Better than Kudus: 8/10 Spurs talent is heading for a Spence-esque revival

Tottenham Hotspur might not have secured all three points away to Brighton & Hove Albion, but Thomas Frank must be satisfied with the way things are taking shape.

The Spurs boss replaced Ange Postecoglou in the summer and was tasked with creating a more stable project. Tottenham won the Europa League last year, but also languished to a 17th-place finish in the top flight.

Signings have been made, and while he’s an imperfect player, Mohamed Kudus has offered much to the Lilywhites cause after signing from West Ham United for £55m in July.

Mohammed Kudus' start to life at Spurs

Kudus’ shot somewhat fortuitously found Richarlison before the break, and so the Brazilian converted and halved the deficit, scoring a crucial goal that would lead to late parity.

Richarlison for Tottenham

The Ghanaian winger still needs to bring his clinical output into focus, but there’s no denying he is a talented and effective winger, adding a dimension to Frank’s project.

According to Sofascore, Kudus won eight duels and completed six dribbles across the afternoon, causing all sorts of problems for his opponents and whipping in the ball that ricocheted off Jan Paul van Hecke.

With three assists from five Premier League appearances for Tottenham, Kudus is coming into his own, bouncing back from a difficult campaign last year with the Hammers.

However, this isn’t the biggest revival within the Spurs squad, with Destiny Udogie rising back up to the fore in a manner not dissimilar to that of Djed Spence last season.

Frank's own Djed Spence revival

When Spence was called up to Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad, it was a landmark moment in the 25-year-old full-back’s development.

While Spence has revived his career over the past year, reinventing himself last year under Postecoglou’s wing, Udogie’s performance against Brighton underscored the importance of having a natural left-footer at left-back, working wonders for the side’s progression.

Awarded an 8/10 match rating by football.london, the statistics perhaps don’t tell the full story, with Udogie shackling – for the most part – the bright Yankuba Minteh and working effectively to build up patterns of offensive play down the left flank.

They also considered Udogie to have been the standout performer against the Seagulls.

Having struggled with injury and subsequent dips in form last year, the Italy international made his first start of the season here, with Frank hailing his “absolutely exceptional” performance and continuing to remark that he was “almost unstoppable going forward”.

With Udogie fit and firing on all cylinders, Tottenham’s backline will begin to look far more fluent, not just solidifying when facing the ball but opening up a more coherent build-up process too.

This is not to the discredit of Spence, who continues to go from strength to strength at the club, but instead highlights the quality of the 22-year-old, who now provides his manager with the very best kind of selection headache.

Destiny Udogie for Tottenham

Kudus might have been directly involved in both of Tottenham’s goals, but Udogie proved his worth as one of the most exciting full-backs in the Premier League, and under a new manager in Frank, this might just prove to be the start of something special.

Baleba alternative: Man Utd now eyeing "complete" new Bundesliga midfielder

Aiming to end their transfer window with a big midfield addition, Manchester United and INEOS have already reportedly set their sights on an alternative option to Carlos Baleba.

Latest on Man Utd's pursuit of Baleba

After falling to a club-record low in the Premier League and losing in the Europa League final at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur last season, not many expected Manchester United to be in a strong position to attract top stars this summer. The lure of the Theatre of Dreams remains strong, however, and INEOS have so far welcomed Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko to transform their attack.

They’re not stopping there, either. With Ruben Amorim’s attack finally sharpened, INEOS have reportedly shifted their attention towards United’s midfield and adding Carlos Baleba to an impressive summer of arrivals. Alas, as if often the case, Brighton & Hove Albion’s star won’t come cheap and initial reports have suggested that the midfielder will cost over £100m this month.

As things stand, that valuation is likely to be out of Manchester United’s range, but there is still one glimmer of hope to hold on to. Reports are also indicating that Baleba is keen on a move to Old Trafford even without the prospect of playing European football.

Whether INEOS can negotiate a way past Brighton’s hefty price tag will be the main obstacle between Baleba becoming a Manchester United player. It’s an obstacle that not many have got past before, with Chelsea paying bid for Moises Caicedo and Marc Cucurella in the past. Unlike the Blues, though, United may have no choice but to turn towards other targets.

