight of his last ten Test innings.Collingwood’s last Test innings of note was his 82 in the first innings against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in July, in which he formed a matchwinning partnership with the centurion, Eoin Morgan, who is now his chief rival for a permanent berth in the middle order. In the current Ashes campaign he has made 70 runs at 14.00, with a top score of 42 at Adelaide.”My form during this series and most recently my latest failure in the fourth Test in Melbourne means the subject of my Test future was bound to be raised sooner or later,’ Collingwood was quoted as saying by the Mail on Sunday.”I am obviously disappointed with the series I have had with the bat so far. I can’t get away from the fact that scoring runs is my job in the side, so I won’t hide away. I have still got a lot of fight left in me. I honestly feel as fit as I have ever been. I am enjoying Test cricket and playing for England more than I ever have done and our success, and if you are enjoying it why would you give it up?”But on a personal level, this is a big week for me in Sydney,” he added. “I am at the crossroads and what happens in the final Test may well determine what direction I go in. I am sure by the end of this Test, I will know more myself and be better able to judge what the general feeling is in terms of where I am as a Test player and the contribution I can still make to the England team in future and what is the best way forward.”Collingwood has barely missed a Test in four years since he secured a permanent spot in the middle order on the tour of India in March 2006, and he is an integral member of the limited-overs squad as well, particularly the Twenty20 team which he captained to victory in the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean in May. However, at the age of 34, and with the World Cup in the subcontinent looming as his next big challenge, the time may be nigh to step down from the longest form of the game.”The desire within me to go out and score a hundred against Australia in Sydney, help the team to a 3-1 win and crack on is still strong,” he said. “Yet, at the same time, I understand the arguments 100 per cent and I understand there are other batsmen after my spot. And the bottom line is that, at my age, if you are not scoring runs yourself you do not deserve a place in the side.”

Worker anchors Northern Districts' win

Northern Districts held their nerve to clinch a thrilling one-wicket win over Central Districts at Fitzherbert Park to move to the top of the points table after the second round of the New Zealand Cricket one-day competition

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Jan-2011Northern Districts held their nerve to clinch a thrilling one-wicket win over Central Districts at Fitzherbert Park to move to the top of the points table after the second round of the New Zealand Cricket one-day competition.Opener George Worker’s century anchored CD’s total of 280 after they were sent in to bat. CD lost Peter Ingram and Jamie How early, but Worker added 149 with Mathew Sinclair for the third wicket to set the base for a competitive total. Sinclair, who made 66, was dismissed in the 41st over with CD’s score on 206, and Worker followed in the next over. Kieran Noema-Barnett and Tim Weston blasted 64 off just 38 balls to provide the CD innings with a closing flourish. ND’s chase of 281 got off solidly with the openers BJ Watling and Daniel Flynn adding 88 within the first 18 overs. ND lost three quick wickets but Flynn’s 60-run fourth-wicket partnership with Brad Wilson, got the ND chase back on track. ND lost Flynn in the 43rd over but some big hitting from James Marshall and Bradley Scott, who was unbeaten on 25 off just 10 balls, carried them home, with just one ball to spare.Canterbury posted a comfortable 99-run win over Otago at the Queenstown Events Centre. Canterbury batsmen Rob Nicol, Michael Papps and Peter Fulton all posted solid half-centuries. Shannan Stewart and Andrew Ellis made unbeaten quickfire twenties as Canterbury reached 296 for 4 in their 50 overs. Otago started disastrously losing Aaron Redmond and Neil Broom with just 15 runs on the board. Michael Bracewell (68) and Craig Cumming (46) tried to salvage the innings with a 110-run third wicket partnership. However, once they were dismissed, the Otago innings lost momentum. The Canterbury bowlers never allowed the remaining Otago batsmen to get away as they were bowled out for 197 in the 47th over.Auckland beat Wellington by eight runs in a close game at Colin Maiden Park. The Auckland innings was anchored by captain Gareth Hopkins’ 96-ball 120. He shared crucial partnerships with Anaru Kitchen and Kyle Mills to power Auckland to a formidable 308. Wellington got off to a shaky start losing openers Josh Brodie and Stewart Rhodes within the first four overs with just five runs on the board. Grant Elliott and James Franklin put on 112 runs as the Wellington innings gained momentum. Harry Boam hit eight boundaries in his 36-ball 59 before he was dismissed. Wellington needed 45 runs off 24 balls at the stage and though Dewayne Bowden (23) got them close with some big shots, they failed to get across the line, falling short by eight runs.

