A remarkable last-day effort by the bowlers gave Rajshahi an away victory against Sylhet and more importantly helped them edge Barisal, who could only draw against Chittagong, to the top of the chart. Dhaka kept pressure on the leaders with a resounding win at home over a depleted Khulna side.At the Sylhet District Stadium bowlers called all the shots and not a single half-century was hit in the four innings. Fast bowler Subashis Roy created havoc with bounce and seam movement as the visitors crumbled. Roy took 5 for 18 and his new-ball partner Rashedur Rahman took 3 for 52 as Rajshahi were skittled out for 117 before tea. Sylhet managed a slender lead after left-arm spinner Suhrawadi Shuvo (4 for 27) and fast bowler Mohammad Shahzada (3 for 30) restricted them to 172. The 55-run lead had looked handy though by the middle of day three as Rajshahi languished at 165 for 8. But the last three Shahzada, Alambir Kabir and Shafiul Islam pushed them past 250. Legspinner Monir Hossain took 5 for 72. Set 199 to win, Sylhet reached 77 for 2 at stumps on the third day but they slumped to 102 for 5 – losing three wickets inside three overs – the next day. Saqlain and Shafiul Islam picked up three wickets each as Sylhet were all out for 41 short of the target.Barisal’s match against Chittagong at Fatullah petered to a draw as neither side displayed enterprise to force a result. For Barisal, 19-year old opener Rony Talukder was the show-stopper on day one as he put on century stands with dominated the next two partnerships with Nasiruddin Faruque (49) and Imran Ahmed (32. He cut and pulled his way 176 off 224 and on his fall Tariqul Islam (55) took hold of the reins and Barisal finished with 385. Kamrul Islam and Tareq Aziz shared nine wickets between them. Chittagong’s openers gave them a confident start but Nasir Hossain and Islam triggered a collapse which reduced them to 179 for 5. No. 6 Faisal Hossain revived the innings with 127 and Chittagong declared on 392 for 9 on the final day. The draw was inevitable and Nasiruddin helped himself to a century as Barisal’s top order indulged in some batting practiceIn Mirpur Dhaka beat an ICL-depleted Khulna side by 176 runs. However their victory was not assured at the end of day one when despite half-centuries from Shamsur Rahman and Nadif Chowdhury, they got only 251 before declaring. There were hints of a mauling on day two when Khulna collapsed from 63 for 4 to 110 all out. Captain Tushar Imran scored 50 but struggled to launch a rescue effort as wickets tumbled around him. Left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny took 4 for 45 after which Chowdhury bettered his first-innings performance with a century in the second. Set an impossible target of 408, Khulna folded in 83.2 overs despite half-centuries from Imran and Nazmus Sadat. Elias Sunny was the pick of the bowlers this time with 4 for 44.There was more bad news for Khulna after fast bowler Robiul Islam was suspended for a match and fined 75% of his match fees for an altercation with Mahmudullah while batting on the last day. Mahmudullah was also fined for his involvement.Player of the Week: Though he is regarded as one of the most naturally talented cricketers around, Chowdhury had not managed to raise him game to match the first-class level. His 54 and unbeaten 101 against Khulna however was a match-winning effort and bore all the marks of the class batsman he is. Cricket fans are hoping this will be a catalyst for consistency.

Windass: Dan James to Leeds makes complete sense

Former Premier League striker Dean Windass believes that Dan James moving to Leeds makes complete sense.

The 23-year-old made the switch to Elland Road from Manchester United on deadline day, in a deal worth £25m.

James had started two of Manchester United’s opening three Premier League fixtures against both Leeds and Wolves last weekend, but after the arrivals of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo, it perhaps pushed James down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

During his time with Manchester United, James made 74 appearances in all competitions, scoring nine goals and assisting a further nine and has the ability to play off either wing.

Windass thinks James’ move to Leeds makes complete sense, telling Football FanCast: “Well it makes sense now because they signed Ronaldo. I think that’s just a replacement or you know in the situation where we all know Ronaldo can play anywhere along the frontline.

“Massive respect to Dan really, I think that obviously maybe he thought ‘I’m not going to play week in, week out when Ronaldo comes’ and he’s a Hull lad anyway, so he’s moving back towards Hull, he’s moving back this way.

“He’ll be back in Yorkshire and he’ll be a great addition to Leeds – I think you know obviously with the pace and the way Bielsa likes to play in a sense of tracking back, you’ve got to do the work without the ball not just with it and he’s got that all in his locker.”

James was Leeds’ fifth signing of the summer after Jack Harrison, Junior Firpo, Lewis Bate and Kristoffer Klaesson also joined the football club during the transfer window.

The pacey winger will provide competition amongst the Leeds ranks and manager Marcelo Bielsa will be delighted to have signed James at the second time of asking, as he was due to sign for the Whites a couple of years ago when he was at Swansea City, but the deal collapsed at the last minute.

Dennis let Munoz down for Watford v Wolves

Watford continued their poor run of form in the Premier League as they succumbed to a third straight defeat in the division on Saturday.

