Are Liverpool really a club in crisis?

It has been a tough start to life without Luis Suarez at Liverpool so far this season.

The Reds are currently 9th in the Premier League after 15 games with 21 points, and are struggling for consistency. They have won as many league games as they have lost but are only 6 points of a Champions League position. There is certainly plenty of time to turn things around.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has come under a heap of pressure, mainly from the media but also the fans too. Talk on social media about a potential ‘crisis’ seems a little premature, especially considering a win against Basel tonight puts them through to the knock-out stages of the Champions League.

Last season was a tremendous one for the club, exceeding quite a lot of people’s expectations. They missed out on the League title by just three points, which was perhaps down to the inexperience of the squad in coping with a title challenge.

It wasn’t just Luis Suarez that was an excellent performer; Raheem Sterling, Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerard were just a few among the fantastic showings. But with the Uruguayan gone, the fans need to remember a season like this is unlikely again for the next couple of years.

They played way above themselves for the majority of last season but that is not to say they can’t achieve top four this time round. What also can’t be forgotten is the turnaround from the previous season where they finished 7th. Memories are notoriously short in football but it’s hard not to feel that the amount of stick Rodgers has received is unwarranted and more than a little bit fickle.

But what is obvious is the fact the club haven’t recovered from the loss of Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan hitman scored a mammoth 31 league goals last season which in itself is extremely difficult to replace. Add to that Daniel Sturridge’s injury problems, which have seen him miss most of the season so far, and you’ve taken away both of Liverpool’s leading scorers from last season. The pair managed over 50 Premier League goals together last time out, so the fans need to bear in mind the task Rodgers has on his hands.

It has been a struggle finding suitable replacements upfront.

Mario Balotelli hasn’t looked up to the mark, failing to score a league goal up until this point and only scoring twice in 14 across all competitions. Rickie Lambert has come under unnecessary criticism but everyone has to remember he wasn’t brought in to replace Suarez or anything like that.

Lambert was signed as a back-up striker and has done a good job in the limited starts he has been given. The former Saints forward has scored twice in only 8 starts, and although he cannot be relied upon to score every week, Lambert is a good striker who offers a different option for the manager.

The striking conundrum could all be solved once Sturridge returns in the New Year, providing he hits the ground running again. But with over £100 million spent on players over the summer, it has to be said that the majority of the new signings have been fairly disappointing. One thing to consider however, is most of these signings are still young and should be given time to impress.

A top four finish this season isn’t out of the question if Liverpool can start becoming more consistent and the Champions League journey could well continue beyond tonight.

It is hard to see much of a crisis at the moment, and the fans and media need to be a bit more patient with Brendan Rodgers. The Liverpool manager was the right man to lead the club forward last season, and a disappointed start this time around shouldn’t be enough to change this.

Ginola talks up ‘transparency’ as he plots FIFA takeover

David Ginola has talked up his love for football and his plans to make the organisation more transparent as he plots to take over from FIFA president Sepp Blatter. The former Tottenham and Newcastle midfielder is set to launch a bid in conjunction with betting firm Paddy Power to take control of the governing body that runs football at the highest level. The campaign is set to be ‘fan backed’ in terms of finances and boasts the bold claim that it will ‘reboot football’ in an era in which Blatter’s control of the sporthas been roundly criticised amid allegations of corruption and out-dated views. With the backing of PP and the advertising around the bids some have suggested that Ginola is merely the face of a publicity stunt, but the 47-year-old confirmed he’s serious and outlined his aims to overhaul organisation should he be successful:“I think the most important thing is I do care about the game. That’s the most important thing.†He said at a press conference about his campaign.“I do believe that I can stand in front of you and say that I can be the next president because I want to share my ideas, my view on the game. I want a fair game.“Three things are very important: transparency, democracy, and equality. That’s the main thing I want to achieve.“The first thing is to get the first associations. That will be the task in the next few days.â€Ginola has until January 29 to prove to FIFA that he has played an active role in football through two of the last five years and that he has the support of five national football associations.Blatter remains the odd-on favourite to keep his post with Jerome Champagne and Ali Bin Al Hussein other candidates.

Chelsea’s Costa v Man City’s Aguero – Who is the better striker?

Both Chelsea’s Diego Costa and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero are 26-years-old, have scored 17 League goals eacg and are considered indispensable by their teams. With both fighting it out to fire their respective clubs to Premier League glory who is the better player?

