An update has emerged on Stoke midfielder James McClean, regarding Bolton’s interest in his services. 

What’s the talk?

According to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, Bolton are considering a swoop for Stoke City utility man James McClean this month.

Nixon claims that Stoke are willing to send the Irishman out on loan, with Bolton and Wigan both eyeing him up as a potential signing.

Potters boss Michael O’Neill has confirmed that the winger is available for clubs to sign. He said:

“James is part of the U23s. He’s available to other clubs but as yet no club has taken up that option as far as I understand.”

Evatt would love him

Bolton must decide to take up Stoke’s offer and bring McClean in on a season-long loan, assuming the financial element of the deal is within the club’s budget. He is an experienced operator who could come in and add quality and know-how to the squad, which is why he could be an excellent signing.

In terms of his ability, he was able to showcase what he is capable of at times in the Championship last season. He averaged a solid WhoScored rating of 6.72 in 23 appearances, scoring two and assisting three. In the 2019/20 campaign, he averaged an exceptional WhoScored rating of 7.14 and was directly involved in 14 goals – seven goals and seven assists.

This suggests that he still has the talent to make an impact in the second tier, which is why he could be superb in League One as it is one step lower than where he has been playing. Therefore, he could arrive at Bolton and offer real quality on the ball to help push them further up the table.

Evatt could love having a player with his class in possession, but his attitude and work rate is also top drawer. Last year, O’Neill called McClean a ‘whole-hearted’ player, although he admitted that he still needs to learn the tactical side of the game. He said:

“James is such a willing, whole-hearted player, he just at times needs a little bit of guidance.

“But for me, he’s been excellent when you look at the number of goals he assisted and the number he’s scored as well.

“So there’s a lot of positive things in his play, but he maybe needs a bit of help tactically and that’s something we continue to work on.”

This shows that the £20k-per-week beast puts the work in and is willing to grind the hard yards for the team. Evatt would be buzzing to have a player who could make a difference in and out of possession, with his skill and his work rate.

With over 150 Premier League appearances and over 170 appearances in the Championship to his name, McClean could impart his wisdom onto the younger players at the club. He has the experience of playing at a higher level and his know-how could prove crucial in the long run.

تحدث أحمد عبد الرؤوف المدير الفني لفريق الكرة الأول بنادي المصري بالسلوم، عن مباراة الأهلي التي أقيمت مساء اليوم.

وكان الأهلي قد نجح في تحقيق الفوز على ضيفه المصري بالسلوم، بهدف دون رد في مباراة دور الـ32 ببطولة كأس مصر.

وقال عبد الرؤوف في تصريحات بالمؤتمر الصحفي عقب المباراة: “نحمد الله على الظهور بالمستوى الذي نريده ومنعنا الأهلي من اللعب في العمق”.

وأضاف: “الثنائي موسى وكاظم ظهرا بشكل جيد في الشوط الأول ولكن في الشوط الثاني الأهلي امتلك الكرة بشكل جيد”.

وأردف: “في الشوط الثاني الأهلي لعب في العمق وعلى قلب دفاع، الأهلي صنع 3 أو 4 فرص طوال المباراة وهذا نجاح لنا”.

وعاد ليؤكد: “لعبنا الشوط الأول بشخصية جيدة وكسبنا احترام الناس وأشكر كل اللاعبين والجهاز المعاون”.

واستكمل: “واجهنا فريقًا كبيرًا فكنا نحاول اللعب على موسى وكاظم وأدينا هذا بشكل جيد، واجهنا فريقًا إذا تركنا له مساحات سيصنع مشاكل كبيرة، وفي الشوط الثاني تركنا مساحات كثيرة جدًا وهذا صنع لنا أزمة”.

واستطرد: “لم نستغل التحولات في الشوط الثاني، كما أنه لم تتح لنا فرصة كبيرة بسبب عدم امتلاك الكرة”.

وواصل: “معظم لاعبي فريقي لديهم عروض من أندية في الدوري الممتاز وهم يستحقون ذلك”.

Celtic have agreed on a fee with Legia Warsaw for Josip Juranovic, according to Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas.

Juranovic, who stands at 5 foot 7, has only been with his current employers for just over 12 months.

He’s made 40 appearances for Warsaw during that time, winning the Ekstraklasa last season.

The 26-year-old has turned out as a right-midfielder in all six of his starts during the current campaign and is also capable of playing as a right-back and a centre-back.

Sky Sports reporter Thomas has been on top of Celtic’s pursuit of Juranovic in recent days and took to Twitter on Tuesday evening to provide an update.

He admitted that a £2.5m fee between the two clubs has been agreed on, with finer details of a move and personal terms now being discussed.

The Verdict: McKay onto a winner

It seems as if Dominic McKay is about to land a versatile player for Ange Postecoglou who turned out at Euro 2020 for just £2.5m.

On paper, it seems to be smart business, especially with Postecoglou wanting a right-back and a winger before the end of the window.

Juranovic can play in both of those positions, so you’d expect him to rival Anthony Ralston and possibly push for a place on the right-hand side of midfield in Postecoglou’s 4-2-3-1 system, should a move officially go through.

What’s the word?

The Irons are amongst the lowest-spenders in the Premier League so far, having only brought in one senior addition on loan – back-up goalkeeper Alphonse Areola from Paris Saint-Germain.

A new centre-back, playmaker and striker are all needed to bolster David Moyes’ threadbare playing squad but time is quickly running out.

However, talkSPORT host Jim White dropped an exciting claim live on air earlier this week that should provide plenty of encouragement, he said:

“This is where I understand where West Ham are at right now. How much is available to spend in the remainder of the window? [They have] between £40m and £45m available to spend.”

The popular radio station also suggested that the east London outfit would make at least one more signing before Tuesday night’s 11pm deadline.

A late flurry?

Whether Moyes finds the right players to splash the cash on remains to be seen but it should be exciting news for many around the London Stadium as some have been absolutely desperate to see new additions.

The Hammers are also competing in the Europa League this term, so strength in depth across the pitch will be crucial to their chances of success. They may well have picked up back-to-back wins to kickstart the season and sit atop the Premier League table but one or two injuries could serious curtail their progress.

For example, 31-year-old talisman Michail Antonio – who became the club’s record top-flight goalscorer on Monday – is still the Scot’s only senior striker.

He’s been troubled with plenty of injury problems in the past too, so the club cannot afford to risk that happening. As per WhoScored, the former Forest man has failed to start more than 24 league games in the last four seasons.

Fabian Balbuena is yet to be replaced in the backline, so there’s a chance Aaron Cresswell’s creative exploits from the left will be needed in the middle should injuries arise there, though it does seem like the Irons are closing in on the signing of Kurt Zouma from Chelsea.

There’s also a massive gap to fill in the attack, behind Antonio.

Jesse Lingard only joined on loan in January but ended the campaign as their second-highest rated player with nine goals and four assists, via WhoScored.

Hammers assistant Stuart Pearce confirmed their intentions to sign him permanently to talkSPORT last week but whether he leaves Manchester United remains a different story.

But all in all, this update from White, who is thought to be acquaintances with co-owner David Sullivan, is promising news. Moyes has the budget to spend, clearly.

We should expect to see an addition or two before next week, that’s for sure.