Sri Lanka fight back after Nash, Chanderpaul stand

Only 41 overs of play were possible on the second day at Pallekele, before rain intervened once again to bring a premature end to play

Brendan Nash carried West Indies on the second day with a fluent half-century•AFP

Only 41 overs of play were possible on the second day at Pallekele, before rain intervened once again to bring a premature end to play. A charged up Sri Lanka made two quick breakthroughs after lunch to even things up after Brendan Nash and Shivnarine Chanderpaul capitalised on a flat Sri Lankan bowling effort and a comical missed run out opportunity in the morning session. Sri Lanka’s resurgence in the nine overs after the break had West Indies at 245 for 5 by the time the heavens opened up.A maiden century beckoned yet again for Darren Bravo as he began the second morning with the same nonchalant aplomb he had displayed for much of the previous day. Dilhara Fernando overpitched in the second over and Darren eased it casually past cover for four, seeming to have lost none of the form or fluency from his overnight 63. But he was out soon after crossing 50 for the third time in four innings this series. Fernando bent one in, off a full length, to rap Darren on the pads and despite the hasty review, Bravo was dismissed for 68.While Shivnarine Chanderpaul was circumspect in the early exchanges, Brendan Nash didn’t take long to come to grips with the pitch, leaning back to slap Fernando behind point to get off the mark before racking up 1000 Test runs with a clip to the leg side after two more boundaries. The runs kept coming at a decent pace for Nash, as he picked the gaps and dispatched loose deliveries, while Kumar Sangakkara strove for wickets with attacking fields. Nash brought up his eighth Test half-century before lunch and was unbeaten on 62 when the weather intervened.Chanderpaul eventually found his feet against the spinners, rotating the strike efficiently towards the end of the session and leaving the boundary-hitting to his more fluent partner. He was given lbw by the on-field umpire when he missed a reverse-sweep off Herath on 38, but the review showed the ball to be brushing the glove before it hit the fore-arm guard, and the decision was overturned in his favour. Chanderpaul progressed to his first half-century of the series with a bottom-edged sweep off Herath, but was caught spectacularly at slip soon after. He attempted a late dab off Ajantha Mendis, but Mahela Jayawardene was onto it in a flash. Jayawardene dove to his left and plucked the ball one-handed, centimetres from the turf, ending the stand on 99.Dwayne Bravo fell in the following over to Herath, who made an immediate impact after being kept out of the attack for 58 overs. He had beaten Dwayne’s edge two balls prior, but sucked him in completely with a flighted delivery that dipped and turned. Bravo barely had time to register that he had over-balanced before Prasanna Jayawardene had the bails off.Suranga Lakmal was consistent in his morning spell, but was rarely threatening. He never strayed far from the channel outside off stump, yet was unable to extract enough movement to worry the batsmen. Angelo Mathews, too, was negotiated without fuss by Nash and Chanderpaul, and Fernando was wayward despite Darren’s wicket. The double-strike after lunch had the game finely balanced and the teams will be hoping for better weather over the remainder of the match if there is to be any hope of a result.

Aston Villa: Lange receives De Vrij boost

Aston Villa have received a huge boost in their pursuit of Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij, following reports regarding his potential price tag.

What’s the word?

As per Football Insider sources, the Dutchman has reportedly been told he can leave the San Siro this summer, with any prospective buyer likely to only have to fork out £15m to secure his services in the upcoming window.

The report suggests that the 30-year-old – whose exiting deal is set to expire in June 2023 – is ‘yet to open talks’ regarding a potential contract extension, hence the drop off in the Serie A outfit’s asking price, having previously been valued at roughly £40m.

A previous report from the same publication revealed that Villa boss Steven Gerrard ‘wants to sign’ a high profile centre-back this summer with De Vrij one of those on the club’s radar, although they are likely to face competition from both Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United.

Lange must move

The stars are aligning for a potential swoop for the Midlands side, with the former Lazio man seemingly the key to solving their defensive woes, amid reports that they are keen on a new left-sided centre-back.

Although he has slotted in as part of a back three during his stint in Milan – as well as for his country – the 55-cap international would seemingly be able to comfortable slot in to a back four, while also offering Gerrard the flexibility to switch formation should he so wish.

At present, the Villa Park outfit have the tenth-worst defensive record in the Premier League, having conceded 46 goals so far this season, with the arrival of such a high-quality addition likely to alter that.

The £31.5m-rated man – who has been dubbed a “monster” by former teammate Maurizio – has impressed thus far in Simone Inzaghi’s title-chasing side, winning 61% of his total duels, while also registering 1.8 clearances, 1.3 tackles and one interception per game in his 27 league outings.

