David Warner has been left out of New South Wales’ squad for their opening Sheffield Shield game of the season after Phil Jaques and Usman Khawaja were preferred to face Western Australia from Tuesday. Warner, Australia’s Twenty20 opener, made his first-class debut in the final game of last summer, but appears to have a lengthy wait for a second outing considering the Blues’ batting strength.Jaques returns from a back injury, Brad Haddin is also available following finger surgery and Khawaja is wanting to build on a campaign of 554 runs at 42.61 last season. It is expected the queue for Warner will grow longer when Shane Watson returns from India and slots into the middle order for his new state. The wrist spinner Beau Casson is in line to partner the leggie Steve Smith in the four-day game while Stuart Clark will lead the bowling attack at the SCG.On Sunday New South Wales will welcome back Haddin and Jaques when they take on the Warriors in the FR Cup at North Sydney. Haddin has been out of action since the end of the Ashes series and didn’t feel ready to replace Tim Paine when he broke a finger in India on Wednesday. Jaques is one of four potential openers in the 12-man squad, along with Phillip Hughes, Warner and Simon Katich.Western Australia have recalled the batsman Liam Davis for both the FR Cup game and the Sheffield Shield match. The Warriors have won and lost in the FR Cup and gave up first-innings points to Queensland in their opening Sheffield Shield encounter. On Thursday they named a 13-man squad for the four-day fixture with the legspinner Josh Mangan added to the outfit.New South Wales FR Cup squad Phillip Hughes, Phil Jaques, David Warner, Simon Katich (capt), Dominic Thornely, Brad Haddin (wk), Ben Rohrer, Steven Smith, Steve O’Keefe, Stuart Clark, Mitch Starc, Burt Cockley.Western Australia FR Cup squad Wes Robinson, Luke Towers, Marcus North (capt), David Bandy, Liam Davis, Theo Doropoulos, Luke Ronchi (wk), Ashley Noffke, Jake Fawcett, Brett Dorey, Michael Hogan, Brad Knowles.New South Wales Shield squad Phillip Hughes, Phil Jaques, Simon Katich (capt), Dominic Thornely, Brad Haddin (wk), Ben Rohrer, Usman Khawaja, Steven Smith, Beau Casson, Stuart Clark, Mitch Starc, Burt Cockley.Western Australia Shield squad Wes Robinson, Luke Towers, Marcus North (capt), David Bandy, Liam Davis, Theo Doropoulos, Luke Ronchi (wk), Ashley Noffke, Steve Magoffin, Josh Mangan, Brett Dorey, Brad Knowles, Michael Hogan.

Neste momento, a pontuação mínima seria 63 pontos.

Vamos jogo a jogo.

2014 – Corinthians – 69 pontos
2013 – Botafogo – 61 pontos
2012 – São Paulo – 66 pontos
2011 – Flamengo – 61pontos
2010 – Grêmio – 63 pontos
2009 – Cruzeiro – 62 pontos
2008 – Palmeiras – 65 pontos
2007 – Fluminense – 61 pontos
2006 – Santos – 64 pontos

Ponting underwhelmed by Clarke 'over-rated' claims

In the Australian team Michael Clarke is viewed as a reliable vice-captain and the most consistent batsman in the team, but the outlook from over the fence is less glowing if a News Ltd survey can be believed

In the Australian team Michael Clarke is viewed as a reliable vice-captain and the most consistent batsman in the team, but the outlook from over the fence is less glowing if a News Ltd survey can be believed. Clarke is the country’s most over-rated cricketer according to the results, a claim which was immediately dismissed by a confused Ricky Ponting.”No one can doubt his cricket ability,” Ponting said of his deputy. “He’s a highly talented player who has played as well as most other players around the world in the last couple of years. As far as Michael being over-rated, that’s a bit harsh.”Only 14% of the respondents chose Clarke as the most over-hyped, but he was still ahead of Shane Watson (11%) and Shaun Tait (10%). Ponting said the public perception of his men was often misplaced and that surveys returned results that “don’t make a load of sense”.”To tell the truth, I’m not sure the public know a lot of us that well,” he said. “It’s very hard what we do, being probably reasonably public images out on the field playing and training all the time, but as I’ve always explained it, it’s a helmet on, helmet off sort of scenario. Everyone sees you with your helmet on and how you play your cricket, and makes judgments on how you are on the field. Quite often it can be a fair way away from the way you are off the field.”Ponting said the focus was something a lot of international sportsmen struggled with, but he felt his players in their “everyday people” roles did their best to combine promoting the game with doing the right thing by themselves. Clarke is on billboards selling energy drinks, on television advertisements catching tennis balls in his undies, in the celebrity pages with his model fiancée, and a high-profile part of Cricket Australia’s campaigns. In between all his off-field duties this year he has guided Australia’s batting through the unsuccessful Ashes campaign, scoring 448 runs at 64, and been promoted to lead the country’s Twenty20 side following Ponting’s retirement. “I’m 28 so a lot of the guys can relate to me,” Clarke said during the week.Ponting also defended Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, with 73% of people in the survey voting he should be sacked. Hilditch and his panel have been under fire for the past year for the side’s results in India, Australia and England, and the criticism reached its peak after the Ashes loss at The Oval, where no spinner was chosen on a turning surface.”I don’t think the selectors have done too much wrong in the last two years,” Ponting said. “Quite often when you’re in those sorts of positions you’re on a hiding to nothing. You try and do everything right by Australian cricket with the way you look at the team and pick the team and you still have people calling for your head.”