Man Utd identify Stiller as Baleba alternative

According to The Boot Room, INESO and Manchester United are already eyeing Angelo Stiller as an alternative option to Baleba if they fail to reach Brighton’s valuation. The VfB Stuttgart midfielder has previously found himself on Liverpool’s radar and could now come back to haunt Manchester United’s rivals by completing a move to Old Trafford.

A player who that analyst Ben Mattinson dubbed “complete”, it’s clear to see why Stiller is on United’s radar. In possession, his ability to progress play is an incredibly valuable trait, whilst his numbers off the ball aren’t too far off Baleba’s quality.

VfB Stuttgart'sAngeloStillercelebrates scoring their first goal

Given that he’s likely to be cheaper than the Brighton star, Manchester United should seriously consider a move for the German this month if a transfer for their top target fails to materialise. It is also worth noting that, as impressive as he already is, Stiller is likely to get even better at just 24 years old.

Man Utd need to learn lessons from Chelsea in the art of selling as Todd Boehly's mad transfer plan finally makes sense

Before Sir Jim Ratcliffe invested in Manchester United, he tried to buy Chelsea. Although he grew up on a council estate in Failsworth in north Manchester and attended games at Old Trafford with his father as a child, Ratcliife took a liking to Chelsea as an adult while living and working in affluent west London.

"I have a house in Chelsea, I've lived in Chelsea for many years, I've had a season ticket for many years, I have a business that's based in Chelsea," Ratcliffe explained to the at the time. "When I was living in London for many years, I could go and watch Chelsea. It was quite difficult to go and watch United, so I have split loyalties."

However, perhaps surprisingly for a man who built a petrochemicals empire and was at one point the richest person in Britain, Ratcliffe made a rather basic mistake: he submitted his £4.25 billion ($5.79bn) bid six weeks after the deadline set by Raine, the bank negotiating the sale.
"My message to Raine is don't discount our offer," Ratcliffe pleaded. "We are British and have great intentions for Chelsea. If I was Raine I wouldn't close any door." His message proved to be in vain, however, as INEOS later revealed that Raine dismissed the bid "out of hand" before accepting the one from the consortium led by American billionaire Todd Boehly.

Just 18 months later, Ratcliffe completed his 27 percent stake in United and now he and Boehly are direct competitors. They have each taken their fair share of stick from their own supporters as well as the media. For Ratcliffe, the onslaught of criticism has spoiled his much-loved morning routine of reading the newspapers.

He could take a leaf out of the book of Boehly, who recently explained how he copes with scrutiny: "The reality is that the sooner you learn you can't keep everyone happy all the time, then freedom comes from that." There is another area where Ratcliffe could learn from Boehly: the art of selling players.

Getty From ridicule to respect

Boehly was the subject of much ridicule in his first season running Chelsea, partly for his whacky ideas such as a North vs South 'All-star' game or relegation play-offs but mostly for his approach to transfers. Appointing himself as sporting director, Boehly acted like he wanted to buy every player in the world and splashed a barely believable £747m ($1 billion) in his first 12 months.

He took a wild approach to appointing coaches too, firing Champions League-winning Thomas Tuchel after less than two months and then sacking his successor Graham Potter less than seven months later. He then hired Frank Lampard, who had been dismissed by Chelsea two years earlier, on the advice of comedian James Corden, with predictably terrible consequences. The club's lavish spending on players continued in his second year in charge but results continued to disappoint.

Chelsea's decision to get rid of Mauricio Pochettino just as things were starting to look up led to more criticism of Boehly, but events of the last year have changed how Chelsea and their owner are viewed. The Blues finished fourth in the Premier League to book their ticket back to the Champions League and in July they became world champions.

After destroying treble winners Paris Saint-Germain in the final in New York, coach Enzo Maresca gave a message of defiance: "They were saying that we are too young, we are not good enough. Unfortunately for them, they have been all wrong…. So, in English, how do you say? Eff-off to all of them."

AdvertisementGetty Images SportShowing United how it's done

Boehly would have been entitled to agree with his coach and now the venture capitalist's grand transfer plan is starting to make sense. Chelsea spent £285m ($388m) this summer, a figure only topped by Liverpool. But the outlay to sign 10 new players for Maresca was handsomely offset by sales of £288m ($392m) while getting rid of 15 players.

