Ponting expects Vaughan to return

Australia’s captain, Ricky Ponting, believes that England’s Ashes veterans, Michael Vaughan and Steve Harmison, will be back to face his team come the start of the series

Australia’s captain, Ricky Ponting, believes that England’s Ashes veterans, Michael Vaughan and Steve Harmison, will be back to face his team come the start of the series, despite the instant impact that Ravi Bopara and Graham Onions have made since they came into the side for the Lord’s Test last week.Neither Vaughan nor Harmison is in the set-up for the second Test against West Indies, starting at Chester-le-Street on Thursday, and with no more five-day cricket before Australia arrive at Cardiff on July 8, time is running out for them to prove their worth. But Ponting, speaking to Fox Sports, said: “I’ve just got a bit of a feeling that they might want to get Vaughan back into the set-up and they might pick Harmison for when we get there. So I think their side might actually shape up closer to the side of 2005 or 2007 than we actually think it might.”Vaughan’s No. 3 slot is currently occupied by Bopara, whose 143 in the first Test was the decisive innings of the match. “Bopara made a really good hundred against the West Indies last week, but their batting is fairly similar with Pietersen, Collingwood, Strauss, Cook, those guys,” he said. “We’ve played a lot against those guys over the years, so it’s not too dissimilar, both sides have probably got three or four changes from last time we met.”As for Onions, who took 5 for 38 at Lord’s, Ponting remained to be convinced of his long-term role. “He’s a lively bowler, and he did well in that game but I’m not sure when they get the Sidebottoms and all those guys back if he’ll still be in their side, but we’ll wait and see.”Asked about Vaughan’s prospects of an Ashes recall, England’s captain Andrew Strauss responded: “There’s a chance, there’s definitely a chance. “There’s a lot of cricket to be played between now and the Ashes, and we all know what Vaughany brings in terms of runs and experience. But the ball is in the hands of the players who are in the side right at the moment.”

-Apto, estou. Estou à disposição do professor esperando o que ele vai montar. Se eu for escalado, vou estar preparado.

Gold drops worrying Spurs injury claim

Tottenham Hotspur supporters will be less than impressed by the latest update surrounding young winger Ryan Sessegnon…

What’s the latest?

The 21-year-old dynamo, who can play anywhere along the left flank, has been injured for most of the 2021/22 campaign and has been restricted to just two appearances in the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers.

Lilywhites boss Nuno Santo was positive about his chances of making a return in the near future ahead of Thursday night’s clash with Vitesse, but according to football.london reporter Alasdair Gold, that may not be the case at all.

“Nuno appeared to be optimistic yesterday about Ryan Sessegnon’s injury return in his press conference but his in-house chat with Spurs’ own media channels seems less so and that he might not be back soon,” the journalist tweeted.

Another setback

Sessegnon enjoyed an encouraging loan spell at Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim last season, where he got plenty of minutes under his belt as a left wing-back. He even scored twice and provided three assists, as per Transfermarkt.

There would have been hope for him to break through into the Spurs senior side once again, particularly with the change of manager as Nuno replaced Jose Mourinho and was tasked with the development of the club’s young stars.

He picked up a hamstring injury during pre-season, though it is rather telling that another loan spell was not sanctioned, so evidently he was someone the Portuguese had in mind for the season.

After returning to the side for their qualification matches in Europe, the 2019 summer signing picked up another problem whilst on international duty for England U21s recently.

“They are getting better. Unfortunately, they cannot join the group yet, but it’s a matter of time before we have good news,” is how Nuno described the situation but as per Gold, that isn’t as positive an update as you may think.

It has certainly left much of the Hotspur faithful rather frustrated, as seen by the replies to the journalist’s tweet.

“Got to be one of the most disappointing transfers we’ve had over the last few years,” claimed one supporter, whilst another pondered “Is he ever going to be fit?” before adding: “think we need to cut ties with him imo he’s never going to get in the first team with the constant injuries.”

“Need to sell him IMO. Made of glass. Can’t remember a single good performance from him. Always injured,” slammed a further supporter. These were just a few of many similar responses in reaction to this latest development. As you can see, many are rather angry.

After joining in a £25m deal from Fulham, it’s easy to see why so many fans are fuming by the news. Sessegnon will certainly find it hard to break into the team anytime soon, as a result.

“AND in other news, Paratici could land Nuno’s next Neves in Spurs swoop for £18.9m-rated “special player”…

Man City fans fume over Riyad Mahrez blow

Flocking to Twitter, lots of Manchester City fans have fumed over a blow involving star winger Riyad Mahrez, with manager Pep Guardiola set for a mid-season conundrum.

The Algerian has been scintillating in front of goal so far this season, currently topping City’s charts as their top scorer in all competitions despite only starting two Premier League matches (WhoScored).

This is made all the more impressive due to Mahrez now competing with Gabriel Jesus for a place on the right-hand side of the Premier League champions’ attack, with the Brazilian striker impressing in his new role under Guardiola.

