West Indies name Samuels, Lawson for tour of India

Batsman Marlon Samuels and fast bowler Jermaine Lawson have been named in a 16-member West Indies squad for the upcoming tour of India that begins on October 2.

Derrick Nicholas10-Sep-2002Batsman Marlon Samuels and fast bowler Jermaine Lawson have been named in a 16-member West Indies squad for the upcoming tour of India that begins on October 2.Samuels, aged 22, made a return to cricket during Jamaica’s domestic season following a knee operation last February and was one of the leading batsmen for his native Jamaica in this year’s Red Stripe Bowl West Indies limited-overs competition.During the West Indies’ historic series against Pakistan in Sharjah, Samuels complained of pain in his left knee. After medical checks, it was revealed that a problem with the inner part of his knee bone had developed and he underwent surgery to correct it.It meant Samuels, one of the bright prospects for West Indies cricket, missed the series against Pakistan, as well as the home series against India and New Zealand.Meanwhile, Lawson was gradually building a reputation for himself. He was a member of the squad that visited Sri Lanka last November, but fell out of favour. He earned a place on the West Indies “A” Team’s tour of Britain and Canada, where he was one of the leading bowlers for the side.Tall and athletic, Lawson also played a major part in helping Jamaica reach the final of the Red Stripe Bowl before they were beaten by champions Barbados. The rest of the squad comprises most of the players that faced the Indians and New Zealanders during the 2002 Cable & Wireless Series earlier this year except one. Fast bowler Adam Sanford has not found favour with the selection panel this time.West Indies play three Tests at Mumbai (October 9 to 13), Chennai (October 17 to 21) and Kolkata (October 30 to November 3), as well as seven limited-overs internationals.Earlier this year, West Indies prevailed over the Indians 2-1 in the best-of-five Cable & Wireless Wireless Test Series, but went down 1-2 in the rain-affected five-match Cable & Wireless Trophy limited-overs international series. This will be West Indies’ ninth tour of India, where they have only lost once on the 1978-79 visit when Sunil Gavaskar’s side prevailed over Alvin Kallicharran’s tourists.Squad: Carl Hooper (captain), Gareth Breese, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Pedro Collins, Cameron Cuffy, Mervyn Dillon, Chris Gayle, Ryan Hinds, Wavell Hinds, Ridley Jacobs, Brian Lara, Jermaine Lawson, Mahendra Nagamootoo, Darren Powell, Marlon Samuels, Ramnaresh Sarwan.

Journalist hails Pedro Neto as Wolves’ "most exciting player"

“Wolves have a real player on their hands” – Journalist makes exciting Molineux claimPedro Neto is the most exciting player at Wolves, claims Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield.

The 21-year-old is currently being linked with a move away from Molineux, with 90min reporting that Liverpool, Tottenham and Juventus are all interested in him.

This comes after a season where Neto thoroughly impressed. In 31 Premier League appearances, the Portuguese winger conjured up 11 goal contributions, more than any other Wolves player (via WhoScored).

He also averaged 2.1 dribbles per game, leaving him just outside the division’s top 10 for that category, showing his ability to beat defenders.

Ultimately, for Hatfield, there probably is not a more entertaining player at Molineux in this moment of time.

“He’s arguably the most exciting player at the club,” the Wolves journalist told FFC. “If he’s the same player as he was before he got injured, then Wolves have a real player on their hands.”

Neto has been out of action since April after he picked up a serious knee injury. It is a blow for new manager Bruno Lage, who will probably have to wait a while before the Portugal international is fully fit and firing again.

If all goes well, though, the Wolves boss will indeed have quite the player on his hands.

Hookes angry at backing up for early one-dayer tomorrow

ADELAIDE, Oct 18 AAP – Victorian coach David Hookes believes it’s outrageous to play an early-starting limited overs match tomorrow, the day after Victoria lost a Pura Cup match to South Australia.