It meant they had the sixth-lowest net spend in the league. Contrast that with Ratcliffe's United, who spent £216m ($294m) on five new players and received £68m ($92m). Their net spend came in at £148m ($201m), the third highest in the league behind Arsenal and Liverpool. But the squad Ruben Amorim has been left with looks ill-equipped, lacking at least one if not two capable midfielders and a proven goalkeeper.

Of particular concern was United's inability to shift players as the clock ticked towards transfer deadline day. They could only find loan deals for Andre Onana, Rasmus Hojlund and Jadon Sancho – who had cost a combined £195m ($265m) – and Marcus Rashford, who just two years previously had scored 30 goals in a season and signed one of the most lucrative contracts in the club's history.

United sold just two of the so-called bomb squad players that everyone knew they were looking to shift. Antony went to Real Betis for £21m ($28.5m), a quarter of the price United paid to get him from Ajax in 2022.

Getty The Nkunku paradox

United were at least glad when they convinced Chelsea to pay £40m ($54m) for Alejandro Garnacho, who became the club's fourth biggest sale ever. But the club had entered the window hoping to get £60m ($82m) for the Argentina international, eventually dropping their asking price by a third for a player who had scored 26 goals and made 22 assists and who only turned 21 in July.

The two club's differing aptitudes in the selling market can be seen in the deals for Rasmus Hojlund and Christopher Nkunku. The French forward's career with Chelsea was hugely disappointing and had gotten off to a nightmare start, injuring his knee in a pre-season friendly just weeks after completing a £52m ($71m) move from RB Leipzig.

He made only 11 league starts in two years, scoring six goals. But Chelsea still managed to negotiate his departure for AC Milan in a deal worth £34m ($46m). Hojlund, a £72m ($98m) signing in the same summer, started 48 games and scored 14 goals. And yet there were no takers for the Dane, who joined Napoli on loan on deadline day in a deal that could see him move to the Serie A club permanently next summer for £36m ($49m). Hojlund is five years younger than Nkunku.

Chelsea also pulled off something of a coup by agreeing a £70m ($95m) package with Bayern Munich for Nicolas Jackson, who they had been trying to sell all summer. And yet arguably the Blues' most impressive business relates to players who barely played for them, if at all.

The Blues sold Renato Veiga to Villarreal for £26m ($35m) despite the Portuguese making only seven league appearances for Chelsea following his £12m ($16m) move the previous year from Augsburg, only one of which was a start. But a half-season on loan at Juventus was enough for his market value to more than double.

Ian Maatsen made only 12 league appearances for Chelsea despite joining the club in 2018 when he was 16. He had three loan spells, none of which were in the top flight, before making his way into the first team under Mauricio Pochettino in 2023 before being sent out on loan to Borussia Dortmund. Six months later, he was on his way to Aston Villa for £37.5m ($51m). Despite his fleeting career at Stamford Bridge, Maatsen is Chelsea's 10th most expensive sale of all time.

The club struck an agreement with UEFA to do this, or risk not being able to register new signings in their Champions League squad next season (Kaveh Solhekol).

This comes after Chelsea were fined for breaching FFP rules earlier this month, which is why sales will be crucial for BlueCo despite the club being in a pretty solid position when it comes to the Premier League’s separate PSR laws.

Chelsea have raised around £158 million through transfers already this summer, coming after Ishe Samuels-Smith sealed a £6.5 million move to sister club Strasbourg on Thursday.

The defender joins Felix, Madueke, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Basir Humphreys, Marcus Bettinelli, Djordje Petrovic and Mathis Amougou on Chelsea’s list of confirmed sales so far, but many more could still leave before the deadline.

Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, Renato Veiga, Tosin Adarabioyo, Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Carney Chukwuemeka, Lesley Ugochukwu, Armando Broja, Tosin Adarabioyo, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Alfie Gilchrist and Nicolas Jackson have all been linked with exits at some point this summer, with Chelsea demanding a premium for the latter.

