Spurs could land lethal Son partner in swoop for "unplayable" £61m wizard

Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed a terrific start to the 2023/24 campaign and the arrival of James Maddison played a huge role in that as he hit the ground running in London.

The England international was signed from recently relegated Leicester City for a reported fee of £40m as Ange Postecoglou took advantage of their demotion to the Championship.

Maddison did not need any time to settle into life at Spurs as the terrific attacking midfielder registered two assists on his Premier League debut for the club against Brentford on the opening day.

destiny-udogie-james-maddison-tottenham-opinion

He has started 11 top-flight matches for Tottenham so far this season and contributed with three goals, five assists, and six 'big chances' created, along with 2.9 key passes per game.

However, the former Foxes star suffered an injury to his ankle against Chelsea earlier this month and is now set to be out of action until January.

Whilst Postecoglou is set to be boosted by his return at the start of 2024, the Australian head coach could also look to bring in a player who could have a similar impact at the top end of the pitch by signing reported transfer target Raphinha.

Spurs transfer news – Raphinha

According to a report from FootballTransfers earlier this month, Tottenham have a 'concrete' interest in the Barcelona attacker ahead of the January transfer window.

The outlet also claimed that the Spanish side are prepared to cash in on him for a fee within the region of €70m (£61m) and that they are looking for cash to ease their financial problems.

Barcelona are said to hold an interest in Cristian Romero but a swap deal may not be on the cards due to their need for money to come in, rather than a player-plus-cash arrangement.

raphinha-transfer-gossip-barcelona-arsenal-arteta-edu-alexis-sanchez

The report also stated that Spurs have been put off by Brentford's valuation of England international Ivan Toney in the club's search for a natural number nine to lead the line following Harry Kane's move to Bayern Munich over the summer.

However, FootballTransfer claimed that Postecoglou believes that Heung-min Son has the ability to continue in the centre-forward position until the end of the season, at least, and this means that there is no rush for them to bring in a striker during the January transfer window.

Instead, they could swoop to sign Raphinha from Barcelona to improve their wide options and land a player who could play alongside the South Korea international in attack.

The Brazilian ace is a superb creator from a right wing position and he could be a lethal partner for Son at the top end of the pitch during the second half of the campaign, which is why Spurs should push to seal his signature at the start of next year.

Son's season in numbers

Tottenham's captain has enjoyed a sublime start to the 2023/24 campaign and has been given the freedom of the middle of the field since Kane's departure.

Instead of playing out wide or alongside the England skipper, the £190k-per-week sensation has thrived as the main man in the final third for Spurs.

Son has racked up eight goals and one assist in 12 Premier League matches since Postecoglou's arrival, which shows that the experienced forward has been a reliable scorer for the head coach so far.

florian-wirtz-heung-min-son-liverpool-opinion

In fact, the 31-year-old ace has only missed one 'big chance' and scored eight times from an xG (Expected Goals) of 4.61. This shows that he has been incredibly clinical in front of goal and has made the most of the opportunities that have come his way.

He ranks within the top 18% of Premier League forwards for non-penalty goals (0.74) per 90 this season, despite only ranking within the top 46% for non-penalty xG (0.42) per 90.

Whereas, Son managed ten goals from 10.08 xG and missed nine 'big chances' in 36 top-flight appearances for Tottenham throughout the 2022/23 campaign.

These statistics suggest that the South Korean dynamo has improved his form in front of goal this term as he is on course to smash last season's goal tally and is currently outperforming his xG considerably, whereas he was on par with it before Postecoglou's arrival.

His impressive finishing suggests that the former Bayer Leverkusen star could thrive alongside another player who can create big chances for him on a regular basis, which is what Raphinha could do based on his performances for both Barcelona and Leeds in recent years.

The statistics that show why Raphinha could thrive with Son

The left-footed wizard, who predominantly plays on the right side of the attack, joined the Catalan giants from Leeds at the start of last season.

Since his move to Spain, Raphinha has racked up nine goals, eight assists, and 19 'big chances' created in 28 starts in LaLiga for Xavi's side.

He has been rewarded with eight assists from 10.49 xA (Expected Assists) and this suggests that his teammates have let him down at times by not making the most of his creativity.

Barcelona winger Raphinha.

His fellow attackers at Leeds also failed to make the most of the chances that he was able to create at Premier League level. The 26-year-old sensation has already proven himself in English football, as his statistics with the Whites showcase what he can do in this country.