Since arriving at Manchester City in 2011, Aguero has enjoyed great success and praise for his agility and strength. He won his first Premier League title ten months after joining the club and his 17 goals in the 2013/14 campaign helped City secure their second title in three years. With nine games left of the current season, Aguero’s City are still fighting to make the quarter-finals of the Champion’s League and are pushing Chelsea every step of the way for a consecutive League title.

In West London, Diego Costa is the man Blues fans are relying on to bring them their first Championship since 2010. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho felt his squad lacked enough attacking power in his first season back at Stamford Bridge so he brought Costa in from Atletico Madrid for £32million. The centre-forward had impressed after his 27 goals helped the ambitious Spanish club beat both Barcelona and Real Madrid to the La Liga title last term.

Now, while both have the same amount of League goals and can be described as being quick with a good work ethic, Costa is almost just as famous for his overly aggressive style. The Brazilian likes to play a very physical game, almost bullying the opposition who then worry about being drawn into fouls and giving away free-kicks.

His resilience is not typically a negative attribute to have, especially considering how physical the Premier League is, but now that he is known to have what is considered an ugly side to his game other players do try to provoke a reaction out of him in hopes that he’ll get sent off.

This season alone has seen Costa serve a three match ban for a stamp on Liverpool’s Emre Can, not to mention several controversial incidents during Chelsea’s Champion’s League exit to Paris Saint Germain, where many were shocked with his behaviour.

Meanwhile, Aguero continues to quietly work on racking up his goals and assists in both the League and in Europe. Aguero has found the net six times in in his last six outings in Europoe, while Costa will have to wait until next season to register his first Champions League goal for the Blues after they crashed out at the hands of PSG earlier this week.

Fortunately for Mourinho, despite the current English Champion’s sometimes struggling to maintain form, Chelsea have consistently sat top of the table and, at one point, were benefiting from an eight point gap between themselves and their nearest rivals. And although their tempo has slowed since Christmas, Chelsea won the Capital One Cup two weeks ago and are now six points ahead of second placed Man City with a game in hand.

Chelsea look odds on to take the title but, if they do slip up, then Aguero is just the man to punish them as he looks set to add to the 17 he’s already scored this season.

Both players are a huge asset to their respective teams, though Aguero’s Premier League and European accomplishments coupled with his level head give him the edge on Costa. Costa’s hot head will continue to get him into trouble, while Aguero will focus on the task at hand, supporting his team to win matches.

It is only once Costa leaves his childish ways behind him that he’ll fully get the respect his talent deserves and then it’ll be even harder to separate the two powerhouses.

The sad decline of Man City’s inspirational leader

As Manchester City’s season rapidly descends into a nightmare, the autopsies will begin from both the fans and the decision makers at The Etihad. This City squad has arguably been one of the greatest in their history but on recent evidence it is a squad that needs disbanding.

As the players in Blue attempt to salvage what they can from their wreckage of a campaign, almost every player is playing for their future. Including their once inspirational leader Vincent Kompany, what has happened to their Belgian stopper?

Questioning the 29 year old was once an admission of insanity, not only one of the best defenders in the Premier League, but on a par with any in world football. Purchased in 2008, before the impact of the Sheikh’s money would completely change the club, Kompany has been a constant in one of the club’s most successful periods. Twice he has lifted the main domestic prize, more than any other City player in history, but his influence is waning, where once he was infallible, he now is facing serious questions for the first time in his career in England.

In three of the last four campaigns, the Belgian has been inducted by his fellow pros into the team of the season, but votes this season will be scarce.

[ad_pod id=’ffc-video-small’ align=’left’]

Injuries have not been kind to the former Hamburg man, an over reliance on him has led to him being rushed back into the fold when in hindsight more rest was required. Manchester City’s lack of depth in defensive areas and the failing of signings such as Mangala has meant Pellegrini has consistently had to play the Belgian whatever his physical condition.

Never has this been more evident than in the derby defeat to United, his dangerous tackle on Daley Blind should have arguably seen the City skipper partaking in an early bath. But the lateness of the tackle on further inspection all seemed to stem from his troublesome thigh. The grimace on his face was clear to see and he would be unable to complete the match.

Whether it is the manager or the player himself, Kompany is not being used in a way to bring the best out of him. Whether his injuries will have a more lasting effect, is yet to be seen; will he lose the pace that made him such an impressive defender? United has not been the only example of Vincent diving into a tackle, when previously he would have had the confidence in himself to overcome the attacker with his speed.

Of course he has played a lot of football, being a vital member of City’s title winning side followed by his country’s World Cup campaign; he is in need of a proper break. This summer will allow that and hopefully for Kompany and his team the break will revitalise the rock of The Etihad.

