"Ugly" – Club director the angriest he's ever been about selling star to Sunderland

Sunderland have left Dutch club NEC Nijmegen furious after the transfer involving goalkeeper Robin Roefs, with the Black Cats supposedly breaching a “verbal agreement”.

Speakman "delighted" with Sunderland's deadline day

The Black Cats had a summer transfer window to treasure, bringing in as many as 13 players on permanent deals, as well as snapping up loan signings. One player in the latter category was Lutsharel Geetruida, who has sealed a temporary move to Sunderland from RB Leipzig, with sporting director Kristjaan Speakman “delighted” with the piece of business.

Despite plenty of positivity at Sunderland, following such a strong summer in the market, they look to have made an enemy with one club.

Sunderland slammed by club for "breaching agreement"

As reported by Algemeen Daglbad [via Sport Witness], NEC Nijmegen are livid with Sunderland about their failure to send them Jenson Seelt as part of the deal for Roefs. Seelt was expected to head the other way once the shot-stopper moved to Wearside, but went to Wolfsburg on deadline day instead.

NEC general manager Wilco van Schaik has since revealed technical director Carlos Allbers was the angriest he’s ever seen him, regretting the Roefs transfer as a whole.

“I wasn’t happy about that. And certainly not Carlos [Allbers, techincal director]. The takeover was a done deal. We closed the deal with Roefs, and then we also made a verbal agreement with Sunderland that we would acquire Seelt for this amount. They said they’d keep him for a while because he needed to play.

Jenson Seelt for Sunderland.

“Okay, no problem. It just took forever. Last Sunday, they said they had so many injuries that he wasn’t allowed anymore. On Friday, they called again to say they were going to buy two more defenders after all. So he’s back. Well, we’d already made the arrangements, and suddenly we saw him in the Wolfsburg shirt yesterday afternoon.

“That’s not how you should do business. This is the ugly side of football. I’ve never seen Carlos so angry. He texted them this morning saying he regretted selling Roefs to them. I know Carlos to be very honest and sincere, and I’ve never seen him so angry. He was done with it.”

It goes without saying that Sunderland are in the wrong if they agreed to sell Seelt, although it remains to be seen how concrete that claim is.

Either way, the 22-year-old will hopefully enjoy a fruitful time of things at Wolfsburg instead, as the Black Cats potentially look to cool the situation and potentially sell him for a larger profit in the future.

Worse than Bruno: Amorim must drop Man Utd star who lost the ball 18 times

Manchester United failed to get their first win of the Premier League season on the board as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

Leny Yoro’s header, which was later decided to be an own goal from Rodrigo Muniz, gave the Red Devils the lead in the second half, and they appeared to be on course for all three points.

Unfortunately, a lapse in concentration at the back for United allowed Emile Smith Rowe to ghost in and knock the ball past Altay Bayindir to seal a point for the home side.

There was also a missed penalty amongst it all, as Bruno Fernandes skied his effort over the bar in the first-half before the own goal from Muniz put United ahead anyway.

Bruno Fernandes' performance against Fulham

The Portugal international had the perfect chance to open the scoring when a penalty was awarded for Calvin Bassey’s foul on Mason Mount in the box, but blazed his effort well over the bar.

Fernandes was unhappy with the fact that the referee interrupted his run-up, which he did start again, but that was not enough to excuse how poor the strike was.

The United skipper did, however, enjoy a very solid game aside from that penalty miss. Per Sofascore, the central midfielder won eight of his ten duels, completed both of his attempted dribbles, and created one chance.

Fernandes tried to get on the ball to make things happen, whilst being combative and strong out of possession, but let himself down in unusual fashion from the penalty spot.

Meanwhile, Patrick Dorgu’s overall performance was worse than the captain’s on the left and Ruben Amorim should consider ruthlessly dropping him from the side.

Why Patrick Dorgu should be dropped

The Danish full-back is in the side to provide dynamism and an attacking outlet down the left as a wing-back, but did not show anywhere near enough quality against the Cottagers.