Raphinha produced 22 'big chances' for his teammates in 60 Premier League starts and was only rewarded with 12 assists to his name, to go along with 17 goals of his own.

The former Rennes prospect, who was once hailed as "unplayable" by AllLeedsTV presenter Oscar Marrio, has displayed his ability to create 'big chances' at an impressive rate over the course of the last three-and-a-half-seasons, as shown by the aforementioned statistics, and has proven himself in England and in Spain.

Raphinha's statistics over the last 365 days.

In fact, Raphinha ranks within the top 3% of his positional peers across the Men's Big Five League and European competitions over the last 365 days for xAG (Expected Assisted Goals) per 90 with 0.40.

This suggests that the 26-year-old maestro is one of the most creative players in his position in the major European leagues, which is why he could thrive alongside Son.

The Spurs skipper, who has shown off his finishing skills this season, could benefit from Raphinha's ability to provide his teammates with 'big chances' and high xG opportunities on a regular basis, and they could combine to make a lethal pairing for Spurs in the final third.

"Terrific" – Ally McCoist thinks Spurs could make an "interesting signing"

TalkSPORT pundit and former Rangers manager Ally McCoist thinks Tottenham could make an "interesting signing" in January after what he's heard.

Spurs approach crucial January window

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou will be growing very frustrated over his side's growing absentee list behind-the-scenes, with ten players now unavailable to play through suspension or injury.

Cristian Romero is ineligible, still serving his respective ban, while Postecoglou's crop of sidelined stars is growing by the week. James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Richarlison, Ryan Sessegnon, Manor Solomon, Ashley Phillips, Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur are all currently on the treatment table. The latter, who had only just returned from nine months out, is expected to be back out until February after an ankle ligament injury.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs supporters will be ruing the reckless challenge from Aston Villa defender Matty Cash on Bentancur, with the Uruguayan's latest injury now adding to Postecoglou's growing list of problems.

Even before Bentancur's ankle problem, reports suggested Spurs were set to take to the January transfer market in an effort to solve Postecoglou's glaring lack of squad depth. Lead by new sporting director Johan Lange, the priorities for Tottenham are a new defender and winger, according to recent rumours.

Tottenham chasing Jota

Indeed, one of the most heavily-linked players of late has been former Celtic winger Jota. The Portuguese attacker could leave Saudi Arabia, where he now plays for Al-Ittihad, as Spurs eye a winter window move. According to The Times, Postecoglou is even personally keen on signing Jota.

This is after injuries to both Manor Solomon and Ivan Perisic, with Jota seen as someone who can come in and provide much-needed cover on the wings.

McCoist thinks Spurs will make "interesting" Jota move

Having starred under the Australian at Celtic, it will be intriguing to see if the 24-year-old could to do it in the Premier League. Speaking to talkSPORT this week (via TBR), former Gers boss turned pundit McCoist said he thinks Jota would be an "interesting" Spurs signing.

“Good player. Listen, I thought he was a terrific player, a real talent," said the Scotsman. “I’m not sure actually Celtic have replaced him, to be honest with you, but he’s obviously had his problems, he wasn’t in the team at all out there was he, he’s not been playing?

When asked if he is good enough to make the cut in England, McCoist replied: “Yes, and he looks like a Spurs player as well. He takes people on, he’s quite easy on the eye, he’ll score his fair share of goals. I think he’d be an interesting signing.”

The winger scored 11 goals and assisted 11 others in his final season at Celtic, which come as very impressive numbers. Jota has also been called an "exciting" player by former Spurs right-back Alan Hutton.

“Jota's that player fans want to see. He's exciting, he takes people on, he makes things happen, he scores goals and ticks all the boxes," said the pundit to Football Insider when commenting on his form in 2022.

The massive cost of Man Utd missing out on Champions League football next season

Erik ten Hag's side face a daunting task to try and get back into Europe's elite competition and failure to do so will leave them in a financial mess

Thirteen years ago in early April, Manchester United went to Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea in a Champions League quarter-final tie. On Thursday they head there knowing that victory is essential if they want to retain any hope of qualifying for the competition next season.

These two giants were regulars in the latter stages of the Champions League but have dramatically fallen out of the continental conversation, with Chelsea missing out on all three European competitions this season and United failing spectacularly in their voyage, finishing bottom of their UCL group.

Chelsea are effectively doomed to miss out on European football again completely as they sit 12th in the Premier League but the Red Devils still have a glimmer of hope of making it back into the big time, despite their dismal 1-1 draw at Brentford last time out.