Manchester City appear destined for a summer of upheaval and changes if they are to once again challenge Chelsea for the title. At this point their skipper is still central to their plans, his City career has earned a level of respect, but player, fans and club alike will be praying that we see the Kompany of the past, rather than the one we have seen this campaign.

Arsenal… This Champions League finalist is the perfect addition

Gone are the days of Arsene Wenger penny-pinching, with top stars boasting experience and know-how at the very highest level now arriving at Arsenal on a yearly basis. Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez have made the trip to North London over the course of the past two summers, and now all the talk suggests that Arturo Vidal will be the next big name to arrive.

Reports claim that the Juventus man – who is set to start for the Old Lady in Saturday’s Champions League Final – will switch to the Emirates Stadium after representing Chile at the Copa America, which has been greeted well among Gunners fans. It’s easy to see why, too… and here are FIVE reasons Vidal would be an excellent signing for Arsenal.

[interaction id=“none”]

A proven winner

With four Serie A titles to his name – all won back-to-back – and a Champions League Final victory standing between the 27-year-old and treble winner status, Vidal certainly has all the credentials to suggest that he’s a winner.

A winning mentality is vital at the top end of sport, and Arsenal have been labelled ‘soft’ when it comes to the big games in the past. But with players such as Sanchez – A La Liga champions – Ozil – a World Cup winner – and Vidal in the same XI, Arsenal would boast a core of players who’ve done it at the very highest level.

Tenacity

If there’s one thing Vidal brings to a team it’s tenacity. The 27-year-old is very much a box-to-box midfielder, who thrives when given the freedom to get up and down the pitch, putting out fires and breaking into the penalty area to help his attacking team-mates.

Such a style lends itself to the Premier League, with the English game a little more physical that some of Europe’s other divisions.

A real statement of intent

Over the last two summers Arsenal have signed Sanchez and Ozil… and on the back of these purchases – at a cost of over £30m and £40m respectively – two FA Cups have made their way to the Emirates Stadium. It seems then that a shift in approach has brought success, so statement signings are the way forward.

Vidal could be just that, too, with the midfielder a genuine world-class option and one of the most feared players in his position around. His addition would be a boost to the Gunners’ current crop of stars, further breeding a mentality of success.

Chilean link

With Sanchez also hailing from the South American country of Chile, Vidal’s potential adaptation could be a lot easier. There’s a lot to be said for a strong international contingent within a club, with groups of players able to help one another settle off the pitch – after all, footballers are actually human beings.

The arrival of Vidal could also benefit Alexis, who – as a key Gunners first-team player – is of the utmost importance.

Keep him from Liverpool or Man United

Perhaps not the best foundation to build a transfer on, but signing Vidal would keep him away from, potentially, rival teams. Both Liverpool and Manchester United have been aligned with the midfielder in recent times, so there’s every chance that if the Gunners pass on the Juventus man he could end up in other red shirts, which could come back to haunt Wenger!

Leaving Stamford Bridge is the only option for this Chelsea star

It was a season of superiority for Chelsea in the Premier League as they stormed to a fourth title success and first since 2010; ending the campaign eight points better off than their nearest rivals Manchester City.

While the defence played a massive part in this success; particularly in the second part of the season, the Blues attacking prowess also went along way to ensuring the trophy headed back to Stamford Bridge last month.

Diego Costa was pivotal to the team, spearheading the attack and leading the line brilliantly grabbing 20 league goals; an achievement that earned him a place in the PFA Team of the Year.

However ongoing injury problems to the former Atletico Madrid star have become an issue for the Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, and with preparations for next season already underway reports suggest a new striker could well be on their way to newly crowned champions.

Unable to rely on Costa, and with Didier Drogba leaving the club this summer; a lack of options in attack leaves the Blues with little choice but to bolster their front line.

But the impending arrival of a world class striker; perhaps Gonzalo Higuain who continues to be linked with a £30m switch to West London, could well spell the end of one man’s career at Chelsea with Loic Remy facing a big decision over his future.

[ffc-gal cat=”chelsea” no=”5″]

The Frenchman certainly proved to be a useful part of the squad when called upon, popping up with some crucial goals during the season. But the problem for the Frenchman in playing second fiddle to Costa was that these opportunities to impress were limited.

He will most probably remain below Costa in the pecking order, and should someone of Higuain’s calibre also join the Blues then it’s hard to see Remy’s time on the pitch increasing.

A striker of Remy’s quality needs to be playing week in week out and having proven himself at QPR, Newcastle and Chelsea; scoring goals on a regular basis, he has to consider a summer move to a side that can guarantee him this luxury.