Everton: Benitez must unleash Simms

Everton are on a dire run of form and Rafa Benitez has been not been dealt any favours when it comes to injuries at Goodison Park.

According to The Athletic, Richarlison is set to be out for a number of weeks with a calf tear after he was substituted in the second half of the defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The Toffees have lost seven of their last nine Premier League matches, having won just five of their 16 matches in the division this season.

Revival

They are in desperate need of something to kickstart their revival under the Spaniard and Richarlison’s injury could open up the door for the spark they need to come in. Ellis Simms could be called up from the academy to come in and make his senior bow.

The 20-year-old is yet to make his first-team debut for Everton but his record in the youth teams and out on loan suggests that he has the potential to be a difference-maker for the Blues.

He scored 10 goals and provided two assists in 24 League One games for Blackpool last term and has scored 55 goals for the Toffees across the U18’s and U23’s, meaning he has 65 career strikes to his name at senior and youth level combined.

In the 2018/19 campaign, he scored a sensational 32 goals in 21 under-18 Premier League matches – scoring 41 times in 44 games at that age bracket overall. Since moving up to the 23’s, he has scored 17 in 37 outings – with his loan spell with the Tangerines coming last season.

Everton U23s Assistant John Ebbrell previously heaped praise on the young attacker, saying:

“What I do know with Ellis, if he ends up one-vs-one with the goalkeeper, he’s scoring.

“From experience, I know if you have time to think for that finish it can be difficult but Ellis is really calm and composed in those situations. He very rarely misses.”

His goalscoring statistics and Ebbrell’s comments on his finishing suggest that he could be able to make the grade in the first-team if he is given a chance by Benitez in the coming weeks. Richarlison’s injury could be the perfect opportunity to throw him in at the deep end to see if he is able to swim or not.

If Simms is able to come in and score goals at Premier League level then it could kickstart Everton’s revival and see them begin to move up to the part of the table where they want to be, rather than struggling in the bottom half.

