Sunderland in danger of losing Chris Rigg

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman is poised to endure a busy summer of work at the Stadium of Light at the end of the season.

Irrespective of what division the Black Cats are competing in next term, he will be tasked with putting together a squad for Alex Neil to work with – either to stay in the Championship or fight for promotion out of League One.

Speakman will also need to keep hold of the club’s talented young players to give Neil a pool of academy prospects to nurture with a view to them making their way through to the first team in the future.

One such gem who they are in danger of losing is 14-year-old Chris Rigg as Newcastle and Everton are reportedly keen on a deal for him this summer.

Rigg is already playing for the U18’s at the age of 14 and Sunderland are said to want £1m from any interested parties.

They must now avoid repeating the brutal disasterclass they endured when they sold teenager Joe Hugill to Manchester United for £300k. The striker has since been compared to England captain Harry Kane and is progressing through the ranks at Old Trafford.

Sky Sports News reporter James Cooper said this about the youngster: “Joe Hugill’s progress has come as a pleasant surprise to the coaching staff at Manchester United who recognised his potential when they brought him in from Sunderland.

“But the speed of that progress has exceeded expectations, bearing in mind he’s only been at the club for three months.

“Hugill was part of a recruitment drive that has seen some of Europe’s best young talent arrive at Manchester United in recent weeks to not only bolster the club’s Academy but also provide Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with more options further down the line.”

These quotes and the comparisons to Kane suggest that Sunderland dropped a clanger by allowing him to leave for £300k.

Speakman must now ensure that they do not repeat that mistake with Rigg. He cannot allow the talented youngster to leave the Stadium of Light and must do everything in his power to convince the teenager that staying at the club is the best option for him.

Sunderland fans do not want to be sat on their sofas in six years watching Rigg dominating in the Premier League and wondering how they only got £1m for him in 2022.

Adams and Vince strike hundreds

Hampshire opener Jimmy Adams and team-mate James Vince both plundered unbeaten centuries as Yorkshire took a pounding on the third day of the County Championship match at Scarborough

25-Aug-2010
ScorecardHampshire opener Jimmy Adams and team-mate James Vince both plundered unbeaten centuries as Yorkshire took a pounding on the third day of the County Championship match at Scarborough. It was a maiden century for talented teenager Vince, who is developing a batting style similar to that of Michael Vaughan, while it was the latest in a line of good scores by Adams against Yorkshire. He first made his mark at Headingley in 2006 by converting his maiden century into an unbeaten 168 as Hampshire successfully chased down a 404 target and he went on to add a further five half-centuries before his latest effort.By close of play, Adams (162) and 19-year-old Vince (122) had put on an unbroken 215 for the fourth wicket to propel Hampshire to 367 for 3 and give them a first innings lead of 45.Hampshire began the day on eight without loss and Yorkshire had Richard Pyrah in their side as replacement for Tim Bresnan, who had joined up with his England team-mates at Lord’s.Ajmal Shahzad and Steve Patterson shared the attack but did little to trouble either Adams or Michael Carberry and the other pace bowlers were generally ineffective. Yorkshire turned for a while to the spin of Adil Rashid and Adams helped himself to two fours in his first over to complete a half-century which contained 11 boundaries. The century stand was reached in 31 overs but just before lunch it was Pyrah who split the pair by having Carberry caught at second slip by Anthony McGrath for 40.Adams and Chris Benham continued to make life difficult for Yorkshire in the afternoon until Shahzad produced an almost unplayable delivery which hit the top of Benham’s off-stump and Patterson then responded at the other end by forcing Neil McKenzie to chop into his stumps without scoring.Any thoughts of a batting collapse quickly disappeared, however, as Vince joined Adams in a massive stand which saw Adams go to his century shortly before tea. He had faced 194 balls and struck 17 fours.McGrath, who bowled a brief spell of off-spin before the interval, reverted to his normal medium pace and when Adams was 108 he got a bottom edge which wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy could not quite hold on to.Vince’s 50 came off 64 balls with eight fours and he registered his career-best score when he cruised past 75. Adams had a couple of run-out scares at the non-striker’s end when returning to his crease and Vince survived a leaping attempt by Pyrah at backward point but otherwise the batsmen were in charge and Hampshire went calmly into the lead.Consecutive boundaries by Vince off Pyrah hurried him to his maiden century off 128 balls with 15 fours and he celebrated by waving his bat ecstatically in response to the ovation from his team-mates and the 4,700 crowd.Runs then continued to flow as the bowlers toiled without reward, with Hampshire holding the upper hand when the game goes into its final day.