Having made just seven league starts; six goals and nine in all competitions still marked a decent return and it’s no surprise to see plenty of clubs linked with a swoop for the 28-year-old.

The likes of Swansea City, Southampton and Crystal Palace are all believed to be interested in Remy, and for the benefit of his career he really should be looking to move on.

He may well be facing the prospect of playing for a team with less chance of winning trophies, but he can leave safe in the knowledge that he has a Premier League medal under his belt and has to have the attitude that regular first-team football is the priority at this stage in his career.

Southampton could certainly be an attractive option having secured European football next season and with even greater ambitions for the future they appear to be the perfect match.

But with next summer’s European Championships firmly on the horizon, his participation at the competition in his native France could rely on whether or not he leaves Chelsea, regardless of where he ends up.

He certainly has the ability to fire 15, 20 or even more goals given the chance next term; something that would give him the best platform to enjoy a successful summer at international level.

Remy could well decide he wants to stay at Chelsea and challenge for his place in the team; a result that would certainly please Mourinho having shown he is a great striker to be able to call upon.

But realistically he has to realise being the third choice centre forward means much of his season will be spent on the bench, and sadly leaving the Bridge is the only way he can ensure he gets the opportunity to flourish and continue scoring goals.

Clinical Premier League goalscorers aren’t always easy to find, ensuring it promises to be an interesting race for Remy’s signature over the coming weeks. And for those clubs involved it looks a great race to win.

The ten steps to Fantasy Football credibility…

While our social consciousness is flooded with self-absorbed selfies from Premier League stars on far-away beaches, I’m in front of a keyboard researching Bournemouth’s pre-season friendlies.

This is the time I lay the foundations for another season. Another campaign tussling with my Fantasy Football peers, in multiple games and leagues, with money and pride at stake.

Having turned Fantasy Football Scout from a casual hobby to a distraction that now occupies my every waking moment, I can’t really afford to relax. My “job” is to keep similarly hardened Fantasy Football managers informed, to do the leg-work so they don’t have to.

It’s a labour of love and it means I have to care about Bournemouth on a Wednesday night in Exeter.

This week is the biggest week of the year for me and other Fantasy Football managers.

Over the next five days we will select the players who will take us into the season, who will decide whether that first weekend is one of joy or frustration. Whether we can watch Match of the Day with a smug smile, or gritted teeth.

While I’m mulling over my own decision-making, I’ll be trying to help you out along the way.

For Fantasy Football fledglings, I’ve compiled the ten steps to success that will guide your initial foray into my world.

For more experienced campaigners, I’ve commissioned several articles over the week that will help answer some key questions I just know are keeping you awake at night.

Or maybe that’s just me.

Quite frankly, I don’t care. I’m too busy contemplating the merits of spending over five million on Troy Deeney…

Mark Sutherns is from Fantasy Football Scout the tips, news and views site for those who don’t just play Fantasy Football.

1. Know the scoring rules

Nobody likes to “read the manual” but if you fail to suss out the intricacies of the game, you’ll likely miss a trick. Do assists matter? Are there points for Man of the Match awards? Get to know the scoring rules and factor them in when scanning the player list.

2. Find the underpriced gems

Talking of which, you’ll need to reserve some time to soak this up. There’s bound to be some underpriced gems buried in the deep recesses of that long list of midfielders. Above all, look for players who are wrongly classified and potentially playing further forward. Strikers listed as a midfielders are often the key discoveries.

3. Don’t ignore the promoted sides

Take some time to check out the promoted sides. They might look like whipping boys but, in the early weeks, they can spring surprises and offer some great value. Set-pieces are often targeted by promoted sides as a source of goals – find their deadball specialists and make them a source of points.

4. Stick to proven talent

Try to avoid getting distracted by the razzmatazz surrounding expensive new arrivals. Drown out the fanfare and consider sticking to proven talent. For every Diego Costa that tears up defences from the get-go, there are ten Ricky van Wolfswinkels struggling to cope with the pace and expectation.

5. Use the fixture list wisely

Make the fixture list your friend. Treat it like revision notes – refer back to it and scan it at every opportunity for a chink of inspiration to guide your player selection. Players with kinder schedules are more likely to bring in the points, so look for patterns of easy and tough opponents and sort your transfers accordingly.

6. Keep an eye on injuries and team news

Stay up to speed with the injury and team news. You can actually make a long-term injury work for you if you can identify a cheap reserve player who is suddenly elevated to certain starter status. Similarly, if a player is out of favour, it may just allow a cheap Fantasy option into the starting XI and unearth a new bargain.