Due to the expansion of the Champions League from next season, a fifth-placed finish could be enough for United to qualify. They currently trail Tottenham in fifth by nine points but can cut that gap to six with victory at Stamford Bridge. Given Spurs' reputation as apparent 'bottlers', United could still catch them and sneak into the Champions League by the back door.

But if this doesn't happen, how big of a mess would the club be in? What will be the true cost if Erik ten Hag's side miss out on the Champions League?

  • Getty Images

No access to a €2.5 billion prize pot

By qualifying for this season's Champions League, United were one of the 32 teams who were given a proportion of €2.1 billion (£1.8bn/$2.3bn) UEFA distributed to clubs participating in the competition.

That prize pot is increasing to approximately €2.5bn (£2.1/$2.7bn) from next season due to the expansion of the competition, which was agreed to stave off the threat of the European Super League. From next campaign 36 teams will compete and an extra 64 games will be played.

The exact amount individual clubs earn under the current format is dictated by their performance in the competition, the size of their country's television market and their 10-year coefficient, calculated according to historic performances.

Last season's winners Manchester City earned €134.9m in prize money (£115m/$145m) while Real Madrid, who were knocked out by Pep Guardiola's side in the semi-finals, earned the second highest amount, €118.8m (£101m/$149m), more than finalists Inter.

    Colossal contrast to Europa League

Sevilla, meanwhile, earned just €21.8million (£19m/$23m) from winning the Europa League. Thirty teams made more money than Sevilla last season simply by being in the Champions League.

And this season, despite their miserable and brief return to the Champions League, United still stand to make up to €60m (£51m/$64m) from UEFA, nearly double the €32.6m (£27m/$35m) they received for reaching the quarter-finals of last season's Europa League, playing 12 matches in the process.

Under the new format, teams are guaranteed €18.6m (£15m/$20m) just for qualifying, a €3m (£2.5m/$3.2m) increase from this season. Teams in the Europa League will only be guaranteed €4.1m (£3.5m/$4.4m) in the Europa League.

There is also a big difference in money distributed for winning matches. In the Champions League, each group stage victory is worth €2.1m (£1.8m/$2.2m) and there will be eight matches under the Swiss Model, which puts all 36 teams into one league, with four home games and four away games. If you qualify for the knockout phase, either through finishing in the top eight or through the play-off round, you earn €11m (£9.4m/$11.8m).

In the Europa League, a victory is only worth €450,000 (£385k/$485k), while qualification is rewarded with only €1.75m (£1.5m/$1.8m). So, if United were to qualify for the Champions League and win all eight games, they would earn a total of €46.4m (£40m/$50m) in prize money. The equivalent performance in the Europa League would earn them a total of €9.45m (£8m/$11m). So that's a potential difference of €36.95m (£31m/$39m).

  • Getty Images

    Lower matchday revenue

It doesn't take a genius to work out that Champions League games are far more attractive to fans than Europa League matches and so missing out on the elite competition means reduced ticket receipts and lower television revenue.

In their last set of accounts, United reported that they had increased broadcast revenue by £52m ($65m) between July and December 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. They also increased matchday revenue by £23.8m ($29m). Both spikes can be put down to their return to the Champions League.

The fact that there is an extra home game in next season's format and a potential play-off round if United were to finish between ninth and 24th in the table means they stand to lose out even more by failing to reach European football's premier club competition.

    Pay cuts for players

United's accounts will get at least get some respite if they fail to qualify for the Champions League with the players set to eat a 25 percent pay cut. That was the case the last time United failed to reach Europe's top competition so the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw will be bracing themselves for a second pay cut in three years.

Top earner Casemiro will see his weekly wage drop from £350,000 to £262,500 while Rashford will have his earnings fall from an estimated £300,000 to £225,000. Captain Bruno Fernandes' weekly wages will be slashed to £180,000.

Of course, the players will not be struggling to make their mortgage payments, but some may be tempted to move away in a bid to recoup their previous salary, especially if they think that United might not immediately get back into the Champions League the following year.

Paris Saint-Germain's interest in Rashford is no secret and they would be able to practically guarantee him Champions League football every year.

