McGrath wants Johnson to keep things simple

Glenn McGrath has said that Mitchell Johnson’s failure in the first two Ashes Tests was due to “mental issues rather than technical ones”

Glenn McGrath, the former Australian fast bowler, has said that Mitchell Johnson’s failure in the first two Ashes Tests was due to “mental issues rather than technical ones” and wants the bowler to keep things simple for the remainder of the series.”A lot of people will be giving Mitch all kinds of technical advice, saying his bowling arm is too low when delivering the ball or his wrist position is wrong, but in my experience, these losses of form are nearly always mental issues, rather than technical ones,” McGrath told .”He had a bit of a lay-off before the Australians came over here, and you cannot always just pick up from where you left off.”Johnson came into the Ashes as Australia’s spearhead but was inaccurate and expensive during the first two Tests and, although he picked up eight wickets, he was unable to build any sort of pressure on England’s batsmen.McGrath, however, felt that Johnson had not lost the skills that made him so successful in South Africa. “What I would say to Mitch is that he hasn’t lost any of the ability that makes him one of the most talented all-round cricketers in the world,” McGrath said. “Look at the ball he bowled to dismiss Matt Prior in England’s first innings. It was almost perfect: his fingers were in the right position on the seam, and the swing he found was excellent.”If Mitch can sort out the mental side of things, I’m convinced everything else would fall into place. Cricketers around the world would kill to have half of his potential.”Johnson is not bereft of advice in England. Brett Lee, the only Australian bowler with Test experience in England, has been talking to him about his form, as are the others. “Everyone’s been chatting to him and offering their advice. I’ve been offering my advice,” Lee, who missed the first two Tests because of injury, said. “Mitch is running ideas around. Everyone’s in it together. He’s obviously searching for a lot more wickets, but it’s not a matter of everyone being panicked and stressed out, saying what’s going on.”The key word over here is patience,” Lee said. “Playing in Australia and South Africa, it’s more conducive to fast bowling, particularly in South Africa. It’s just so important when you’re on wickets that are benign and aren’t conducive to fast bowling, you’ve got to find a way to get around that. In 2001 that’s the big thing I learnt. You can’t try and blast batsmen out.”Help, if wanted, was also forthcoming from Wasim Akram, the former Pakistan fast bowler based in Manchester, who felt that Johnson could sacrifice swing for accuracy early in his spells.”If you don’t have a straight arm it’s very difficult to get wickets in England because everything is swinging away from the right-hander and going down the leg side to the left-hander,” Akram told the .”He should stick to his natural strength as a left-armer and when he gets his rhythm, then he should try different things … I have been through this patch, Glenn McGrath has been through this patch. It’s very simple, just get his arm straight in the nets and he will come back to it.”

Everton need to watch out for Gabriel Jesus

Everton will be hoping to end a four-game winless run when the Premier League resumes this weekend, but they’re set to face a tricky test in the shape of reigning champions Manchester City.

Rafa Benitez’s charges have already experienced a season of two halves in the opening weeks of 2021/22, losing just one of their opening seven top-flight fixtures before picking up a single point from a possible 12.

A draw against Tottenham Hotspur last time out halted a streak of three consecutive losses, but a much-needed win will be hard to come by when they visit the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The two sides faced off three times in all competitions last season after they were pitted against each other in the FA Cup, with the Citizens comfortably winning all three encounters with an aggregate score of 10-1.

One player who started every game in the one-sided trilogy was Gabriel Jesus, and the £90,000-per-week beast played a pivotal part in the Manchester side’s success, grabbing a goal and an assist against the Toffees.

His 14th-minute strike in the 5-0 thrashing in the last game of the season extended his impressive record against Everton, taking his tally to eight strikes in nine appearances when lining up to take on the Blues.

For context, only 12 players have scored more against the Toffees than Jesus in the entire club’s history.

With City’s plethora of attacking options cutting opposition’s defences open at will this term, Benitez faces a near-impossible task of keeping the likes of Phil Foden, Kevin de Bruyne and Bernardo Silva at bay, but perhaps it’s Jesus who he should be most concerned about.

This season, the 24-year-old has almost been exclusively used out wide rather than in his typical centre-forward position, making him more elusive and harder to mark.

Jesus’ unwavering work ethic also makes him a nightmare for full-backs and opponents looking to push forward, an attribute that Pep Guardiola holds in high regard.

“He is exceptional and he has a key role for us for many years and been a big part of the huge success we’ve had every season,” the Spanish tactician remarked.

“Sergio was injured and played a few games last season. Always when Sergio was fit he was an important part of the team. He was incredibly recognised by me.

“He was a proper striker and Gabriel is a proper striker.

Football has a quirky habit of repeating itself and producing patterns over a number of years, and Everton are going to have to be on their best form to prevent Jesus from becoming their new nemesis.