7. Be as flexible as possible

Try to set your team up to be as flexible as possible. In other words, try to distribute funds across the positions to allow you to react to form and injury with one or two transfers. If you go overboard on expensive players, you may find that you’re tasked with making major surgery in order to swoop for the must-own asset who emerges in the first few weeks.

8. Keep tabs on your rivals…

If you play in a mini-league, be sure to keep tabs on your rival Fantasy managers. Study their lineup and try to anticipate their transfers. If they open up a gap at the top, you may need to take a few risks and bring in some players that sets your squad apart – a “differential” or two.

9. Use mind games to your advantage

Mind games are not just for Mourinho to roll out on a Friday afternoon press conference – you can gain some advantage by attempting to get into the heads of your rivals. A quick Monday morning taunt at the water cooler could prompt them into reacting with a “knee jerk” transfer.

10. Watch a lot of football

Watch a lot of football. Your partner may not enjoy this crucial part of you strategy but needs must – this is “vital research”. Scouting matches will give you a vital view on form and guide your future transfers.

Revealed: 90% of West Ham fans want Hernandez to start vs Arsenal

We’re not even halfway through the season just yet, but Javier Hernandez has already become something of a forgotten man at the London Stadium. The former Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester United striker was arguably West Ham’s most promising summer signing, but he’s not made a start for the east London club since the very start of November.

There’s little disputing Chicharito’s talents, however, so tonight’s League Cup clash with Arsenal could be the perfect time to bring him back into the fold – a chance for the Mexico international to remind everybody of what he can do against top-quality opposition.

With that in mind, we asked West Ham fans earlier today whether the striker, who Transfermarkt value at £16.2million, should be part of the Irons’ starting XI this evening and according to our poll, a whopping 90% of those who voted think he should.

How would you line up David Moyes’ side tonight, Irons fans? Let us know by commenting below…

In Focus: Man United target Seri wouldn’t be the typical Mourinho signing

According to reports in The Mirror, Manchester United are leading a four-way chase to bring £35m-rated Nice midfielder Jean Michael Seri, who is seen as long-term replacement for Michael Carrick by Jose Mourinho, to the Premier League this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Mirror says that United are in pole position ahead of Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City to land the Ivory Coast international at the end of the season.

The Mirror reports that the 26-year-old has a release clause set at €40m (£35.3m) in his contract, which is due to run out in the summer of 2019, and there is set to be a big scramble for his signature in the summer.

The report adds that sources close to the player says that he would prefer a move to England, which would rule out interest from the likes of Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

How has Seri done this season?

He certainly hasn’t been as effective as he was during the previous campaign – his success saw him come close to joining Barcelona last summer – but he has still impressed.

The 26-year-old has scored one goal and provided a further five assists in 25 appearances in all competitions – compared to last term when he netted seven times and picked up 10 assists in 39 outings in total – although he has been playing in a more defensive role in the middle of the park.

According to WhoScored.com, his main strengths are his passing and ability to make key passes, and he has an overall passing accuracy of 91% in 18 appearances in Ligue 1 and the Europa League for Nice this season.

He has also made 41 key passes, which is an impressive total given he has primarily been playing as a defensive midfielder – he managed 80 in 38 games last term.

Would he be a good signing for United?

He certainly would be.

If Mourinho is looking for a long-term successor to Michael Carrick than Seri has shown that he can be the answer with his ability on the ball and to play as a defensive midfielder, but he also has the ability to play further forward too.

The 26-year-old is probably more suited to the box-to-box role in reality though – he would be most effective alongside Nemanja Matic – and it remains to be seen whether Mourinho would be happy to have a player that stands at 5ft 6in tall playing in a defensive role given the Portuguese manager’s usual preference of tall and strong players.

Liverpool fans urge club to sign Ryan Sessegnon after latest Fulham display

Fulham starlet Ryan Sessegnon’s brilliant season continued as he scored a brace in his team’s 3-1 win against Barnsley at Oakwell on Saturday, and Liverpool fans have urged their club to buy the talented 17-year-old.

The versatile left-sided player, who could cost £50m according to The Times, has already made 62 first-team appearances for the Championship outfit despite his tender years, and his two goals against the Tykes were his 10th and 11th of the season in just 29 league games.

The England U19 international has already been heavily linked with the Reds’ Premier League rivals Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, which is no surprise given the level of performances he has been giving and the huge potential that he has.

Liverpool supporters were quick to have their say on his latest display via social media, and while one said he is the “new Gareth Bale”, another said “sign this Ryan Sessegnon up”.