Sam Lienert18-Oct-2002ADELAIDE, Oct 18 AAP – Victorian coach David Hookes believes it’s outrageous to play an early-starting limited overs match tomorrow, the day after Victoria lost a Pura Cup match to South Australia.Hookes said the first-class game should have started a day earlier to allow players time to recover for their first ING Cup match of the season.”The hardest thing is for everybody to come out tomorrow,” Hookes said at Adelaide Oval today.”I think it’s just outrageous that the players’ association allows the players to play for four days and then come out at 9.30am the next day, it’s just ridiculous.”At the very least you’ve got to have a night game, or with no television on Pura Cup cricket why couldn’t this game have started on Monday? It’s just ridiculous to me.”Hookes said he understood that the game needed to fit in with the requirements of television. But he said the early start time could well assist whichever side bowled first and have a big bearing on the outcome.”It is unfortunate that the toss, particularly if it’s cloudy and overcast which it’s supposed to be tomorrow, may well determine the first hour of the game,” he said. But upbeat SA skipper Greg Blewett, who scored a century in the Pura Cup match, said his men would have no problems backing up.”I can’t wait, I’m really looking forward to it and I know the boys are too,” Blewett said.”It’s a good start to get off to in the Pura Cup, but importantly tomorrow we’ve got to back up again and make sure we get off to an equally good start there.”It’s always a bit tough with a 9.30am start, I’m not really a morning person so it’s always a bit tough on me.”But I don’t think the boys at this stage of the year will have problems backing up from today.”Batsman David Plumpton, and all-rounders Ian Hewett and Andrew McDonald come into the side for Victoria, while opener Jason Arnberger, injured paceman Michael Lewis and Will Carr have been left out of the side that played in the Pura Cup match. For SA, Graham Manou will take over the wicket-keeping duties from Shane Deitz and batsman Nathan Adcock replaces all-rounder Mike Smith, who has suffered a knee injury.Teams:SOUTH AUSTRALIA: Greg Blewett (capt), Ben Johnson, David Fitzgerald, Chris Davies, Nathan Adcock, Mark Higgs, Mick Miller, Graham Manou, Ryan Harris, John Davison, Paul Rofe, Mark Harrity.VICTORIA: Darren Berry (capt), Matthew Elliott, Ian Hewett, Ian Harvey, Shane Harwood, Brad Hodge, Mathew Inness, Nick Jewell, Andrew McDonald, David Plumpton, Graeme Rummans, Cameron White, Will Carr (13th man).

Três jogadores do Peñarol receberam a mesma suspensão preventiva: Nántez, Mier e Lucas Hernández.

Relieved Ponting ready for old recruits

Ricky Ponting didn’t mean to sound desperate, but at the end of the first Test he struggled to contain his thoughts on Michael Clarke and Matthew Hayden coming back

Ricky Ponting didn’t mean to sound desperate, but at the end of the Test, which was secured by some brilliant bowling from Stuart Clark, he struggled to contain his thoughts on Michael Clarke and Matthew Hayden coming back. Apart from Ponting and Andrew Symonds, who collected a double of 70 not out and 79, the top-order batting was a serious concern at Sabina Park, and the prospect of two main men returning excited Ponting.”Clarke will obviously come back in,” Ponting said before correcting himself slightly as the camera showed Clarke standing next to Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors and the man who makes those decisions. Hayden’s achilles has been improving and he planned to have a centre-wicket practice once the post-match presentation had cleared.”Hayden has been getting around a lot better over the last couple of days,” Ponting said. “Hopefully both those guys come up alright and we’ll get them back in the side sooner rather than later.”After two poor openings – Australia were 37 for 2 in the first innings and 18 for 5 on day four – Ponting needs his pillars on duty. West Indies are also hopeful of Chris Gayle and Jerome Taylor, two of their major weapons, being available in Antigua from Friday.Brad Hodge made useful contributions in both innings, but Clarke’s arrival in the West Indies from compassionate leave means the Victorian will probably be squeezed off the tour. If Hayden comes back, Simon Katich will also lose his spot in the team following his 12 and 1 at the top of the order. The look of the Australians after the match was more relief after Clark had captured 5 for 32 and West Indies had fallen for 191, giving the tourists a 95-run win. “We had our up-and-down moments right through the course of the game,” Ponting said. “The first couple of days we dominated, then West Indies did well to fight back late on day three, taking those four wickets. It got them back into the game.”Symonds’ innings yesterday was crucial for us, it got us back in front. Then Clark and Brett Lee led the way outstandingly well today. It turned out being a terrific Test.”Clark was superb and he and Lee, operating in partnership, made sure the game was sealed by lunch. “The wicket was good for bowling, a little up and down,” Clark said. “They were nice conditions, and it was my day here.”Ponting was also impressed by the performance of his leading fast men. “The way we went about it today, that was really Test cricket,” he said. “We didn’t give them any easy runs in the first session. The bowlers stuck to their jobs manfully, and that was the turning point in the game.”He saved special praise for Clark’s achievements since joining the Test team in 2006. “How could you not admire what he’s done,” Ponting told reporters after play. “He’s averaged 20 in 16 or so Test matches, and that’s a really great achievement, especially when he hasn’t bowled with the new ball on a lot of those occasions.”And we’re playing on a lot pitches like this, where you just have to go against what you do in Australia and find different ways of working batsmen over and getting them out. Whatever the situation required, you know that he’ll come in and get the job done for you. Whether it be a seaming pitch or something like the one in this match. He’ll give you what is expected and what the team requires.”