CSA to probe "unauthorised" bonus payments to employees

Cricket South Africa has set up an independent review committee to investigate the payment of 4.7 million rand in performance bonuses to 40 CSA employees

CSA chief executive Gerald Majola will return the bonuses he was paid for hosting the 2009 IPL and ICC Champions Trophy•AFP

Cricket South Africa has set up an independent review committee to investigate the unauthorised payment of 4.7 million rand ($641,000) in performance bonuses to 40 CSA employees following the 2009 IPL tournament and ICC Champions trophy. The committee will be headed by former South Africa Chief Justice P Lanaga and assisted by forensic auditors from KPMG and Deloitte.According to CSA, the bonuses include 1.77 million rand ($241,000) paid to CEO Gerald Majola and 1.45 million rand ($198,000) paid to former chief operating officer Don McIntosh, with the balance being divided between the remaining employees. In the wake of the announcement, Majola has decided to repay the total bonus paid to him until the investigation is complete. McIntosh, who resigned from CSA last month, told the that his resignation had nothing to do with the bonus. The decision to probe the bonuses arose after the remuneration committee of CSA indicated that it had not authorised the payments. “As a result, the board of CSA at a board meeting on 4 and 11 August resolved to subject the entire matter to a comprehensive review by an independent committee,” CSA said in a statement.A written report on the matter has already been sent to the South Africa Minister of Sport and the committee will submit its own report to the CSA board once the investigation is complete. The committee is expected to begin its review in mid-September. CSA’s final accounts for the year, which are to be officially adopted on August 21, will accordingly reflect the investigation. The 2009 IPL was moved to South Africa at the last minute due to security concerns in India. The hosting of the tournament resulted in a dispute between the Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB), which manages the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, and the IPL.After the tournament ended, the GCB levelled allegations of mismanagement against Majola, the BCCI and the league. CSA responded by stripping the Wanderers of its international status. The Wanderers was reinstated as an international venue in August last year.

West Ham planning Bowen contract talks

West Ham United are set to open contract talks with Jarrod Bowen in a bid to keep the winger at the London Stadium beyond the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Evening Standard, who claim that, with Liverpool reported to be keeping an extremely close eye on the forward ahead of a potential move for the 25-year-old this summer, manager David Moyes is planning to open negotiations with the winger regarding the extension of his current deal in East London.

GSB must break the bank

Considering just how important a part of the Hammers side Bowen has become this season, the news that the club are looking to tie the forward down to a new long-term contract is sure to have left the London Stadium faithful buzzing.

Indeed, over his 25 Premier League appearances in the current campaign, the £59m-rated forward has been in breathtaking form for the Hammers, having already bagged eight goals, provided eight assists and created eight big chances for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 2.4 shots and making 1.3 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the £80k-per-week attacker average a quite astonishing SofaScore match rating of 7.16, ranking him as the Irons’ second-best performer in the top flight of English football – behind only England international Declan Rice.

As such, it is clear for all to see that the player, who ex-Irons defender Daniel Gabbidon once dubbed a “genius”, is a crucial part of the 58-year-old’s setup at the London Stadium, particularly considering the fact that the 25-year-old is one of the Hammers’ only viable options to fill in for Michail Antonio up top.

So, while it has also been reported that the Irons are also hoping to tie Tomas Soucek down to a new contract in the coming weeks, it would appear highly advisable for the West Ham board to break the bank with their offer to Bowen, as the England World Cup squad hopeful has more than proven this season that he deserves to be one of – if not the – club’s highest earner.

Newcastle: Allan Saint-Maximin struggled

Newcastle United put their three-match losing streak to bed with a 1-0 win over Wolves in the Premier League on Friday night.

Eddie Howe’s men lost to Everton, Chelsea and Tottenham in the build-up to this clash at St James’ Park, where Chris Wood’s goal was enough to seal all three points.