Dorgu’s performance left far too much to be desired. Whilst Fernandes was, at least, strong defensively, the wing-back lost six of his eight ground duels and was dribbled past twice without making a single tackle, per Sofascore.

This shows that it was far too easy for Fulham attackers to get the better of him in one-on-one battles, and that he did not provide Luke Shaw with enough protection down the left flank.

Unfortunately, the 20-year-old flop’s use of the ball did not make up for his lack of defensive quality, as the former Serie A starlet failed to deliver quality in possession.

As you can see in the table above, Dorgu lost possession a whopping 18 times without creating a single chance or having a shot on goal to test Bernd Leno.

The one time that the Danish whiz did make a perfect run to break the last line of Fulham’s defence, his stretched attempt to cross the ball hit the side netting without troubling anyone in Fulham white.

This is why Amorim must ruthlessly ditch the young defender from the starting XI for the clash with Burnley in the Premier League next weekend, after the League Cup game against Burnley.

In an ideal world, that would include a change of shape to a back four with Luke Shaw in his more natural position, but it could see Shaw or Diogo Dalot play as the left wing-back instead.

Zing-bail glitch prompts WPL rule change: Wicket broken only when bail fully dislodged

The bails being used for WPL 2025 were found to be lighting up prematurely

Nagraj Gollapudi17-Feb-2025

Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet Kaur was unhappy about a run out during MI’s game against DC•WPL

In the wake of the contentious run-out incidents during the last-ball thriller between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians on February 15, the WPL has notified teams that the Zing bail will need to be fully dislodged for umpires to judge that the wicket is broken in the context of run-out and stumping decisions. This means the pre-existing playing condition, which states that the stumps are deemed to be broken when the bails light up, will not be applicable in WPL 2025 going forward. Appendix D of the tournament playing conditions, which was shared with teams in the lead-up to the season, states: “where Zing wickets are used, the moment at which the wicket has been put down shall be deemed to be the first frame in which the Zing lights are illuminated and subsequent frames show the bail permanently removed from the top of the stumps.”ESPNcricinfo has learned that the reason for the rule change is that the batch of bails being used during this WPL have been lighting up at the slightest disturbance, even when both spigots have not come off the grooves on top of the stumps. Under the Laws of cricket, a bail is completely dislodged only when the bail comes entirely off the groove.Related

Run-out calls in MI-DC game turn focus on rules around LED stumps

The BCCI has used Zing bails both in bilateral and domestic cricket including the IPL and WPL. Each bail contains a microprocessor that detects the moment when both spigots have come off their grooves, and causes the bail to light up within 1/1000th of a second. During this WPL, it is understood that the bails began to flash even when one spigot was still resting on its groove. Consequently it was decided that third umpires would base their final ruling on the moment when the bail becomes completely dislodged, with both spigots coming off their grooves. This was why Gayathri Venugopalan, the third umpire for the Capitals-Mumbai match, made her final ruling in the three run-out decisions – which led to widespread debate – based on the point when the bails were completely off their grooves. It is learned that the match officials were told about this rule change on the morning of the Capitals-Mumbai match, which was the second game of the season. The teams, though, were notified on the day after the match.

'It hasn't been mentioned at all' – Wellington 2023 not on teams' mind ahead of second Test

Both Stokes and Latham say it is not something the players have been thinking of

Vithushan Ehantharajah05-Dec-2024Plenty has been spoken about the last time New Zealand entertained England at Wellington ahead of Friday’s second Test. And it is fair to say the players are bored of it.”The only chats I’ve had about it are speaking to you guys [the media],” Ben Stokes said when 2023’s one-run thriller was brought up on Thursday. This time around, public entertainment is not a priority: “Any win, any way, shape or form.”New Zealand captain Tom Latham felt similar, even if the spirit of that particular result needs to be evoked here and now. Just as it was then, New Zealand find themselves 1-0 down in the series, and in a peculiar state of flux once more.Related