Four shy of a 100 limited-overs internationals, New Zealand and Otago Sparks left-arm spinner Morna Nielsen has announced her retirement from all forms of cricket. Having last played both formats in November 2016, the 28-year old has shifted all of her focus into her day job as a structural engineer.”Looking back on my career, it was awesome to have the opportunity to play at so many different places both domestically and internationally.” Nielsen, who also turned out for Melbourne Stars in the Women’s Big Bash and Southern Vipers in the Kia Super League, said, “And to do so with people who are now lifelong friends.”It was also an interesting time to be involved with the changing landscape of the women’s game. It opened up opportunities I never thought possible such as the Women’s Big Bash in Australia and Super League in England.”In a domestic career spanning nearly 11 years, Nielsen started out as a left-arm quick bowler with Northern Districts in 2007 before switching allegiance to Otago. On the international circuit, she climbed to the No. 1 spot on the ICC T20I rankings for bowlers in 2014, and claimed remarkable figures of 4-0-4-0 in the 2016 World T20 against Australia. Overall, Nielsen picked up 53 wickets from 52 ODIs and 41 wickets from 44 T20Is.”Morna was extremely hard working and always willing to adapt and change as the game did. She can be proud of her career with the White Ferns and we wish her every success in life after cricket,” New Zealand head coach Haidee Tiffen said.As post-retirement plans go, Nielsen has it all mapped out. “A big thanks must go to my work – BCD Group. They have been so supportive of my cricketing endeavours and now it’s time to get stuck into actually doing some work!”I’ll still be keeping a keen eye on the Sparks in their domestic competitions. There’s an enormous amount of talent in the squad and they are a great bunch of girls.”

England's usual suspects Harry Kane & Jude Bellingham joined by shock names in form-based Three Lions starting line-up

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Gareth Southgate named his 23-man squad to take on Brazil and Belgium in March friendlies last week in what will be the final England camp before this summer's European Championship. One thing the Three Lions boss has often been criticised for is not picking his teams based on form, but with WhoScored's latest offering (via ) that possibility has been removed. Usual suspects Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham feature, as they are joined by a surprise Everton duo at the back.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kane and Bellingham's selections are no surprises, given that they have both been among the standout performers across Europe this season following their respective transfers to Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. As a result, they both record the highest WhoScored ratings, with City and Arsenal wingers Foden and Saka shortly behind.

At the back, an all-Everton centre-half partnership keeps the typical combination of Harry Maguire and John Stones out, with Tarkowski not even making Southgate's most recent 23-man list. Branthwaite was called up, however, having enjoyed a stellar campaign under Sean Dyche this term. He will surely be hoping for a call-up to the tournament in Germany ahead of a potentially very active summer transfer window.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, WhoScored's list makes no mention of Jordan Henderson, whose selection by Southgate last week astounded most England fans given his nightmare season for Al-Ettifaq and now Ajax. The last-minute decision to call up Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo offset some of that concern, as he looks to make his senior Three Lions debut in the upcoming friendlies.

"Embarrassing" Behind-The-Scenes Error Occurs At Liverpool

Liverpool may be impressing on the pitch at the moment, but an "embarrassing" incident has occurred away from the pitch, according to a fresh update.

What's the latest news at Liverpool?

Going into the new Premier League season, Jurgen Klopp's side felt like something of an unknown entity, having disappointed so much last time around, finishing fifth after originally being seen as title challengers.

Huge changes have happened within Liverpool's squad since the end of 2022/23, with Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch all added to the midfield, with the likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson moving on, as well as several others.

It has been a strong opening to the campaign for the Reds, however, who have won three and drawn one of their first four fixtures, having already made trips to Chelsea and Newcastle United.

Later this month, Liverpool will also get their Europa League campaign underway, and while they would much rather be plying their trade in the Champions League this season, it is still a good chance of sealing yet more silverware under Klopp – a Dublin final next year makes it even more inviting.

One of the sides who the Reds will come up against in their group is Austrian outfit LASK, who may not be a world-renowned team, but still have the potential to cause them problems if they are not fully switched on. Unfortunately, a new update suggests that a big error from Liverpool could hurt relations between the two club before they meet on September 21st.

What off-field error have Liverpool made?

According to Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung [via Sport Witness], the Reds have been made to look "weak and embarrassing" because of numerous mistakes made on the club's official website when it came to providing a report on LASK, including saying they were in the last 16 of the UEFA Europa Conference League last season, when in fact it was the year before.

It is claimed that "false information" was posted regarding them – including the "nonsense of listing former players who never actually played for them – which is seen as unforgivable given the "huge PR and media department" that Liverpool have. It is even angrily stated that LASK will beat Klopp's side in both group stage meetings in the Europa League should they show a similar level of incompetence on the pitch.

This is not a good look for Liverpool, who have largely been seen as such a well-run club since Klopp arrived at Anfield in October 2015, with everyone pulling the same direction and doing their jobs impressively.

