Journalist hails Pedro Neto as Wolves’ "most exciting player"

“Wolves have a real player on their hands” – Journalist makes exciting Molineux claimPedro Neto is the most exciting player at Wolves, claims Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield.

The 21-year-old is currently being linked with a move away from Molineux, with 90min reporting that Liverpool, Tottenham and Juventus are all interested in him.

This comes after a season where Neto thoroughly impressed. In 31 Premier League appearances, the Portuguese winger conjured up 11 goal contributions, more than any other Wolves player (via WhoScored).

He also averaged 2.1 dribbles per game, leaving him just outside the division’s top 10 for that category, showing his ability to beat defenders.

Ultimately, for Hatfield, there probably is not a more entertaining player at Molineux in this moment of time.

“He’s arguably the most exciting player at the club,” the Wolves journalist told FFC. “If he’s the same player as he was before he got injured, then Wolves have a real player on their hands.”

Neto has been out of action since April after he picked up a serious knee injury. It is a blow for new manager Bruno Lage, who will probably have to wait a while before the Portugal international is fully fit and firing again.

If all goes well, though, the Wolves boss will indeed have quite the player on his hands.

Pundit claims Ward-Prowse will cost Aston Villa up to £40m

Carlton Palmer believes Aston Villa will have to pay over the odds to capture James Ward-Prowse after receiving a big-money offer for Jack Grealish.

Premier League champions Manchester City have tabled an English record bid of £100million for Grealish as they look to prise the talisman away from his boyhood club.

It has been reported that Villa are expected to accept the offer despite the England international still having four years remaining on his £120,000-per-week deal.

Prior to City’s bumper offer being lodged, Villa boss Dean Smith had set his sights on persuading Southampton to sell Ward-Prowse but saw a £25million bid rejected.

Ward-Prowse has played every minute in consecutive Premier League campaigns and Saints are keen to hold onto the midfielder.

He contributed seven assists and scored nine goals, including a brace of free-kicks in Southampton’s 4-3 win at Villa Park, last term.

Ex-Southampton midfielder Palmer believes Villa will have to increase their opening offer significantly if they are to have any chance of Saints agreeing to let their captain leave St Mary’s.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Palmer said: “I think an offer of £35million or £40million will get him out of Southampton but they will have to pay over the odds for players because people know they have this money. That’s unfortunate.

“Ideally, Aston Villa would have liked to have done their business before the offer for Grealish.”

Liam Kennedy fears Newcastle atmosphere could turn toxic

Shields Gazette reporter Liam Kennedy fears the atmosphere could turn toxic if Newcastle United fail to bring in new recruits before the transfer window closes.

The Magpies are yet to bolster their squad with acquisitions despite the start of the Premier League season being less than a week away.

Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock has been boss Steve Bruce’s top transfer target all summer, having scored eight goals in 14 appearances during his loan spell at St James’ Park last season.

While Newcastle initially hoped to make Willock’s move permanent, they have since explored the possibility of another temporary deal being struck.

However, the Magpies’ hopes of landing the former England under-21 international, who became the first player to find the back of the net in seven consecutive Premier League fixtures since Alan Shearer during his loan spell, suffered a blow when Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta insisted the 21-year-old is part of his plans.

Newcastle have yet to turn their attentions elsewhere and Kennedy admits Magpies fans could become disgruntled.

He told Football FanCast: “If they get off to a bad start this season, no signings come in or there are any more delays with the takeover, I think it could erupt.

“Newcastle United can become very toxic. The year when Newcastle got relegated the first time under Mike Ashley, I remember how toxic it got and that really pushed onto the pitch.

“The big fear is whether it will become toxic this time. Looking at social media, which isn’t always the best judge, it does have the feel that it could turn toxic very quickly.”

MCFC fans rage at goalkeeper shirts

Manchester City fans are livid with their goalkeeper shirts for the 2021/22 campaign, which were leaked on Wednesday.

The start of the Premier League season is now just a matter of days away, and the Citizens will be preparing to face Tottenham in their opening match. Pep Guardiola and co will be hoping the signing of Jack Grealish (mancity.com) will inspire the Etihad Stadium outfit to another league title and perhaps a Champions League trophy.

Even though the start of the campaign is so close you can almost touch it, the kits have not yet been confirmed. However, a Footy Headlines link appears to show the goalkeeper shirts for the home, away and third kits. It is fair to say that the designs have not gone down well at all with the supporters – they look more like t-shirts than part of a football kit.

The images were shared on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and they attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Pundit Liam Delap move to West Brom would suit all parties

Carlton Palmer reckons that West Brom signing Manchester City youngster Liam Delap is a move that would suit all parties.

The teenager, son of former long throw specialist Rory Delap, has made three first-team outings for City, but has caught the eye of most of the Championship following his exhilarating form in Premier League 2.

Delap, who netted on his senior debut in the EFL Cup for Pep Guardiola’s men, struck 24 times in 20 appearances for City’s Under-23s last term, including three hat-tricks and four braces.

And according to The Express and Star, West Brom are the latest second-tier outfit to register their interest in the 18-year-old, even though he’s currently injured and hasn’t been involved in either of City’s two competitive fixtures this season.

But with Delap desperate for regular first-team football, something that’s unlikely to happen at City, Palmer believes a switch to the Hawthorns would benefit the youngster.

He exclusively told Football FanCast:

“Of course, because he’s a young player. And I have said young players need to play first-team football.

“So yeah, go out and play first-team football, get experience, be in the first-team dressing room – and it’s a benefit for all parties.”