Heavy one-day load for Flintoff after Ashes

Though Flintoff has played the Ashes with a dodgy knee, Geoff Miller, the chairman of selectors, said the board was keen to have him play as many one-dayers as possible

Andrew Flintoff, who will be retiring from Test cricket after the deciding Ashes game at The Oval, will have only two days rest at the end of the series before heading to Belfast for a one-day game against Ireland. Flintoff may have played the Ashes with a dodgy knee but Geoff Miller, the chairman of selectors, said the board was keen to have him play as many one-dayers as possible. The rest of the summer is hectic for England with two Twenty20 internationals and seven ODIs against Australia, one ODI against Ireland and the Champions Trophy later in September. Flintoff is part of all the one-day and Twenty20 squads.”I hope there is no wishful thinking,” Miller said. “He is retiring from Test cricket so his focus is going to be on one-day cricket and we’re hoping he will play as many as possible because that’s what he has designated himself for.”We’re trying to build a squad and a side so that people are comfortable about where they play. We know what Andrew is capable of and he knows what he’s capable of. If we have to monitor Andrew day by day we will do that. But at the moment he’s in our squad and an integral part of our side.”Flintoff has struggled with injuries through his career, having undergone four ankle operations and a knee surgery. Earlier this summer, he decided to retire from Tests to prolong his career.

Tottenham could move for Nicolo Zaniolo

Tottenham Hotspur may swoop for AS Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo in next summer’s transfer window, according to Calciomercato.

The lowdown

The attacking midfielder was heavily involved for Roma at the start of the season but has not started either of their last two matches (via Transfermarkt), while there was apparently some light ‘bickering’ with his manager, former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, in training last week.

Zaniolo is yet to register a goal or an assist this season but he is certainly a highly-rated talent. Roma legend Daniele de Rossi marvelled at the 22-year-old’s ‘incredible natural physique’ and backed him to become ‘a great player’.

According to FBRef, he boasts a similar statistical profile to Wolves’ Adama Traore, Brighton’s Leandro Trossard and in particular Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha.

The latest

With Zaniolo an unused substitute for Roma’s 2-0 victory over Genoa on Sunday, alarm bells are ringing and his future is in doubt.

As per Calciomercato, there have apparently been ‘several’ approaches already, ‘especially’ from Juventus.

The report noted that Zaniolo’s contract runs until 2024 and revealed that he’s currently valued at around €40m, equating to £33.5m. That’s a sum which could well ‘intrigue’ Tottenham.

The verdict

What made Mourinho’s snub all the more significant was that he turned to 18-year-old Felix Afena Gyan rather than Zaniolo when assessing his options. In fairness, the teenager did go on to score two goals, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a damning decision without the benefit of hindsight.

He continues to pose a threat in the final third, averaging 2.2 shots and 2.2 successful dribbles per game in Serie A. Those returns would put him third and second in Tottenham’s squad respectively, highlighting how transformative he could be to their attack.

Indeed, now might actually be a good time to invest in Serie A’s one-time Young Player of the Year. He might not be on top form, but he has just returned from a serious injury and he may soon remind the footballing world of his abilities, considerably increasing his price tag in the process.

Herath no more just support for Murali – Sangakkara

Kumar Sangakkara has said despite the 2-0 series win, the hosts were yet to reach their peak

Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lanka captain, has said the century stand between Daniel Vettori and Jacob Oram on the final day gave the home team a few scares and insisted that despite the 2-0 series win, the hosts were yet to reach their peak.Sri Lanka set New Zealand 494 to chase and began day five needing four wickets to win. However Oram and Vettori added 124 – the visitors’ highest partnership of the series – and at end of their stand New Zealand needed another 194 to win. Vettori added 97 more with the tail before they were bowled out. “[At 182 for 6] you expect to go out there and do better than probably we did, but we slacked off a bit in our fielding and maybe we didn’t bowl the right areas,” Sangakkara said. “It was good to walk away with a win but there are lots of areas to improve.”Danny and Jacob batted really well. It was quite possible they could have really got close. We were also bowling our overs very quickly and we had to keep an eye on that and try and slow down that as well. Other than that we put enough pressure on them to get the wickets. Once Jacob got out it was going to be a matter of time but as long as Jacob and Danny were there it was going to be an interesting game.”Sangakkara praised Vettori’s efforts with the bat and ball but said he needed more support from the other bowlers. “Muralitharan had Vaasy [Chaminda Vaas] to support him throughout. Danny needs to find someone like that to keep supporting him on all conditions. The way he’s gone about his business, the way he’s improved his batting over the last 12 months, he’s just a fantastic player.”Sangakkara also praised the injured Mendis’ replacement, Rangana Herath, who took career-best match figures of 8 for 209. “Rangana came as a support bowler for Murali but in the previous Tests [against Pakistan] and in this Test he turned out to be our No. 1 spinner,” Sangakkara said. “We are indebted to Rangana for the responsibilities he took on himself and the way he played a part in our victory.”Sangakkara hoped Murali would recover quickly from the minor groin strain he suffered while bowling during the final day of the New Zealand second innings and be fit for the one-day tri-series which also features India. He also looked ahead to Sri Lanka’s tour of India later this year and said the team was keen to challenge itself and win its first Test in the country.”The Indian tour will test everyone mentally and physically and skill wise. If we do our homework right, be confident, prepare as best as we can and go out there looking to win and if our attitude is positive we will do well.”