LASK have every right to feel disrespected by the Reds, at a time when they will be looking forward to coming up against one of world football's most famous names, and while mistakes are only human, to have the official club website make such an amateur error is not a good look for the club at all.

The hope is that apologies have been made to the right people and that the relationship is not damaged too much before the two sides meet later this month, but this isn't an incident that anyone of a Liverpool persuasion will feel particularly proud of.

Everton: Toffees prodigy has seen his value soar to £53m after leaving

Everton boast something of a knack for developing English football's finest talents, welcoming exciting youngsters onto the scene season after season.

The Premier League club's senior set-up has not quite matched the prosperity of its youth cluster across recent years, with Everton spending the past two campaigns battling against relegation and now poised for further travails moored in the lower echelon of the division after picking up just one point from five matches so far this term.

Sean Dyche certainly has his work cut out for him, with the Toffees finishing the 2022/23 campaign as the division's second-lowest scorers and blanking across each defeat since the summer.

Everton manager Sean Dyche.

The bright spark on the blue half of Merseyside comes in the form of Jarrad Branthwaite, who has returned to his parent club after excelling out on loan in the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven last year.

The 21-year-old has been praised for his "absolutely fantastic" displays in Everton's defence by some in the media, and looks to be one of the brightest stars to have emerged at Goodison Park over recent years, having already attracted attention from the likes of Manchester United this year.

While not actually an Everton academy graduate, the Merseyside outfit did foster the rise of one John Stones, who is now considered one of the very best players in world football.

Why did Everton sell John Stones?

In 2013, Everton signed England U19 defender Stones from Barnsley for a fee in the region of £3m; he was 18-years-old, but already viewed as one of the country's most promising up-and-comers.

The 67-cap England international played 95 times for the Toffees across three campaigns before his precocious talents earned him a £47.5m transfer to Manchester City in 2016, where he remains, and thrives, to this day.

john-stones-everton-transfer-manchester-city

Having been sold by Ronald Koeman, Stones' departure left a gaping hole in the Blues' central defence, with 31-year-old veteran Ashley Williams swiftly joining as the replacement in an £11m move from Swansea City.

Williams was a solid defender who has performed well for many years for his Welsh outfit, but he did not find his feet at all with Everton and indeed languished for the club, earning £70k-per-week across two seasons but receiving criticism from journalist Ben Marlow, who said: "Thought he would be great for us but turned out to be a total liability. Awful defender."

This typified the woeful dealings of Everton owner Farhad Moshiri and co, with the money recuperated from Stones' sale not being efficiently injected back into the club, with the fans paying the price for the ineptitude to this day.

How much is John Stones worth now?

According to CIES Football Observatory, Stones is now valued at around £53m, which seems pretty appropriate for a first-class 29-year-old defender with three years left on his current deal.

This also means that Everton cashed in for a pretty decent amount, all things considered, for a player with bundles of talent but yearning for a future away from Goodison Park.

However, his incredible talents would have been perfect for an Everton side that has slid further and further into obscurity over the past few years, now teetering on the cusp of relegation from the Premier League for the very first time.

What are John Stones' best qualities?

Stones wasn't always in the limelight under Pep Guardiola's mastermind management, and actually spent more matches as an unused substitute across the 2021/22 Premier League season (13) than he did in the starting line-up (12).

Having been of a vested interest to West Ham United back in 2020, Stones has made the increments to his game and is now considered a ”world-class” player by the likes of YouTube Content Creator Steve McInerney.

john-stones-chelsea-transfer-gossip-everton-manchester-city-amadou-onana

Teammate Kyle Walker always knew of his prowess, saying back in 2017: "John is an unbelievable player. You don't quite appreciate him until you are playing alongside him. He rarely gets beat, he is great on the ball and he is very calm and level-headed."

Now one of the most dynamic players in the world, Stones' all-encompassing skill set has prompted Guardiola to field him in an array of roles, namely central defence, right-back and as a centre-back last term.

As per FBref, the £250k-per-week machine ranks among the top 10% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 8% for pass completion, the top 11% for progressive passes, the top 8% for progressive carries and the top 9% for successful take-ons per 90.

This level of dynamism in his craft is a rarity indeed, a transcendent player of immense proportions, lauded as "sensational" by pundit Jamie Carragher for his display in last season's FA Cup final against Manchester United, integral in aiding the Citizens secure a historic treble.

Stones' blistering success over the past few years has now situated him among the creme-de-la-creme in the game, with some even arguing that he is "the best" defender that the Premier League has to offer.

