Sky Sports drop Nketiah update for West Ham

Speaking on Sky Sports (via Football Daily), journalist Dharmesh Sheth has dropped a major claim involving West Ham target Eddie Nketiah, confirming he will leave Arsenal this summer.

The Lowdown: West Ham join Nketiah race…

The Hammers are targeting Nketiah with the young forward’s future in north London a real point of discussion.

Reliable sources back West Ham’s interest in the Englishman, too, with transfer guru Fabrizio Romano recently namedropping them among the sides eyeing a move.

These links are further reinforced by club insider ExWHUemployee, who detailed the story on his Patreon whilst explaining that Nketiah’s club may well sell for the right price.

The Latest: Sheth drops live TV update on Sky…

Speaking on live TV, journalist Sheth has dropped a pretty significant Sky Sports update on Nketiah’s future.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-3/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, he says that the 22-year-old striker now seems all but certain to exit in this transfer window after talks over a new deal broke down.

“He will leave in this transfer window,” explained the reporter (via Football Daily).

“We understand Bayer Leverkusen and three Premier League clubs are interested.”

Furthermore, Romano revealed that West Ham are indeed still one of the teams keen on his signature in reply to this development (Twitter).

The Verdict: What West Ham need?

The Irons should be prioritising the signing of a proven, prolific goal scorer with plenty of first team football under his belt.

While Nketiah has enjoyed flashes of brilliance for both Arsenal and Leeds United (on loan), we believe the young forward shouldn’t become West Ham’s only striker signing this window, despite manager Mikel Arteta calling him ‘powerful’ last year (The Metro).

Nketiah started just four Premier League games at the Emirates Stadium over 2020/2021, scoring two goals in that time (WhoScored), and these numbers arguably don’t point to the answer for West Ham’s striking dilemma.

Villa cool Ward-Prowse interest

An update has emerged on Aston Villa’s pursuit of Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse…

What’s the talk?

According to the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa have decided to withdraw their interest in Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse. The English midfielder was reportedly a top target for Dean Smith and was said to be keen on a switch to Villa Park.

However, the Midlands club have now taken their name out of the hat and are seemingly pursuing other targets, with the report stating that Villa are keen on signing a number 10.

Smith will be furious

Villa boss Dean Smith will be furious with the board following this latest update. The club have clearly decided to stop tracking the midfielder and will now look at alternatives, which will come as a blow to Smith’s plans as the English coach identified Ward-Prowse as a key target.

It is easy to see why Smith would like him at Villa Park. Ward-Prowse averaged a phenomenal WhoScored rating of 7.07 in the Premier League for the Saints last season. The 26-year-old provided eight goals and seven assists from midfield, whilst also making 3.1 tackles and interceptions per game. This shows that he has an impact at both ends of the pitch and is able to maintain a consistently high standard of performances, which could make him a great asset for Villa.

Ward-Prowse was named Southampton’s Player of the Season earlier this year and his manager, Ralph Hasenhuttl, lavished praise on the “outstanding” midfield enforcer.

He told the Daily Echo:

“It’s not surprising for me, a player who played every minute this season is unbelievable.

“His physicality and his performances are outstanding. That’s our captain on the pitch and he is on the way that he is a very important player for this club for the long term, I think.”

The £75k-per-week maestro, therefore, has proven himself at Premier League level and shown that he can be consistent over the course of a season. This means that he would arrive at Villa as less of a gamble in comparison to a player potentially coming from abroad who has never experienced English football.

John McGinn was Villa’s highest-rated central midfielder on WhoScored last season. He achieved a score of 6.88, which is lower than the 7.07 Ward-Prowse managed

This suggests that the Southampton man would be a sizable improvement on Villa’s current options in the middle of the park, which is another reason why Smith will be livid that Villa were unable to get a deal done.

Surrey v Glamorgan – a statistical review

Before today, only four sides in the world had ever scored over 400 runs in an innings in a limited overs match