Bethell holds No. 3 spot as England name unchanged XI

NZ in need of another fightback at scene of epic one-run win

They were in transition then and are seemingly in the same state of limbo 22 months on. And yet an unchanged XI from the first Test that contains seven survivors from that Neil Wagner-inspired epic is not wistfully romanticising about the possibility of history repeating itself. Parity in the series will have to be earned.”It hasn’t been mentioned at all,” Latham said. “We know it’s a completely different team, a completely different bowling attack to that was used here, a different make-up to the batting.”Defeat in Christchurch gives New Zealand a middling record of five wins and five defeats from ten Tests in 2024 so far. The India success, professional and deserved, looks like the beautiful anomaly that it is.A temptation to tweak perhaps should have been taken, if only to get Will Young, Player of the Series from that tour, into the XI. New Zealand are not in a position to leave form players out, particularly when those out of form can be swapped out with minimal fuss. The man most under the microscope is Tom Blundell, who could have been swapped out for Young, with either Devon Conway or Latham taking the gloves. A first innings 17 followed by a golden duck has dipped his calendar year average to 15.88. His one and only fifty came eight innings ago, in which time he has returned five single-figure scores, including two noughts.Clarity has been the key between Tests. Players were informed more than 24 hours before Thursday’s start that they would get the chance to go again, a chance at redemption to square the series. Blundell included, who will be playing at his home ground where he averages 55.16 in six Tests.”He’s always known that he’s been playing,” Latham said on whether the player himself had doubts about making the cut this week. “We fully back Tom in terms of his ability to score runs and do a good job behind the stumps. We know what a quality player he is.”New Zealand’s training session on Wednesday and Thursday featured catching sessions, which is nothing at all out of the norm but certainly drew more eyeballs after their botched fielding effort at Hagley Oval. Eight catches were dropped in England’s first innings, the most egregious being the first of five lives for Harry Brook on 18 before he went on to 171.”We did a bit of catching yesterday and today, just like we usually do. We haven’t necessarily put an extra focus on it. We always put the work in behind the scenes, regardless of whether things have gone our way or not.”Latham is guarded at the best of times, but there is a broader sense that New Zealand are keen to adopt a more ruthless approach. Not necessarily towards the opposition, but to themselves. The romanticism of Wellington 2023 counts for little. Nor does the first Test of this series.”Last week was last week,” Latham said. “We’ve got another opportunity this week. We try and stay as level as we can. We’ve been in this situation before when things haven’t necessarily gone the way that we’ve wanted in the first game.”

Shades of Joe Cole: Chelsea pursuing deal to sign "electric" £40m star

It’s almost time for Chelsea to return to action.

The Blues will very much undergo a truncated pre-season schedule, having won the Club World Cup on 13 July, surprisingly defeating Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final in New Jersey.

Chelsea's Reece James lifts the trophy as he celebrates withChelseamanager Enzo Maresca and teammates after winning the FIFA Club World Cup

Thus, Enzo Maresca’s team will have just two pre-season fixtures before their Premier League opener, welcoming Bayer Leverkusen to Stamford Bridge on Friday night, before taking on AC Milan in West London on Sunday.

Before then, will the Blues continue to make more signings?

Chelsea's search for even more attacking talent

Fair to say, Maresca has plenty of attacking options at his disposal.

Estêvão Willian, Jamie Gittens, João Pedro, and Liam Delap have all already arrived this summer, but the Blues are far from done yet, with potentially two new forwards on their way.

First, as reported by James Olley of ESPN, Chelsea are close to signing Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig for a reported fee of €50m (around £44m), with the Dutchman eager to make the move.

Meantime, as reported by Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are still pursuing Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho, adding that “no talks” have begun just yet, but the Argentine is “keen” on the move.