While his £47.5m price tag seemed rather exorbitant at the time, Stones has proved his worth with his multi-functional role under Guardiola's wing and his expansive skills and supreme technical ability, very much the prodigious talent those at Everton knew he was.

Selling him was a good financial deal for the Goodison Park side, but a crucial moment in the side's slump over the years, which still persists to this day.

There are surely many of an Everton persuasion who must rue the day his departure was granted; just imagine the impact he could have had if he'd been kept at the club and developed into the world-beating phenom that he now is.

Dhananjaya, Mendis lead strong Sri Lanka reply

After Sri Lanka lost a wicket before they had even scored a run, Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Silva wiped 187 runs off Bangladesh’s 513

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando01-Feb-2018Stumps Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva run between the wickets•Associated PressMahmudullah’s 83 not out heaved Bangladesh to 513, before the two big hopes of Sri Lanka’s top order – Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis – wiped 187 runs off the deficit together, and remained unbeaten at the close of play.Though the spinners had a little more purchase, this was, in short, another batting day in Chittagong. By mounting such a monumental score, however, Bangladesh have given themselves a cushion – Sri Lanka must bat well again on Friday to come to a position of parity.De Silva, rarely rattled, was calm and assertive from the outset, driving impeccably, and never shy to flit around the crease in the course of manufacturing of a dab or a lap sweep against the spinners. There is growing sentiment that he is one of Sri Lanka’s most versatile Test batsmen, and this innings was further evidence. No portion of the field was unfruitful for Dananjaya, and bowler could trouble him for long. If a few dot balls mounted, he would slink down the pitch to loft the spinner over the offside, or back away to punch him square of the pitch. Where many batsmen fear losing their wickets just before a break, Dananjaya saw opportunity; thrice he ran at Taijul Islam in the over before tea, and thrice he hoisted him over the infield for boundaries. In between the big blows, singles and twos, eased comfortably through the field – no fuss, just confident Test batting. The only half-chance off de Silva’s bat came when he was on 65, and Mustafizur Rahman drew an edge with a ball that straightened. The chance flew low between first and second slip, neither fielder getting close to the ball. A few overs later, Taijul Islam hit him on the pad after he had skipped down the track, and Bangladesh burned one of their reviews, now quite desperate to dislodge him. As he had been struck more than three metres from the stumps, the ball tracking did not even come into play. Six overs later, after a minor deceleration during the nineties, Dananjaya struck a sublime backfoot punch off Taijul to complete a 122-ball century. It was his second triple-figure score in as many innings: the excellent match-saving hundred at Delhi being his most recent effort.Mendis’ innings, was not nearly as convincing. He had been beaten repeatedly by Sunzamul Islam in the early overs, and was often uncomfortable against each of Bangladesh’s three left-arm spinners, right until the final over of the day. He could have been caught in the slips twice. He was dropped by a diving Mehidy on four, off the bowling of Mustafizur, and later, Mehidy had a similarly difficult chance go down of his own bowling. Batting on 57, Mendis edged a straighter delivery, that just evaded he keeper’s gloves, but was too fine for slip to lay a hand on it. There was an lbw review against him also, but as the ball was passing over the stumps, the original decision prevailed. In between the tetchy moments, were flashes of Mendis skill – the rocket-powered flat sweeps, and the rapid pull shots whenever the bowlers dropped short. All six of Mendis’ intentional boundaries came on the legside, as did a majority of his singles. This being his comeback Test innings after being dropped for the tour of India, Mendis stuck largely to his stronger scoring areas. The two had come together after Dimuth Karunaratne fell in the third over, edging Mehidy to slip.Earlier on day two, Mahmudullah had been the spine in a good lower-order batting effort from Bangladesh. Though they had lost two quick wickets inside the first seven overs – including that of overnight centurion Mominul Haque – Mahmudullah had combined with Sunzamul Islam to ensure Bangladesh remained on track for a score of over 500. The two put on 58 for the eighth wicket, before Sunzamul was stumped down the legside, having failed to read a Lakshan Sandakan googly. Mahmudhullah trusted his tail-end partners. Only when No. 11 Mustafizur came to the crease did he kick his own innings into a higher tempo, and even then, did not turn down singles.Suranga Lakmal dismissed Mustafizur with a short ball to finish with the innings’ best figures of 3 for 58. The spinners’ returned far less flattering numbers. Dilruwan Perera and Herath both conceded well over a hundred runs, and Lakshan Sandakan had 2 for 92.