According to Sky Sports, Chelsea value Jackson at up to £100 million, amid rumoured interest from Man United and other top clubs.

Chelsea sources expect Nicolas Jackson to seal 'out of nowhere' exit

Chelsea are not opposed to selling the Senegalese this summer, with Jackson enduring a torrid end to 2024/2025 despite scoring in the Conference League final against Real Betis.

He managed just one Premier League goal after the turn of the new year, spending some time on the sidelines through injury, and got sent off for a red card against Flamengo at the Club World Cup.

Journalist Simon Phillips has previously reported that Jackson’s agents are working to secure him a move elsewhere, and the same reporter has shared a fresh update via his Stamford Bridge sources.

Phillips writes that Chelsea insiders expect Jackson to seal an “out of nowhere” exit, and the former Villarreal star is now getting offers.

“SPTC sources heard just yesterday that ‘Jackson is getting offers’ now and this story is progressing. I still think he goes but again though, it’s not a dead cert that Chelsea replace him. But they will certainly explore options to do so and have a desire to do so.

“Our sources think a Jackson departure will come out of nowhere at this point.”

The 24-year-old has been linked not just to United, but a variety of Premier League sides.

It is believed by some that Aston Villa boss Unai Emery is keen to work with Jackson again, coming after the pair’s time together in La Liga at Villarreal.

He could be an adept solution for sides desperate to sign a new centre-forward, but they’ll first have to get past Chelsea’s sky-high valuation.

Revealed: Daniel Levy scuppered Tottenham's hopes of signing Luis Suarez because he didn't know what position the future Liverpool & Barcelona star played

Former Tottenham boss Martin Jol has revealed that ex-Spurs chief Daniel Levy passed up the chance to sign Luis Suarez before he joined Liverpool.

Tottenham chief Levy leaves clubSpurs had chance to sign young SuarezShocklingly passed up striker signingFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Following Jol's stint at Tottenham between 2004 and 2007, the Dutchman went on to manage Ajax from 2009 to 2010. In that time, he saw the rise of Uruguayan forward Suarez, who scored a remarkable 111 goals in 159 games there. The 69-year-old says that the north London team were interested in signing the ex-Nacional ace but eventually moved on as they thought he played in the same role as Tottenham's attacking midfielder, Rafael van der Vaart. Jol played Suarez as a "false wide player like Mohamed Salah" as he had Marko Pantelic as a number nin. In the end, the 6ft striker joined Liverpool in 2011 and the rest is history.

AdvertisementAFPWHAT JOL SAID

He told , "Daniel was unbelievable for Spurs, but not on the technical side. When you look at the players they've signed they had so many misfits. That is what I said to Daniel 'why don't you give me a phone call?'. I had Toby Alderweireld. I had [Christian] Eriksen make his debut for me. And I had Luis Suarez. I said, 'Why didn't you buy Suarez?'. He said, 'Because my people said that he is almost the same type of player as Van der Vaart'. Huh? Suarez is a striker. With me, he played from the right, but I knew that Suarez was not the right winger, but I had Marko Pantelic as a number nine, so I used Suarez as a false wide player like Salah. Suarez is a legend. It was £25m, but [Levy] didn't listen."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Levy left his role as Tottenham's executive chairman last week in a move that sent shockwaves around the Premier League following 24 years at Spurs. The 63-year-old played a huge part in ushering in their state-of-the-art stadium and making the club more financially sound, but not signing Suarez, when it appears they had the opportunity, is a big own goal. He went on to star for Liverpool and Barcelona, as well as becoming one of the best strikers of his generation. This is another case of what might have been for Tottenham.

While Tottenham enters into this new era without Levy at the helm, Suarez is still playing on at the age of 38 for Inter Miami. Meanwhile, Spurs are next in action on Saturday away to local rivals West Ham as the Premier League returns.