Battle of the unpredictable begins

Cricinfo previews the first Test between Australia and Pakistan at the MCG

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale 25-Dec-2009

Danish Kaneria is a doubtful starter after injuring his finger•Getty Images

Match factsDecember 26-30, 2009
Start time 10.30am (23.30 GMT)Big PictureIt’s hard to know what to expect from a contest between the team that hasplayed the most Tests over the past two years and the side that has playedthe fewest. Australia’s hectic schedule means they’ve played 27 Tests sincethis time in 2007, while Pakistan’s home circumstances have limited them toeight Tests in the same period. Australia are coming off a 2-0, thoughtightly-fought, series against West Indies. Pakistan have just drawn 1-1in New Zealand. In years gone you could confidently predict not just an Australian win,but a rout, so dominant have they been against Pakistan since the mid-90s.But this is a different Australia side and as the series against WestIndies proved, one closer back to the pack than ever before. This Pakistanside retains the essence of all Pakistan sides and thus capable ofanything. What can be expected for sure is some high quality pace bowling. After adecade of batting riches, cricket suddenly finds itself with good fastbowlers floating around and few are more exciting than the ones Australiaand Pakistan have; between them, Doug Bollinger, Peter Siddle, MitchellJohnson, Mohammad Aamer, Mohammmad Asif and Umar Gul are likely todetermine the fate of the series. If Pakistan feel they have the better spinners in Danish Kaneria and SaeedAjmal, Australia will be more than confident that their batting is by farthe stronger. But if all goes well, it could be the most closely-foughtseries between the two sides since the 1994-95 tussle in Pakistan.Form guide (last five Tests, most recent first)Australia – WDWLW
Pakistan – DWLDL
Watch out forDoug Bollinger: He has become Australia’s newest cult bowling hero. Heentertains his team-mates with his antics, thrills the fans with hiswholeheartedness and good humour, and worries the opposition with his pace, swing and consistency. Chris Gayle made no secret of the fact that he feltBollinger was the most dangerous of Australia’s fast men during the recentTest series and Bollinger will be desperate to ensure his place in theattack becomes permanent.Three hundreds on an impressive Pakistan A tour to Australia in Julybrought Umar Akmal into the national side and he hasn’t stoppedscoring since; he already has two international hundreds and a spate offifties. He was hugely impressive in his maiden Test tour against NewZealand and his clear-headed aggression and a steady technique should winhim more fans here.Team newsAll the talk in the lead-up to the Test has surrounded Ricky Ponting’sfitness after suffering elbow tendon damage in the third Test against WestIndies. He trained well on Thursday and Friday and is more than likely totake his place in the side come Boxing Day. On the off chance he is ruledout, Phillip Hughes will come in. Siddle also looks set to return inplace of fellow Victorian Clint McKay after sitting out the WACA Testagainst West Indies with a hamstring strain. Siddle bowled withouttrouble in a state one-day match on Wednesday. A long-standing groinproblem for Nathan Hauritz has opened the doors for young legspinner SteveSmith, but Australia will give Hauritz time till the morning of the Testbefore making a final call.Australia (probable) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Simon Katich, 3 Ricky Ponting(capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Michael Clarke, 6 Marcus North, 7 Brad Haddin(wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Nathan Hauritz/Steve Smith, 10 Peter Siddle, 11 DougBollinger.Pakistan have no such injury concerns though a niggle to the fourth fingeron Danish Kaneria’s spinning hand is being looked at. There is talk in thecamp of playing an extra spinner in place of a fast bowler, but that willdepend on the surface and a decision is expected later. Pakistan will notreadily dismantle the pace trio that served them so well in New Zealand.Pakistan (probable) 1 Salman Butt, 2 Imran Farhat, 3 Faisal Iqbal,4 Mohammad Yousuf (capt), 5 Misbah-ul-Haq, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Kamran Akmal(wk), 8 Mohammad Aamer, 9 Umar Gul/Saeed Ajmal, 10 Mohammad Asif, 11Danish KaneriaPitch and conditionsThe drop-in MCG pitches have generally provided a slowish surface in recentyears and the runs haven’t always flowed as easily as at other venues. Theforecast for the five days is mostly good, with temperatures expected torise as the game goes on.Stats and Trivia Pakistan have played eight Tests at the MCG for two wins, in 1978-79and 1981-82 Australia’s loss to South Africa in Melbourne last summer ended a runof nine consecutive wins for Australia at the MCG The MCG is the only one of Australia’s five major venues at whichMichael Clarke has not scored a Test centuryQuotes”I think the conditions here and probably in Sydney as well will helpPakistan.”
“Because Australia don’t have McGrath and Warney anymore, there are morechances of sides coming and playing well over here.”

Phil Hay gives positive Jack Harrison news

Leeds United winger Jack Harrison only suffered a dead leg against Arsenal and won’t be injured for any upcoming action, according to journalist Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Leeds humbled by Arsenal

The Whites’ worrying Premier League form continued on Saturday evening, with the Gunners cruising to a 4-1 victory at Elland Road.

An injury-ravaged Leeds side were rarely in the contest against Mikel Arteta’s team and there are now genuine concerns regarding a relegation battle.

Marcelo Bielsa has a host of key men unavailable and there were worries that Harrison had also suffered an injury after being replaced in the first half.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375277″]

The Latest: Positive Harrison update

However, taking to Twitter after the game, Hay confirmed in a nine-word verdict that the winger only had a dead leg, with no serious injury detected.

The journalist tweeted: “Harrison has a dead leg so that’s not serious.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-28/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: No more injuries

This is a rare positive injury update in an otherwise disastrous season for Leeds, who simply cannot afford any more injuries to important figures.

Harrison may not have been at his best this season, failing to score in 15 Premier League appearances, but his availability is crucial in terms of allowing Bielsa to rotate in attack.

Saturday’s defeat only heightened the need to bring in January reinforcements, though, with Leeds’ squad looking threadbare at best amid their precarious league position.