The Hornets lost 2-0 at home to Wolves, with Francisco Sierralta scoring an own goal to hand Bruno Lage’s side the lead before Hee-Chan Hwang prodded home from close range to seal the three points for the away side after a goalmouth scramble.

This followed on from the 2-0 defeat to Brighton and the 1-0 loss against Tottenham, with Watford failing to build on their opening day win over Aston Villa.

Despite Sierralta scoring an own goal, the Watford central defender was not the most disappointing player on the pitch for Xisco Munoz. Instead, the player with the lowest SofaScore rating (6.2) in the side was winger Emmanuel Dennis.

The summer signing, who scored on the opening day against Villa, struggled to show off his quality as he was deployed out wide on the left with Josh King operating as the central striker. He was found wanting at both ends of the pitch as he let Xisco down with his dreadful display.

Defensively and in transition, Dennis was poor. Per SofaScore, he lost 60% of his duels on the pitch – losing 12 battles in total. He also lost possession of the ball 18 times from 43 touches – giving it away every 2.38 touches – whilst also being dribbled past four times in the game.

This shows that he was too sloppy with the ball at his feet and not switched on enough defensively to stop players from getting past him. The fact that he allowed four players to dribble past him suggests that he was not set in the correct defensive position to either force them to pass the ball or to fail to get the other side of him.

Offensively, he was almost non-existent. Per SofaScore, he created zero chances for his teammates whilst failing with both of his attempted crosses. He was also unable to work any worthwhile openings for himself as he registered one shot in the entire match, which was off target.

Therefore, he let Munoz down with his performance as he was a liability defensively and offensively out on the left wing. He was not able to offer any quality going forward and his lack of defensive nous meant that he was hurting Watford’s performance by being on the pitch, which is why the head coach will surely be fuming with his display.

Eu falei: “Se acontecer, a casa é tua”.

Phil Hay: Leeds star catches Bielsa’s eye

Rodrigo’s attitude and quality in training are believed to have caught the eye of Marcelo Bielsa, according to reliable journalist Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Up-and-down Whites career

The 30-year-old became Leeds United’s record signing when he joined from Valencia last year, but he is yet to fully ignite at Elland Road.

Rodrigo has scored seven goals in 32 appearances – a record that should really be better, considering the reputation he had when he arrived.

He was hooked at half-time against Liverpool last weekend, but according to a fresh update, that doesn’t mean Bielsa is unhappy with him.

The Latest: Rodrigo impresses Bielsa

The Spaniard has impressed his manager in training, The Athletic‘s Hay claims, especially in terms of his professionalism and work ethic.

Rodrigo will hope to start Friday’s clash with Newcastle United at St James’ Park, as the Whites look for their first Premier League win of the season.

The Verdict: Persevere with him

Rodrigo is a hugely gifted footballer – former teammate Neto once hailed him as a ‘phenomenon’ – so he is certainly worth persevering with at Leeds.

Granted, he hasn’t yet excelled in a Whites shirt, but it will be interesting to see how he continues to develop in a No.10 role under Bielsa, considering that wasn’t his natural position when he arrived.

The fact that Rodrigo is seemingly knuckling down in training certainly bodes well and he may be eager to prove his worth at Newcastle, who have themselves struggled to start the new campaign.

In other news, one huge club are reportedly eyeing up a move for a Leeds player. Find out who it is here.

Utseya hopes team will prove critics wrong

Prosper Utseya, the Zimbabwe captain, has said his side will be under pressure to perform on the tour of Bangladesh in order to prove their place among the top teams.During their 16-day stay in Bangladesh, Zimbabwe will play a triangular series, also involving Sri Lanka, followed by a three-match ODI contest against the hosts. They begin their tour with a three-day game against Bangladesh’s Academy team, which starts on January 6.”We are currently out of the Test arena and, as we speak, I hear some people are saying we mustn’t even be playing ODIs,” Utseya told the . “This is distressing. We need to go there and show that we still belong here. Our aim is to reach the tri-series final and win the series against Bangladesh.”Zimbabwe have not played a Test since 2005, and lost 11 of their 12 ODIs – three were abandoned – in 2008. They recently lost a home series against Sri Lanka 5-0, although they did challenge a below-par opposition, and also suffered a defeat against Kenya. Their only win of the year was a 156-run victory over Ireland.”The pressure is on us against Bangladesh because we should be beating them,” Utseya said. “Previous Zimbabwe teams used to beat them quite easily. We recently lost 5-0 to Sri Lanka but against Bangladesh the pressure is different. We are sort of in the same league, Nos 9 and 10 on the ODI rankings, and when you play another lowly team there is always pressure to win.”Besides hosting Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe’s only other high-profile engagements last year were the Twenty20 tournament in Canada, a five-ODI series in Pakistan and a tri-nation tournament in Kenya. “The guys are excited to be touring again,” Utseya said. “We had a good Christmas break and satisfying training afterwards. We are all positive going into the tour.”During their last visit to Bangladesh, in 2006, Zimbabwe lost all five ODIs and a Twenty20 international. Bangladesh defeated them 3-1 in the ODIs on their return visit in 2007.