A Scudetto-winner under current Spurs boss Antonio Conte last term, the £116k-per-week man offers a wealth of experience to a Villa side that currently find themselves in the wrong half of the table, while he also represents another potential high profile capture following the January arrivals of Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne.

Sporting director Johan Lange can prove just how ambitious both he and the club are by adding De Vrij to that list of notable acquisitions, with the defender offering undoubted quality at a bargain price.

Unsettled West Indies face tough task

ESPNcricinfo previews the first Test between Sri Lanka and West Indies in Galle

The Preview by Siddarth Ravindran14-Nov-2010Match FactsMonday, November 15
Start time 10.00 (04.30 GMT)
Does Dwayne Bravo still have the appetite for Test cricket?•AFP

The Big PictureTwo teams in a transitional phase come face-to-face in Galle on Monday. West Indies are led by Darren Sammy, a man who till last month wasn’t even sure of his place in the Test side. Two of their senior batsmen – Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo – have turned down central contracts in favour of keeping their options open for the lucre that comes with being Twenty20 freelancers. Another senior batsman, Ramnaresh Sarwan, wasn’t even offered a contract, which caused more controversy, and is not part of the squad. In addition, they are without their two best fast bowlers – Jerome Taylor and Fidel Edwards – both of whom have long-term injuries.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have to come to terms with losing their greatest match-winner, Muttiah Muralitharan. No more can their captain toss the ball to Murali and expect the wickets to tumble. They are also pondering how best to use their limited-overs spearhead, Lasith Malinga, whose injury-prone body they are unwilling to subject to the rigours of Test cricket ahead of the World Cup. It leaves Kumar Sangakkara and the team management with the challenge of grooming a bowling combination that can regularly take 20 wickets in a Test.
The other similarity between the two teams is that neither of them have played much Test cricket in 2010, having had to make do with one three-Test home series each so far this year.Sri Lanka will start the series as clear favourites. Their No. 3 ranking puts them four spots above the West Indies, and they have a decent home record to be proud of – losing only one series in more than six years. West Indies, in contrast, haven’t won a series away from home – except against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe – since early 1995. They have a dreadful record in Sri Lanka as well, losing all five Tests in their previous two series and drawing the lone match on their first visit back in 1993.Form guide(most recent first)
Sri Lanka: LDWLL
West Indies: LDLLDWatch out for…Adrian Barath announced himself with a sparkling century on Test debut late last year, but injuries have hampered his progress since. He has played only one first-class match in 2010, and hasn’t been in the best of form in the domestic season. This series, though, will provide another chance to see how his potentially exciting opening partnership with Gayle develops.Thilan Samaraweera is unsure whether he’ll find a place in the one-day outfit, but he is a dead-cert when it comes to Tests. Whether he’s good enough to boast of a 50-plus average has been debated for long but Sri Lanka won’t care as long as he keeps performing like he did in his previous Test – making a century in the first innings, and 83 in the second to lift his side from the depths of 87 for 7.TeamsSri Lanka’s batting is pretty settled, with Nos 1 to 7 being guaranteed starters. The bowling isn’t though, in the absence of Malinga and Murali. Suraj Randiv has been picked out by Sangakkara as Sri Lanka’s main spinner, so he’s likely to play but it remains to be seen who will partner him. The fast bowlers will have an additional responsibilty as Angelo Mathews won’t be bowling his medium-pacers due to a thigh strain.Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Tharanga Paranavitana, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Thilan Samaraweera, 7 Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 8 Suraj Randiv, 9 Rangana Herath, 10 Dilhara Fernando, 11 Chanaka Welegedera
West Indies are also missing key fast bowlers which leaves the young Kemar Roach as their pace spearhead. The pitch is expected to assist spinners, but will West Indies pick both Sulieman Benn and Shane Shillingford, or go with one spinner and expect Gayle to send down a few overs?West Indies (probable) 1 Adrian Barath, 2 Chris Gayle, 3 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 4 Brendan Nash, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Darren Bravo, 7 Darren Sammy (capt), 8 Carlton Baugh (wk), 9 Kemar Roach, 10 Nelon Pascal, 11 Sulieman BennQuotes”Randiv has become the main spinner in the squad, while Herath is an experienced bowler who has done a great job for us. We expect Mendis to come back very strongly.”

“You saw Sri Lanka just won in Australia where they had never won (a one-day series). It’s an opportunity for the guys to use this as a motivation and go out there and be competitive and consistent.”