Bridge wanted to see Alderweireld and Romero together at Spurs

Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge would have liked to have seen Cristian Romero and Toby Alderweireld play together for Tottenham.

Alderweireld departed the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer after six years with Spurs.

The 32-year-old made 236 appearances during his time in north London, scoring nine goals and assisting a further five, before joining Qatari side Al-Duhail for a fee reported to be £13m this summer [The Guardian].

Cristian Romero joined Spurs from Atalanta this summer on a loan with the option to buy for £42.5m [Alasdair Gold]. The defender was named Best Defender in Serie A last season after making 42 appearances for Atalanta, scoring three goals and providing five assists, and he helped the club to a third-place finish Serie A.

But Bridge wanted to see Alderweireld and Romero play together in Spurs shirts, feeling the latter could have done with the former’s experience.

He told Football FanCast: “Romero, top-class centre-half, but he might need a bit of experience in the Premier League and if he’s got Toby with him, that’s what I wanted to see but I suppose it was a pretty good fee and good wage for Toby.”

Spurs got their Premier League campaign off to a brilliant start and kept a clean sheet, beating Manchester City 1-0 last weekend.

Man City fans slam Pep Guardiola comments

Pep Guardiola has revealed that it is not certain whether Manchester City will sign a striker during this summer transfer window.

Earlier this summer, the Citizens allowed Sergio Aguero to leave on a free transfer – he has since made the move to Barcelona (fcbarcelona.com). However, they have not yet signed a new centre-forward, and although results like the 5-0 win over Norwich City suggest they have plenty of ability elsewhere, the preceding 1-0 defeats to Tottenham and Leicester City indicate that they need to bring one in.

Guardiola has been discussing City’s transfer dealings, and he admitted the club will sign a new striker only if the transfer window allows (via City Xtra), saying: ““When we decided not to extend the contract of Sergio Aguero and people asked what we would do, I said many times it would depend on the market.

“Maybe we will buy, maybe not. It is still the same situation. I will never complain. I have never complained since day one and I will not do it now.”

This has not pleased some City supporters, who believe that a new forward should have been a priority. The comments were shared on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and they attracted plenty of attention from supporters.

Livramento is already proving a bargain

Southampton’s new signing Valentino Livramento is already proving himself to be a bargain after two impressive appearances in the Premier League.

The 18-year-old, who joined from Chelsea in a deal worth just £5m earlier in the transfer window, earned a surprise start in Southampton’s opening day defeat against Everton at Goodison Park despite Kyle Walker-Peters’ impressive form last season.

The teenage defender kept his place for Sunday’s game against Manchester United at St Mary’s and quickly won over the Southampton faithful with an excellent display.

Livramento featured at right-back in the first half but moved further forward in the second 45 as Hasenhuttl tightened things up. The youngster emphasised his quality going forward with several lung-busting runs down the right-hand side, whilst also helping the Saints earn an impressive draw with his defensive abilities.

Although he had never played a senior game of football before his move to St Mary’s, he has not looked out of place in his two appearances thus far, contributing an impressive 16 recoveries and 15 duels won across the games against Everton and Manchester United.

Only Che Adams and Mohammed Salisu have averaged a higher rating in the Premier League so far this season according to WhoScored, which suggests that the 18-year-old has been an excellent addition to Hasenhuttl’s squad; and at such a young age, he is only going to get better.

Hampshire Live journalist Tom Leach was full of praise for the youngster after the game on Sunday, writing: “The star of the first half, Livramento was excellent. He battled against men with his best moment coming just before the break, racing down the right-wing and putting a ball in for Adam Armstrong. His second-half performance was nearly as strong. He is a very impressive young man.”

Considering that he is keeping Walker-Peters out of the team on current form, Hasenhuttl will be delighted with the way that Livramento has started his Southampton career, and the manager will be hoping that the teenage prodigy can continue to improve throughout the season.

Liverpool fans bemoan Firmino injury

A number of Liverpool supporters have been reacting to Roberto Firmino’s injury, saying the Reds must now sign another attacker in the coming days.

Jurgen Klopp’s team could only draw 1-1 at home to Chelsea on Saturday evening, in what proved to be a thrilling contest at Anfield.

Liverpool couldn’t break down their ten-man opponents for the entirety of the second half, with the Blues defending expertly and the hosts running out of ideas.

The Reds suffered a first-half blow when Firmino had to go off with a hamstring injury, with Klopp admitting after the game that the forward will need a scan [via The Times‘ Paul Joyce on Twitter].

It looks as though the Brazilian could now be absent for a number of weeks, potentially highlighting the need for another attacker to come in before deadline day on Tuesday.

Palace fans react to Schlupp injury

Crystal Palace winger Jeffrey Schlupp has sustained an injury whilst on international duty.

Schlupp started for Ghana in their World Cup qualifier against Ethiopia, along with club team-mate Jordan Ayew, but was forced off after only 27 minutes of the match.

Crystal Palace fans are now waiting to discover the severity of the problem.

Schlupp has appeared in all four competitive matches so far under new manager Patrick Vieira.

The 28-year-old sustained two injuries last season, the first a knock and the second a more serious hamstring issue which kept him out for ten matches at the start of the year (via Transfermarkt).

What about Palace’s other injuries?

Luka Milivojevic and new signing Michael Olise could make their first appearances of the season shortly after the international break.

But Eberechi Eze and Nathan Ferguson remain out long-term after suffering Achilles injuries.

Fan feed Palace XTRA relayed the news from Ghana, and here’s what supporters made of it.