Before today, only four sides in the world had ever scored over 400 runs in an innings in a limited overs match. Today at The Oval, both Surrey and Glamorgan achieved this feat in a quite remarkable one day game in the C&G Trophy that saw a host of world records tumble in the London sunshine. The record breaking day began with Surrey racing to 438 for five in their 50overs – the highest ever total in one day cricket anywhere in the world, beatingthe 413 for four made by Somerset against Devon at Torquay in 1990. Theprevious highest involving two first-class counties was Surrey’s 375 for four against Yorkshire in their National League match at Scarborough in 1994.Ali Brown also created a world record with an innings of 268 – the highestever individual innings, which broke South African Graeme Pollock’s previousworld best of 222 not out for Eastern Province against Border at East Londonin 1974/75. Brown’s score was also the highest ever in the U.K. in a one daymatch, beating Alvin Kallicharran’s 206 against Oxfordshire at Edgbaston in1984, and the highest against a first-class county in a one-day game, whichhe himself had set in 1997 with 203 against Hampshire at Guildford. Brown isalso the only batsman in the world to have two double hundreds to his namein one-day cricket. The previous highest totals and scores against Glamorgan had been recordedin their 1975 Gillette Cup match against Hampshire at Southampton, when thehome team amassed 371 for four, with Gordon Greenidge scoring 177.Brown’s remarkable feat expunged these from the record books, but also addedanother, rather unwanted record, as Darren Thomas’s nine-over spell went for108 runs – the most ever conceded by a bowler anywhere in the world in amajor one day game. The previous most expensive figures were 12-0-107-2recorded by Cornwall’s Chris Lovell against Warwickshire at St. Austell in1996. The previous most expensive by a Glamorgan bowler were Malcolm Nash’sfigures of 12-1-84-2 against Hampshire in the 1975 Gillette Cup match atSouthampton.Another record to disappear from the 1975 Gillette Cup match at Southampton, was the highest opening partnership against Glamorgan in the competition. The previous best had been the 210 added by Hampshire’s openers BarryRichards and Gordon Greenidge, but Brown and Ian Ward sailed past this withan opening stand of 286. This was also the highest partnership for anywicket in one-day cricket against Glamorgan, beating the stand of 223 bySomerset’s Jimmy Cook and Graham Rose in the 1990 Sunday League match atNeath. However, one world record which remained intact was Ian Botham’s feat ofhitting 13 sixes against Northamptonshire at Wellingborough in 1986. Brownfell one short with 12, but it was still the highest ever against Glamorganbeating the eight hit by Botham for Somerset against Glamorgan at Taunton ina B&H fixture in 1986.Glamorgan then replied with 429 – their highest ever total in one-day cricket, beating the 373 for seven they scored against Bedfordshire at Cardiff in 1998. It was also their best ever batting second, passing the 314 for two they made against the British Universities at Cambridge in a Benson and Hedges Cup match in 1996.Acting captain Robert Croft led the way with a blistering 119, reaching hishundred off just 56 balls – the fastest ever in a one-day game for the Welshcounty, beating the 58 ball century notched up by Matthew Maynard againstthe British Universities at Cambridge in 1996 and his 60 ball hundredagainst Surrey at The Oval in the 1997 National League contest.Croft also struck 21 boundaries (18 fours and three sixes) in his career-best century – the most in an innings in a one-day contest for Glamorgan, beating the 19 struck by Jacques Kallis (17 fours and two sixes) against Surrey at Pontypridd in 1999.Despite the sterling efforts of the Glamorgan batsmen, Surrey were the victors by 9 runs in a game that saw the sides register the highest two totals ever made in a limited-overs game in the world. In all, 867 runs were scored on the day – breaking the world record in a one-day game set in India in 2000/01 when the game between India and India B produced 754 runs. The previous highest match aggregate in the U.K. was also recorded at TheOval, as the 1994 match between Surrey and Worcestershire produced no fewerthan 707 runs. The previous highest for a one-day match involving Glamorganwas 650 against Durham at Darlington in their NatWest Trophy game in 1991.

Simon Doull plying his trade in the Netherlands

A phone call out of the blue may yet see former New Zealand swing bowler Simon Doull on the first-class scene next summer

Lynn McConnell10-Jul-2002A phone call out of the blue may yet see former New Zealand swing bowler Simon Doull on the first-class scene next summer.Doull announced his retirement from cricket last season and seemed set for a distinctive career in the commentary box where his perceptive analysis of on-field events added to the quality of radio coverage of cricket last year. But sitting at his Tauranga home one Wednesday night a few weeks ago, savouring his hockey team having won the first round of their competition in their Waikato league, Doull answered a phone call from the Netherlands. The HCC club had lost newly-promoted TelstraClear Black Cap Paul Hitchcock after he sustained an injury during New Zealand’s one-day series against the West Indies, had come home for treatment, and they were looking for a replacement.Doull didn’t need too much convincing and was on the plane to the Netherlands at the weekend. And while taking time to settle into his playing and coaching role in the course of his eight-week contract, he showed some improving form in his most recent game on Sunday when bowling his 10 overs and taking three wickets for 40 runs. However, that wasn’t enough to prevent his side suffering a 115-run loss to VRA.Doull is reportedly undecided about whether he might play representative cricket again next summer but before his departure he had been thinking about his options, especially with a view to developing the batting which proved so effective in Northern Districts’ match against England at Hamilton.Among other New Zealanders playing overseas at the moment Craig Spearman has reached 582 first-class runs for Gloucestershire in the English County Championship, at an average of 36.37.Canterbury’s Peter Fulton achieved a significant bowling performance in his latest match for Lytham in the Liverpool league when taking seven for 46 against Worsley before scoring 86 not out in his side’s eight wicket win.In recent matches in the first division of the Liverpool league Neal Parlane has had scores of 103 and 76 for his Fleetwood Hesketh side while another Northern Districts player James Marshall scored 46 and took three for 24 for his Formby club against St Helens.