Regardless of the competition with Jesus for a starting berth, the African superstar has maintained his brilliant form from last campaign when given the opportunity, but City may have to contend without him for a long time in January.

As per Manchester Evening News, due to his Africa Cup of Nations duties, Mahrez is ‘set to miss up to six weeks of action’ for City when he joins up with Algeria for the tournament in January.

Flocking to this news, it’s safe to say that many Sky Blues believe this length of time could be a problem. Check out some of their verdicts from Twitter below.

Noffke overcomes skin cancer scare

Ashley Noffke has reason to be thankful for the hip injury that dashed his hopes of pushing for a place in Australia’s Ashes squad as it revealed the Queensland allrounder was suffering from skin cancer

Ashley Noffke has reason to be thankful for the hip injury that dashed his hopes of pushing for a place in Australia’s Ashes squad as it revealed the Queensland allrounder was suffering from skin cancer. As Noffke was laid up during the domestic season in Australia a mole was found behind his knee that was diagnosed as a malignant melanoma. He immediately had it removed and made a full recovery in time to take up his deal with Worcestershire, but needs to remain alert for any reoccurrence.”It was pretty scary at the time,” Noffke told Cricinfo. “I was spending some time off the park when we found it so there is always a double-edged side to any misfortune, and it’s definitely a positive that we found that. I had it cut away straight away and now I’ve got to keep an eye on things to make sure nothing comes back.”If I had come here without having it treated the recovery process would have been a lot longer and I could have had long-running problems, but hopefully because we caught it early the worst is behind me now.”Noffke was restricted to five Sheffield Shield matches due to his injury problems but was still able to collect 18 wickets at 23.00 and feels that he could have pushed for an Ashes berth with a full season behind him.”Before my hip injury I was bowling as well as anyone in the country and I would have definitely given myself a chance,” he said. “It’s whether I’d have produced enough wickets and runs at the time for the selectors to back me in that. But it didn’t happen. I got injured so I guess that’s the way it is.”Now at Worcestershire, Noffke has positioned himself ideally should the Australia squad suffer injuries during the ICC World Twenty20 and the Ashes. Noffke, though, insisted his immediate goal was to string some matches together.”Obviously being in England during an Ashes tour is ideal because those things [injuries] have happened before but it wasn’t big in my decision making,” he said. “I’ve missed a lot of cricket at home and I needed to get over here and play for Worcestershire to get back into the swing of things and I’m still in the process of that.”After being overlooked for Australia’s tour of India last year, Noffke hit out at the selection panel after feeling he hadn’t been given a fair chance to prove his worth following two stand-out seasons for Queensland. His mood now appears to have mellowed and he admits the rough side of selection is something a player has to accept.”Selection is just part and parcel of professional sport and you can’t hang your hat on everything that happens,” he said. “It’s just a case of moving forward and waiting for any decisions that are made. I think as a player you always have to believe you are good enough to play at the level. I was lucky enough to have two really good seasons back-to-back for Queensland and I did get the chance to play for Australia at certain times.”

Dennis Adeniran must start for Sheffield Wednesday vs Cheltenham

With an away trip to face Cheltenham Town at the weekend on the horizon, Sheffield Wednesday are on a rather uninspiring run of form having drawn their three previous League One outings.

On the chalkboard

Looking ahead to the match at The Jonny-Rocks Stadium, one Owls player that should definitely be in the starting XI on Saturday is 22-year-old midfielder Dennis Adeniran.

Adeniran, who played the full 90 minutes of their 1-1 draw against Lincoln City last weekend, managed to not only score the goal that rescued a point for Darren Moore’s side.

He also managed to complete 26 of the 28 passes (92.9%) he attempted, made one accurate cross, completed two out of the four dribble attempts he made, won ten out of the 18 duels he was involved in and made four interceptions and four tackles, ultimately earning himself a solid overall match rating of 7.5, making him the joint-highest rated Wednesday player on the day according to SofaScore.

This shows just how much of a well-rounded performance he put in for the side in his latest appearance and why we think he should keep his place in the team for the trip to Cheltenham on Saturday.

Also, with Moore claiming that Adeniran would bring “great energy” to the team when they signed him, it seems as though he was right on the money considering how much of an attacking and defensive unit he was for Wednesday against the Imps.

Wednesday signed Adeniran back in July from Everton’s U23 side on a free transfer. Since then, the 22-year-old, who is currently valued at £360k according to Transfermarkt, has made 14 appearances for the Owls across all competitions in which he has managed to rack up three goals and one assist whilst playing in a range of positions on the pitch, highlighting his versatility and why we think he has been a good signing for the club.

For this weekend’s encounter, Adeniran’s inclusion in the starting XI would give Moore’s side to pick up a win rather than yet another draw or even a defeat that could put a dent in Wednesday’s hopes to secure a promotion place back to the Championship by the end of the season.

In other news: Moore must unleash “phenomenal” £1.62m-rated SWFC beast, he could bully Cheltenham – opinion