The 30-year-old thought he had given the Magpies the lead in the first half as he bundled the ball into the net from close range after clever play from Miguel Almiron and Bruno Guimaraes. VAR then deemed the latter to be offside and the goal was subsequently disallowed.

The New Zealand international’s wait for a St James’ Park goal did not go on much longer, though, as he converted from the penalty spot in the second half. He was brought down in the box by Jose Sa and dusted himself down to score from 12 yards.

Despite the win, there were some worrying performances for the Toon, and one of them came from electric winger Allan Saint-Maximin.

Magpies reporter Ciaran Kelly dubbed it a “tough night” for the attacker and the statistics back that up as the 25-year-old struggled badly throughout the match.

Off the ball, the Frenchman was a liability for Newcastle. As per SofaScore, he lost a whopping 15 individual duels out of 22 contested, which shows that he was physically dominated by the opposition. He was unable to stand up to the Wolves defenders in one-on-ones and was lucky that Bruno Lage’s team did not make him pay for it.

Saint-Maximin also made zero clearances, tackles, interceptions or blocks, whilst being dribbled past twice. This suggests that he did not put in the required effort defensively to win the ball back for Howe’s side.

On the ball, he was also ineffective. As per SofaScore, he had 52 touches and attempted 11 dribbles but did not create a single chance as a result of his involvement in attacks. All three of his attempted crosses failed to find a team-mate and he ceded possession a staggering 23 times in his 95 minutes on the pitch.

Overall, the Frenchman was a passenger last night as he was unable to positively contribute in or out of possession for Howe. He was nowhere near his best and he has now gone eight games without a goal or assist to show for his efforts on the pitch, which highlights his struggles of late.

Everton made huge mistake with Tosun

Farhad Moshiri is renowned for his reckless spending after signing over 40 players in his six years in charge so far, with absolutely no return from his efforts as Everton are currently 16th in the Premier League teetering on the edge of a relegation battle.

The Toffees owner has spent over £600m trying to patch up the problems at Goodison Park, but has failed time and time again, which has also reflected in the managerial position at the club, with Frank Lampard becoming the sixth permanent manager in six years.

When it comes to current players who have not been worth the money spent on them, Cenk Tosun ranks highly as one of the biggest flops still at the club, and signing the Turkish centre forward is definitely one of Moshiri’s worst decisions to date.

Tosun was bought by the club for £27m in a move from Besiktas in 2018, and now over three years on, the player has failed to make any impact on the side worthy of price tag.

Offering just 61 appearances, 11 goals and six assists during that time, the £69k-p/w flop has seen his market value decrease rapidly and the 30-year-old is now worth 92% less than what the club paid, at £2.25m according to Transfermarkt.

On top of the striker’s lack of contribution over the years and the hefty price that Everton paid for it, he will now be eligible to leave on a free transfer after Everton failed to secure a January exit amid interest from his former club Besiktas, and he is now linked with a move to Al-Hilal.

This season, even with injuries to both Dominic Calvert Lewin and Richarlison on multiple occasions so far, Tosun has still failed to make more than one appearance in the Premier League, proving further that his services are not deemed as valuable to the club.

With all considered, Tosun must be made as a prime example to Moshiri moving forward when it comes to being more mindful when signing players, as the club is in no position to keep making the same mistakes, and fans will be hopeful that with Lampard’s influence the Toffees can move away from poor transfer planning and in future sign players that can be an asset to the club.

The Sydney Cricket Ground will continue to host Tests and one-dayers for the next five years but Twenty20 internationals could be held in the city’s larger ANZ Stadium, which hosted the 2000 Olympics. An agreement between Cricket Australia and Cricket New South Wales will ensure Tests and one-day internationals remain at the SCG for the next five years.Last November, the possibility was raised of the SCG losing out as a venue for the 2010-11 Ashes following a staging row between Cricket NSW and the SCG Trust.”The SCG is the home of cricket in Australia, one of the world’s two finest cricket grounds,” Rodney Cavalier, the SCG Trust chairman, said. “Test matches have been played at the SCG since 1882. That tradition will continue. The SCG is where the players want to play, where the cricket lover wants to come.”Ashes tickets go on sale to Australian Cricket Family members on Wednesday and will be on general sale from July 20.