Elsewhere, Romano notes that the transfer is “not expected to be imminent” but that Garanacho is prioritising a move to Chelsea, with the Blues focussing on outgoings for now.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Garnacho was told to find a new club by manager Rúben Amorim back in May. Currently part of Man United’s infamous ‘bomb squad’, not with the first-team squad in the US, rather left behind at Carrington, alongside fellow outcasts Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia.

Just a few weeks ago, it was reported that Man United valued Garnacho at £70m. Still, now that it’s public knowledge he has been cast aside, James Ducker of The Telegraph believes he is available for £40m, with Chelsea in pole position to snap him up.

What Alejandro Garnacho would bring to Chelsea

At the start of the window, Jacob Steinberg of the Guardian reported that Chelsea are ‘prioritising the addition’ of a right-footed left-winger, with Garnacho very much their top target for this role.

His performances for Manchester United have certainly caught the eye, with Statman Dave labelling him one of the two “brightest young talents on the planet” as recently as October, alongside Lamine Yamal, which is high praise indeed.

Elsewhere, Kurosh Moghtader of Total Football Analysis labels him a ‘reliable attacking outlet’ who still has ‘room for improvement’, with Andy Mitten of The Athletic believing his ‘work rate’ and finishing have both got better in recent times.

When looking to compare Garnacho to a former Chelsea player of the not-too-distant past, he is stylistically most similar to Joe Cole.

Like Garnacho, Cole arrived from a Premier League rival as a 22-year-old back in 2003, namely West Ham United, having come through the Hammers’ academy, and made quite an impact during his seven seasons at Stamford Bridge.

In Chelsea blue, Cole made 282 appearances, scoring 39 goals and registering 47 assists, winning three Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and the EFL Cup.

At his best, Tom Mason of The Guardian believes Cole was ‘breathtaking’, praising his ‘creativity, flair, technical ability and vision’, adding that he was ‘always willing to receive a pass and take on the responsibility’.

Meantime, Sam Wallace of the Independent heralds his ‘silky touch’, noting that his best years came under José Mourinho when deployed as a left-winger in a ‘clearly defined’ role.

Well, in Maresca’s current set-up, Garnacho, who was hailed as “electric” by Statman Dave, could certainly thrive in a similar way.

Alejandro Garnacho

So, let’s assess how Cole at West Ham and Garnacho at Manchester United compare to one another.

As the table documents, when comparing Garnacho of the present day to Cole just before his move to Chelsea, the Englishman was more experienced, but the Argentine had produced a greater output in terms of goals and assists.

Cole arrived in the summer of 2003 as part of Roman Abramovich’s first spending spree, alongside Claude Makélélé, Hernán Crespo, Adrian Mutu, Juan Sebastián Verón, Scott Parker, Glen Johnson, Alexey Smertin, Geremi, Wayne Bridge, Damien Duff, and many, many others.

Well, 22 years on, Chelsea are adopting a similar approach in the transfer market, and all available evidence suggests that Garnacho could thrive in a similar way.

Retired players in uncapped category? IPL mulls retention rule change

Should a cricketer who is retired for five years be considered at par with an uncapped player at IPL auctions? The question came up during a meeting between the IPL and owners of the ten franchises on Wednesday, which was convened to discuss retention rules ahead of the 2025 auction. The question was brought up by the IPL while discussing the broader point related to uncapped players. As such, a rule that allowed exactly that – for players who had retired from international cricket for at least five years to be considered uncapped – was in place from 2008, the first season of the IPL. But it had never been put to use, and was scrapped in 2021. ESPNcricinfo has learned that when the suggestion was made on Wednesday, more than one franchise objected.Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) owner Kavya Maran is understood to have said that allowing a retired player to be retained as an uncapped player would be “disrespecting” the individual as well as their value, which could be much more at an auction. She said it would set a “wrong precedent” if an uncapped player were to be paid more than the former international (retained as an uncapped player). She suggested that the player in question be part of the auction, where the market would determine the price.Related

  • IPL franchises ask for two-year ban on overseas players pulling out after being bought at auction

  • Dhoni on his IPL future: 'Needs to be in the best interest of the team'