Ireland government approves permanent cricket stadium in Dublin

Ellyse Perry takes three wickets in six balls as Phoenix win first home game

ECB Media03-Aug-2024After losing 12 completed games in a row, Birmingham Phoenix, inspired by captain Ellyse Perry, made it two wins from two by squeezing the life out of Southern Brave to win by 16 runs at Edgbaston. With a hint of rain in the air, Phoenix were put in by Georgia Adams and a steady start was only interrupted when 16-year-old slow-left armer Tilly Corteen-Coleman struck with her first ball to have Sophie Devine lbw. She struck again, Rhianna Southby effecting a smart stumping to get rid of Sterre Kalis, forcing Perry and Amy Jones to consolidate. They added 23 for the third wicket before Perry holed out to Maia Bouchier at long-on. With the score 55 for 3 at the halfway stage, the Phoenix needed to accelerate and did through Jones, and a cameo of 22 in 12 balls from Emily Arlott that included two sixes.Jones’s half-century saw Phoenix reach 137 for 7, with Lauren Cheatle having conceded just 14 runs from her 20-ball allocation. After three boundaries from the returning Smriti Mandhana at the start of the Brave innings, it became the Perry show, as the Australia legend picked up three key wickets – Mandhana, Bouchier for a duck, and skipper Adams – in her first ten deliveries.Danni Wyatt and Freya Kemp steadied the ship, the former striking a typically belligerent 33-ball 43 before Charis Pavely got rid of Kemp and Hannah Baker induced an error from Wyatt. At 92 for 5 from 69 balls, the momentum was with the Phoenix, and all of their bowlers stuck to their task admirably, throttling the Brave innings as the required run-rate climbed and the visitors simply ran out of steam.”Emily Arlott’s innings was the difference, clearing the fence with ease,” Jones said. “And Pez’s start was unbelievable. When you have someone like that, who can deliver such performances, it is a huge lift for the team. We were really good in the field and backed up the bowlers.”

West Brom could sign a "fabulous" Diangana replacement who's an EFL veteran

West Bromwich Albion supporters won’t have to wait too much longer to see who their beloved Baggies will play in the opening matches of the new Championship season.

Indeed, the always hotly anticipated fixture list will be released next week, with Ryan Mason hopeful that whatever selection of fixtures is thrust his side’s way, they can start the fresh second-tier campaign with a bang, instead of a whimper.

One figure that definitely won’t feature under Mason’s early tenure is Grady Diangana, with the Congolese forward reportedly edging ever closer to a Hawthorns departure, after failing to seal an extended contract this summer.

Diangana's current situation

Mason’s arrival on the scene might well have contributed to the former West Ham United man wanting to leave, knowing that the 33-year-old boss would want to stamp his mark onto proceedings from the get-go.

It is a sad severing of the ties, however, with Diangana once viewed as an electric menace donning Baggies blue and white in both the Premier League and in the EFL.

In total, the 27-year-old would collect an impressive combined tally of 48 goals and assists from 202 appearances in the West Midlands, with Diangana often having the Hawthorns masses in the palm of his hand when pulling off unbelievable finishes like the one above.

But, the output on Diangana’s end had begun to dry up – as seen in just four goals and three assists coming his way last season – with a reported reunion now on the cards for him to uproot to Valencia to link up with ex-Baggies boss Carlos Corberan to try and recapture his best.

Whilst Diangana looks forward to his possible moment in the sun in Spain, West Brom will no doubt be on the hunt for a replacement to bolster their options in attack.

West Brom's "fabulous" Diangana replacement

After all, the long-standing servant’s exit will be felt in terms of the personnel Mason can select from.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Jed Wallace is the only other recognisable right winger in the depleted Baggies camp currently in the wake of Diangana moving on, whilst the rookie manager has even fewer faces to call upon in the number ten spot – another position that the 27-year-old was comfortable playing in – with John Swift also heading out of the building on a free transfer.

Therefore, in hunting down an immediate fix to Diangana’s exit, West Brom will need to win themselves a versatile and flexible presence who can play all over the attacking positions.

Who could that be? Well, former Derby County captain Tom Lawrence is perhaps their man. It has been reported by TEAMtalk this week that West Brom are interested in landing the now free agent forward.

Away from his ability to be adaptable making him a worthwhile candidate to replace Diangana, the 31-year-old also boasts a vast collection of goals and assists in the Championship himself, with a mighty 50 goals and 40 assists tallied up from 264 career appearances in the second-tier.

Staggeringly, that’s 42 more goal contributions than the Valencia-linked star managed during his entire Hawthorns spell, albeit from 62 fewer clashes.

The similarities don’t just stop here either, with Lawrence also prone to scoring an audacious strike or two during his celebrated Derby stay, much like Diangana at his Baggies peak.

His expertise in this regard even saw ex-Rams boss Gary Rowett label the entertaining Welshman as “fabulous” when the pair were together at Pride Park, as West Brom now pray he can arrive on the scene this summer and roll back the years to fire Mason and Co. to promotion.

Pulling off such a feat would make the managerial newcomer an instant icon at the Hawthorns, with Lawrence also entering into the club’s hall-of-fame no doubt by securing a promotion success Diangana could never get over the line.

He could be their next Rooney: Man Utd submit bid to sign big-money star

Ruben Amorim may have had one transfer window to get his feet under the window but despite the arrival of Patrick Dorgu, Manchester United have not made much headway.

Amorim has failed to win 20 of his 33 matches in the Old Trafford hotseat and the constant chopping and changing was there for all to see when Dorgu didn’t even start on Sunday.

Instead, young Harry Amass made his Premier League bow and in the words of Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst, he ‘did not look remotely out of his depth.’

So, there is a bright future at United if those players can be nurtured well. Amorim has some cracking young players at his disposal, notably Chido Obi and Ayden Heaven. Frenchman Leny Yoro forms part of that too.

Who will join in the summer? United fans will hope this Premier League star does.

Man United's hunt for new attackers

When Joshua Zirkzee went off injured on Sunday in the 4-1 defeat to Newcastle, you could see the pain not just in his eye but his manager’s eyes too. This was not what they needed.

Zirkzee, although not a rampant scorer, has begun to find his feet in Manchester but Rasmus Hojlund’s struggles continue. He has scored just once at club level since December.

That explains links to Wolves star Matheus Cunha with reports in recent weeks suggesting that United would like to bring the forward in over the summer.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

However, according to reports in Spain, he’s not the only Premier League star on the club’s radar ahead of the next transfer window.

This report notes that United have gone as far as to submit a huge bid to sign Aston Villa’s talisman, Morgan Rogers.

Now capped by England, the attacker is the subject of a £70m offer from INEOS, but sadly for those of a Red Devils persuasion, Villa boss Unai Emery deems him to be ‘untouchable’ this summer.

Their interest in the player is deemed ‘serious’ but it’s unclear whether Emery and Co will be willing to negotiate.

How Morgan Rogers could be the new Wayne Rooney

Once of Manchester City’s youth academy, Rogers has been around the houses in his bid to become a top-flight star.

Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze for England.

The 22-year-old was at West Brom before City picked him and then he found a home at Middlesbrough, scoring seven goals and supplying nine assists in 33 outings.

Villa saw enough in that brief stint on Teeside to bring him to the Midlands in a deal worth just an initial £8m. That’s proven to be a bargain.

Rogers is now an England international and deservedly so after a smashing campaign, not just domestically but in Europe too.

He has scored a Champions League hat-trick and bagged against PSG, taking his tally of goals for the season to 14 in 46 games. The forward has also posted 12 assists.

Capable of playing off the flanks, as a central striker and most notably in the no.10 role, his form has drawn comparisons to Wayne Rooney.

Wazza had a different footballing education. Thrown into Premier League life as a teenager, it was at United where he became a global phenomenon. A centre-forward by trade, Rooney ended up playing behind the striker, as Rogers is doing now.

Wayne Rooney's Manchester United record (timeless)

After catching the eye against Latvia in the last international break, it was Glenn Hoddle who made the comparison.

Boasting similar builds at a young age – a stockier frame – it helps to propel defenders away. That said, it’s not just their upper body strength that is comparable.

Rogers possesses that low centre of gravity and ability to brush off his opponents with pace and close-knit control, just as a young Rooney was so famously doing for England and United all those years ago.

With that quality in mind, it’s arguably not much of a surprise to see him rank among the division’s finest when it comes to dribbling and successfully taking on a player.

While the Villa star is yet to find the same level of ability in front of goal as Rooney had at the same age, still just 22, there is plenty of room for him to become a more lethal attacking player.