  • IPL owners' meet: DC want Impact Player scrapped; SRH recommend seven players to be retained

At least one other franchise rep also expressed their reservations, regardless of the number of years the player had been out of international cricket. On Thursday, ESPNcricinfo had erroneously reported that the suggestion had come not from the IPL but from CSK, who could then use the rule to retain MS Dhoni, who retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020. Ahead of the following mega auction, before IPL 2022, Dhoni was the second player after Ravindra Jadeja on CSK’s list of retentions, at the cost of INR 12 crore. An uncapped player retained that year cost the concerned team INR 4 crore. The question of whether Dhoni, 43, will continue to play IPL cricket – the only tournament he plays – or not has been doing the rounds the last few seasons. After undergoing knee surgery in 2023, he handed over the CSK captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the 2024 season and played a limited role with the bat, coming in late in the innings as a boundary-hitter. More recently, at an event, Dhoni said he and CSK would wait for the player retention rules to be finalised before taking a decision on his future as a player.

Retired India players might be able to lower base price

The franchises were, however, unanimous in agreeing that Indian players who had not played international cricket for five years should be allowed to lower their base prices at the auction. Currently, INR 50 lakh is the lowest base price set by the IPL for capped India players. The suggestion is understood to have come from the IPL chief operating officer Hemang Amin, whose view was that a lower base price would give such players a greater chance of getting bought at the auction.A franchise head said that capped Indians who had not played internationals for several years were being forced to enter the auction at higher base prices and were therefore often going unsold despite going under the hammer more than once.

"Deal agreed": Journalist says Liverpool have completed "statement signing"

Liverpool won hearts and minds with their Premier League title victory and could now be on the verge of ratifying one of the summer’s most exciting deals.

Liverpool make an instant impact in the summer window

The dust has started to settle on Liverpool claiming a second top-flight title of the modern era. Still, there have already been significant developments at Anfield in the early part of the summer window.

Jeremie Frimpong arrived to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold on Merseyside, and that only appears to be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to potential movement in both directions.

Florian Wirtz celebrates with Jeremie Frimpong

Finance expert Kieran Maguire has confirmed that Liverpool have £250 million to spend if they so wish without any threat of FFP involvement, which has paved the way for some exciting deals to occur over the next few months.

“Liverpool are in an excellent financial position. They didn’t spend very much in the 24-25 season, and they have the benefits of Champions League football next season. If they spent £250m, that would not be a problem.”

Liverpool transfer targets in pictures

Arne Slot made minimal changes last summer, but he has now identified Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon as a top target at Anfield, even if he will cost around £80 million to lure from the North East.

Why the summer transfer window will close for six days and re-open again

Premier League clubs have recently voted for the transfer window to open early this summer – here’s how it will work and why it’s happening.

By
Stephan Georgiou

Mar 27, 2025

Finding themselves in the perfect position to kick on, Liverpool will be aware that their rivals are also tooling up with some intriguing signings, setting the scene for a brilliant Premier League title fight next term.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the Reds are on the verge of completing a landmark deal ahead of the new campaign coming into focus.

Romano: Liverpool agree deal to sign Florian Wirtz

Taking to social media platform X, Romano revealed that Liverpool have now agreed a deal in principle to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and he will now head to England for his medical.

With personal terms and other formalities already agreed, it is understood that the Germany international will join for a fee of around £127 million, inclusive of add-ons.

Compared to Lionel Messi by Gerhard Struber, Wirtz registered 16 goals and 15 assists across 46 appearances in all competitions last term, and Reds journalist Paul Gorst said he will be a “statement signing”.

Florian Wirtz

Notably, he earns around £73,300 at Bayer Leverkusen, a figure that will be expected to increase exponentially once his switch to Anfield is officially confirmed.

Weeks of overwhelming speculation surrounding Wirtz have become the early story of the window. Nevertheless, he now appears set to link up with Slot in a deal that will reverberate around the world.
